Roman's contribution to the musical life of this period is not confined to his work as a composer but extends over a wide field of activity, for he was Kapellmeister to the court and was responsible for the inauguration of regular public concerts in Stockholm, at which he introduced to the Swedish public the work of many of the most important composers of his time (including Handel). He did much to vindicate the use of Swedish in the setting of sacred texts and exercised a decisive influence on the development of an independent Swedish tradition of vocal writing both in the sphere of sacred and secular music. 1.     Extractions: Master of the Swedish royal chapel and a leading composer in Sweden in the first half of the 18th century, Johan Helmich Roman studied in England with Pepusch, compiler of the music of The Beggar's Opera. His music shows distinct traces of his experience in England, where he also met composers such as Handel and Geminiani. He was a prolific composer in various genres. Orchestral Music The best known composition by Roman is his Drottningsholm Music for the royal wedding of the Crown Prince and his Prussian bride in 1744. Other surviving music includes sinfonias, concertos, suites and overtures. Chamber Music Roman's chamber music includes flute sonatas and trio sonatas, characteristic of the transitional style current in the middle of the eighteenth century.

Af hans kompositioner har endast en blifvit utgifven nämligen XII sonate a flauto traverso, violone e cembalo , som utkom 1727, men Musikaliska akademiens bibliotek förvarar i handskrift af honom stora, härliga tonskapelser, mestadels i andlig stil. Han skref emellertid dessutom symfonier, uvertyrer, konserter för violin och oboe d'amour, klaverstycken äfvensom ett stort antal kompositioner till kungliga festligheter. För öfrigt kan nämnas, att han, jämte det han försåg tonskapelser af Händel och andra tonsättare med svensk text, från främmande språk öfversatte åtskilliga afhandlingar. Vetenskapsakademien ägnade hans minne en festlig hyllning d. 30 maj 1767. Åbo akademi, dit större delen af hans musikverk skänktes, gömde af denne musikers skapande snille dyrbara skatter, innan de förtärdes af lågorna vid branden 1827.

    Extractions: JOHAN HELMICH ROMAN (1694 - 1758) was the central figure in the musical life of the Swedish era of peace following this country's decline as a great power, and is regarded as one of the foremost composers Sweden has ever had. During his years of study in England 1716-21 and in the course of a journey to England, France, Italy and Germany 1735-37 he aquired detailed knowledge of the musical trends of the period. As conductor of the court orchestra he did important work from the 1720's to the 1740's. Amongst other things he introduced Handel's music in Sweden and took active part in the development of public concert life in Stockholm in the 1730's. His rich production includes occasional music for celebrations at court etc., sacred choral works, sacred and secular songs as well as works for different instrumental ensembles. Roman's style incorporates impressions from many quarters, chiefly from Handel and contemporary Italians such as Lotti, Leo, Ariosti, G.B. Bononcini and Geminiani, probably also Locatelli and Tartini. At a remarkably early stage one finds in him the stylistic manner of the late baroque with an admixture of "style galant", something which is particularly noticeable in the instrumental works. These comprise orchestral suites with several movements, sinfonias of three and four movements, trio sonatas, solo sonatas with basso continuo, compositions for solo violin and keyboard music. In the vocal field his chief contributions were the promotion of a Swedish monody in the form of song with continuo and his conscious endeavour to show "the flexi- bility of the Swedish language for church music".
