Van 1959 tot 1962 gaf hij les aan de Cirencester Grammar School, waar zijn belangstelling voor muziekpedagogiek werd gewekt. Sindsdien heeft hij veel muziek voor kinderen gecomponeerd of gearrangeerd. Davies heeft voor dit ensemble, dat hij ook dirigeerde, een groot aantal werken geschreven. In zijn muziek grijpt hij vaak terug naar compositietechnieken uit middeleeuwen en renaissance, die hij met een eigentijds idioom tracht te verbinden. Soms mondt dit uit in satire, wanneer bijvoorbeeld een plechtstatige 16de-eeuwse kerkstijl en een foxtrot door elkaar worden gebruikt. Sinds 1970 woont Davies op het eiland Hoy in Orkney (Schotland), waarvan het landschap en de verhaalcultuur voor zijn recentere werk een inspiratiebron vormen.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, vanligvis bare kalt Max, er nå bosatt på Orkenøyene, men reiser verden rundt for å dirigere egne verk. I forbindelse med SSOs abonnementskonsert torsdag, vil han holde verkorienteringen før konserten og fortelle om det orkesteret skal spille. - Publikum får således en sjelden anledning til å møte en internasjonalt kjent og anerkjent komponist og den musikken han skriver, sier Stavanger Symfoniorksester i sin pressemelding. Konsertmester er Francecso Ugolini, mens Sir Peter Maxwell Davies som nevnt selv introduserer de enkelte verkene fra podiet. På programmet står verkene "Ojai Festival Ouverture"(1991), "Strathclyde, konsert nr. 10" (1996), "Konsert for horn og orkester" (1999) og "Maxwell`s Reel, with Northern Lights" (1998).
