Extractions: Alan Hovhaness was born 8 March 1911 in Somerville, Massachusetts. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston with Frederic Converse and in Japan with Massataro Togi. Hovhaness has received numerous commissions from all over the world and a number of awards and honors, including 2 Guggenheim fellowships, Fulbright (India) and Rockefeller (Japan). Presently he is composing in Seattle, Washington. Alan Hovhaness is internationally known as one of this century's most prolific composers and one who has developed a style which is unique, based not only on Occidental influences but also on those of Armenia and the Far East. "Composer,publisher and performer unite in beautiful cooperation for altruism of a better civilization. The composer, as in old China, joins heaven and earth with threads of sounds, the publisher promptly prints the music, - the performer promptly plays the music and the world promptly receives the benediction" wrote Alan Hovhaness on May 6,1975.

Extractions: The American composer, Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) who wrote about 400 works, including ten operas, sixty-three symphonies (best known are Mysterious Mountain, op. 132, And God Created Whales, op. 229 and Mount St. Helens Symphony, op. 360), a hundred choral works, plus dozens of vocal, chamber and instrumental pieces (including three works for accordion and two works for harmonica) composed a piece for Henry Doktorski titled Hymn. In a letter dated February 26, 1990, he wrote, "I improvised a hymn for you in 7/4 time a sacred rhythm three beats for heaven plus four beats for earth, as you are a religious man." Extractions: The Garden of Adonis - Alan Hovhaness (b. 1911) Alan Hovhaness is an American of Scottish/Armenian descent. As a composer he is astonishingly prolific: for instance, he has written well over 50 symphonies, and The Garden of Adonis, which was written as long ago as 1971, is his Op. 245! Much of his output is influenced by Indian and far Eastern music, and this is evident in parts of TheGarden of Adonis. Western music of the renaissance is also a strong influence. The title of the piece is taken from The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser: The Garden of Adonis is a garden of rebirth where souls appear as flowers. There are seven movements: I. The flute plays a seven-bar phrase three times, each time reaching higher than before, accompanied by the harp, which plays arpeggio figures outlining slowly changing harmonies. II. Although this cheerful movement is in 2/2 time, much of the structure depends on the number 5: there are 5-bar phrases, groups of five beats, groups of 5 crotchets etc. The harp plays a long solo, which is repeated with the addition of a flute obbligato. III. This has a similar form to the second movement, but the atmosphere is quite different: this is a slow, solemn oriental dance. After the repetition of the opening harp solo, with its added flute line, the flute itself has an unaccompanied solo.
