Extractions: Literary influences: H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe were the masters of classic horror and could create stories that were both eloquently written and chillingly frightening. I also have to mention Stephen King because his stories have given me many sleepless nights. Yet I am still drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Of course I can not forget Bram Stoker , for reasons which will become obvious after reading the following story. Artistic statement: Because the horror genre often is not given the respect it deserves, I try to write stories that avoid cliche themes and bring a fresh perspective to the genre. In "Following Her Path", I have tried to bring the old vampire story into a modern setting with characters who are real people reacting to their situation in a believable way. I want this to be a story that people would enjoy even if they don't usaallly read horror fiction. I absolutely abhor stories that rely on blood and gore to provide shock value; I prefer the subtle approach, and find that in the end, that gives a story much more impact.

I later attended St Martins College and got my Masters in Counseling Psychology in 1998. So I am figuring if I go for my PhD or PsyD that my target date is 2008 so I can keep on the ten-year cycle but at this time it is a BIG "IF" I go to school again. Since graduating, I have been teaching and counseling. I love to do both! But I took this time of big change (moving back to Seattle) to contemplate the next wants in life. I have family in both Olympia and Seattle and I enjoy both places and all they have to offer. At this time I am keeping my counseling private practice in Olympia and plan on setting up an office in Seattle in the future. I love the outdoors, every season. I love the open vastness the ocean offers and I love the darkness and dampness the woods offer and everything in between. In the previous summer, I hiked Mt Rainier for five days by myself for a fundraiser for the Olympia DV/SA Agency. I was going to go all the way around Mt. Rainier for twelve days but Sept 11 put an end to that plan so I came back home. I am planning my first trip to Great Britain next autumn and am eager to learn more about my family history. I am the Volunteer Advocate Coordinator. I oversee the crisis line and have the fun of recruiting, training and retaining volunteers who work with the people ADWAS serves. ADWAS attracts powerful creative brilliant women and I am ecstatic to be surrounded by their power. My life is committed to ending violence and oppression and I am very fortunate to be at ADWAS to work in this powerful community. I have worked in the DV/SA field for 15 plus years. I credit my father for lighting that flame. When I was very young I asked my father why there was war. He said, "Anne, families don't get along how do you expect countries to?"

Her first book of stories, Black Tickets , published in 1979 when she was 26, won the prestigious Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, awarded by the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Following Sweethearts was Counting Black Tickets How Mickey Made It Fast Lanes (1984) and her two novels, Machine Dreams (1984) and Shelter Phillips (b.1952) was raised by a very close knit family. Her mother, Martha Jane, was a reading teacher and urged Phillips to read and write often. After attending West Virginia University, where she published her poetry and a few short stories in magazines, she attended the University of Iowa to receive her MFA in 1976. Since 1982 she has been an adjunct professor at Boston University. In 1985, she married Mark Stockman, with whom she has three sons. Her family has a very important impact on her writing (Ryan 2337). Publishers Weekly In 1976, at the age of twenty-seven, Jayne Anne Phillips published Sweethearts and soon after in 1979 followed Counting . Although the two collections of short stories were smaller press books, Sweethearts won the Pushcart Prize by Pushcart Press and also the 1978 Fels award in fiction from the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines. Counting won the St. Lawrence award for fiction in 1979. These are just a few of the numerous awards that Phillips has received throughout her writing career.
