Anthony Philip Heinrich was theforemost American composer of his day. His music ~ effusively http://pw1.netcom.com/~kallisti/Heinrich.html
Extractions: Anthony Philip Heinrich was the foremost American composer of his day. His music ~ effusively Romantic, wildly imaginative, spectacularly orchestrated, and technically demanding ~ was beyond the reach of most of his contemporaries, and only at the end of his long life did he receive an adequate performance (in Prague) of some of his orchestral works. Interest in and appreciation of Heinrich has been growing steadily in recent decades, and the time is ripe to finally bring his music to the public. Kallisti Music Press is proud to undertake the publication of Heinrich's complete works, so that at long last his "strange ideal somersets and capriccios" can receive the hearing they so richly deserve. Born in Bohemia, Heinrich inherited a business empire that enabled him to indulge a love of travel, and gave him the leisure to become a highly skilled amateur violinist and pianist. Stranded in the U.S. by the collapse of his fortune in the Napoleonic Wars, he resolved to fall back on his avocation and become a professional musician. But when his new wife died, and the conducting job he had sought was downsized, he fled as far as he could toward a wilderness oblivion, coming to rest in an abandoned slave cabin in Kentucky. There, at the age of 37, at the very edge of Western civilization, he began to compose. When The Dawning of Music in Kentucky was published, Heinrich was invited to Boston and spent the rest of his career there and in New York, composing vast amounts of music and becoming a father figure to America's small classical-music community. In the end, he outlived all his musical contemporaries, composing orchestral memorials to Beethoven and Mendelssohn and achieving the greatest age of any composer in several generations.

Extras History Heinrich was the first fully professional American composer, and the first to establish a European reputation. He was an arch-Romantic whose Berliozian orchestration and idealistic instrumental demands kept his 38 orchestral scores from being heard except on rare festival programs during his lifetime, though these occasions were always greeted (both here and in Europe) with great interest and enthusiasm. "The War of the Elements" is explicitly programatic only in its coda, a tone-painting of Niagara Falls in which continuous flurries of 16th-notes in the violins and woodwinds (led by reinforced flute and piccolo lines) are punctuated by reeling syncopations from the brass and 6 independent percussion lines, culminating in an fff soli for timpani and bass drum just before the final chords.

Comments on Heinrich The following comments, on Anthony Philip Heinrich , are by John Hill Hewitt from his book Shadows on the Wall or, Glimpses of the Past , (Baltimore: Turnbull Brothers, 1877) pages 82-85: Father Heinrich polite gratified . The composer labored hard to give full effect to his weird production; his bald plate bobbed from side to side, and shone like a bubble on the surface of a calm lake. At times his shoulders would be raised to the line of his ears, and his knees went up to the key-board, while the persperation rolled in large drops down his wrinkled cheeks. The ladies stared at the maniac musician, as they, doubtless, thought him, and the President scratched his head, as if wondering, whether wicked spirits were not rioting in the cavern of mysterious sounds and re- belling against the laws of acoustics. The composer labored on, occasionally explaining some incomprehen- sible passage, representing, as he said, the breaking up of the frozen river Niagara, the thaw of the ice, and the dash of the mass over the mighty falls.

(Anthony Philip) Heinrich The Tower of Babel, or The Languages Confounded, a Grand Oratorical Divertissement Heinrich (1781-1861) wrote three orchestral versions of the Tower of Babel, creating a musical depiction of the tower's construction and a huge canon that describes the confounding of language. Heinrich was born a wealthy businessman in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) but became a musician after losing his fortune; he spent the remainder of his life living all over Europe and the United States (Philadelphia, Kentucky, Boston, New York, London, Prague, etc.) He was well known during his lifetime but faded into obscurity after his death, but there has been something of a revival of interest in him in the last 30 years. 1st Tower of Babel:
