He was a "composer of sacred and secular music, one of the great masters of the Franco-Flemish style that dominated European music of the Renaissance" (Britannica 866). Ockegham was the leading composer of the generation between Dufay and Josquin (New Oxford 1286). Earliest historical references place him in the cathedral of Notre Dame in Antwerp as a singer in 1443 (New Grove 489). In the mid-1440s he was in the service of Charles, the duke of Bourbon also as a singer. By as early as 1451 Ockeghem had been invited to join the chapel of the French king Charles VII (New Grove 490). With the exception of his travels, he remained at the French court the rest of his life, "serving three successive monarchs (Charles VII, Louis XI, and Charles VII) (New Oxford 1286). Ockeghem's influences were many. He "knew Binchois of Burgundy, and mourned his passing in a lament of touching beauty" (Heritage 42). This was a gesture indicating that the two men were more than casually acquainted and suggesting that the elder had been Ockeghem's mentor. Ockeghem, in turn, was honored with a motet by Busnois at about the same time, in any case before 1467. Knowledgeable writers of the period such as Molinet and Tinctoris almost invariably linked Ockeghem with these two men and usually with Dufay as well. Since these three had connections with the ducal chapel of Burgundy, particularly Binchois and Busnois, Ockeghem must have been familiar with the music of that court, thus sharing with his most famous contemporaries a common fund of musical experience, stylistic concepts and compositional procedures (New Grove 489).

Ockeghem was probably born in the current Belgium, in what was then the Duchy of Burgundy - estimates for the year of his birth vary from 1400 to c.1430, but written sources from the period indicate that he was a very old man by the time of his death in 1497. He was premier chaplain to three kings of France, as well as holding the prestigious position of treasurer at the great cathedral and monastery of St. Martin de Tours. During his lifetime, Ockeghem was known for his personal refinement and fine bass voice. After his death, a famous poem by Guillaume Cretin (set to music by Josquin Desprez) praised his character, skill, and influence. He was long identified as one of the fathers of Renaissance music, his influence finally fading only years after his death. Extractions: Where Dufay 's music impresses us by its grace, soaring majesty, and formal clarity, Ockeghem presents an entirely different musical personality: moody, flamboyant, enigmatic. In common with so many composers of the era, Ockeghem was trained as a singer. His deep bass voice was greatly admired and may explain his fondness for exploring previously unnavigated subterranean registers. A characteristic aspect of Ockeghem's music is its integration of old medieval techniques of hidden structures into the new contrapuntal Renaissance style. One notable example is the use of canon in his Missa Prolationum (Mass of the Time Signatures). Each movement of this four-part piece contains two different canons sung simultaneously, with each part moving at a different speed. No less astonishing are his Missa Cuiusvis toni (Mass in any mode) which may be sung in any one of four modes, and the motet

Possibly a pupil of the eminent composer Gilles Binchois (1400-1460), Ockeghem served as composer and choirmaster to three French kings: Charles VII, Louis XI, and Charles VIII. At his death, a Déploration (lament) was composed by his pupil (according to tradition), the French composer Josquin Desprez, and a lament by the philosopher Erasmus was set to music by the French composer Johannes Lupi (c. 1506-39). Ockeghem's masses, motets, and chansons (secular part-songs) show great skill at counterpoint based on melodic imitation.

It had at one time been surmised that he was Flemish, but in any event, all of modern Belgium was then within the Duchy of Burgundy. Estimates for the year of his birth vary considerably from 1400 to c.1430, but written sources from the period indicate that he was a very old man by the time of his death in 1497. He was premier chaplain to three kings of France, as well as holding the prestigious position of treasurer at the great cathedral and monastery of St. Martin de Tours. During his lifetime, Ockeghem was known for his personal refinement and fine bass voice. After his death, a famous poem by Guillaume Cretin (set to music by Josquin Desprez) praised his character, skill, and influence. He was long identified as one of the fathers of Renaissance music, his influence finally fading only years after his death. Ockeghem's surviving musical output is relatively small, comprising a mere handful of motets, several masses, and a couple of dozen secular chansons. His style is marked by a careful handling of vocal ranges in a primarily four-voice texture, and an emphasis on complex and expressive bass lines. This emphasis on lower textures opened up a new world of structural possibilities for Renaissance composers, and Ockeghem's compositions exploit these potentials in a variety of ways.
