    Extractions: Jump to the table of contents When in 1972 the first edition of Allen Strange's Electronic Music Systems, Techniques and Controls was published, the magenta, blue and white covered book rapidly became ubiquitous. It was the first comprehensive and useful guide to the subject, and was relatively easy to obtain. It had occasional errors of detail, and was involved in the technological tumult before general standards were agreed upon, so that some of the illustrative graphic symbols became relies. Nonetheless, that edition proved quite robust. At least two factors explain the first edition's survival for nearly a decade. Firstly, Allen Strange organized the relatively new and complex material so that it evolved with pedagogical sensibility. Secondly, his explanations of conceptual matters were lucid. This lucidity may be due to a balance in the author's own world. He is an experienced performer of electronic and acoustical instruments, a versatile composer, a historian-theorist of diverse cultural background, and a very effective teacher. In the ensuing years several other books on the subject appeared. Some contributed updated material, and others devoted more attention to certain areas, though often at the expense of others. In spite of the example set by Allen Strange's book, none of the others seems to have achieved his balanced presentation. And few matched his marvelous attitude towards the subject, an attitude which induced the reader to be alert to the many possibilities of a rapidly developing creative medium.

It’s a shame, too, considering the depth of the man’s career – not only was he connected with Cage and Oliveros, but he also helped found the ONCE Festivals, worked with people like David Tudor and Anthony Braxton, and explored the connections between computers, acoustic instruments, and performance long before it was the hip thing to do. In short, he helped reshape modern composition and laid the groundwork for much of today’s contemporary electronic and avant-garde performance. And still, save for an article in a recent issue of the Wire, little attention has been paid to Mumma. With any luck, however, that will all change with Tzadik’s release of Live-Electronic Music

A historically important performance. INDETERMINACY John Cage himself reads his stories at the rate of one per minute while David Tudor simultaneously and asynchronously performs the piano solo from the 'Concert for Piano and Orchestra' (1958). Tudor's great and Cage's stories are funny, touching, and intelligent. If you don't have this 2-CD set, you're missing an important part of life. MUSIC FOR MERCE CUNNINGHAM Here's an important moment in the early history of electronic performance: John Cage's 'Cartridge Music' (1960), for phonograph cartridges and amplified small objects, played by David Tudor, Michael Pugliese, and Takehisa Kosugi. Appena arrivato all'universita' di Ann Arbor, si mise in luce per le straordinarie colonne sonore che componeva per le piece teatrali dei compagni di scuola. Dopo i primi esperimenti in area gestuale, come Meanwhile del 1961 (il cui spartito contiene i gesti che gli esecutori dovranno compiere per produrre il suono), Mumma incontro' Ashley e l'artista Milton Cohen, con i quali allesti' uno spettacolo multimediale destinato ad evolversi nello "Space Theatre", una pietra miliare dei "light show" elettronici. Mumma nel frattempo componeva musica per festival d'avanguardia e manifestazioni varie, in gran parte servendosi di modulazioni di frequenza. Tipica degli spettacoli dello Once e' Megaton Lo Space Theatre , presentato nel 1964 alla Biennale di Venezia, e' uno spettacolo della durata di un'ora, composto di proiezioni, sculture, danza e musica. Il suono di Mumma insegue le immagini astratte che corrono lungo le pareti della sala. La sezione centrale e' un pezzo di borbogliante musica concreta, chiuso fra un blocco di sibili e uno di cigolii. Conclude l'opera un cerchio di vibrazioni discrete, pulsazioni aliene in silenzio irreale, segnali Morse dall'interspazio. Storicamente e' un brano importante, perche' raccorda i vecchi stili "concreti" e gli stili piu' trascendentali emersi durante i primi anni Sessanta.
