Extractions: In the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries it is difficult to speak of a French musical idiom distinct from that of Burgundy or the Netherlands. The culture of Burgundy, as well as that of most of the Netherlands provinces, was French. Pierre de La Rue and Josquin des Prez , though of Flemish descent, were culturally French, and their very names are probably French translations of Flemish names. While some of the texts employed by the Josquin formes fixes, The new chansons enjoyed wide dissemination, greatly aided by the activities of several famous French printers. Such works appeared in the publications of the first French music printer, Pierre Attaignant , who between 1528 and 1552 brought out in Paris more than fifty collections of chansons, about 1,500 pieces altogether. Other publishers soon followed Attaingnant's lead. The popularity of the chanson is attested by hundreds of transcriptions for the lute and arrangements for solo voice with lute accompaniment which were published during the sixteenth century in both France and Italy. The typical chansons of the earliest Attaingnant collections resembled in many respects the Italian frottola and the canti carnascialeschi.

Si l'on se fie à un document comptable de la cour relatif aux funérailles de Louis XII (1515), il aurait également été chanteur du feu roi. C'est donc en tant que chanteur qu'il aurait pris part à la messe célébrée par les chapelles du roi de France et du pape à Bologne le 13 décembre 1515, aux cérémonies du Camp du Drap d'Or en 1520, ainsi qu'à celles de Boulogne-sur-Mer, durant lesquelles les chapelles françaises et anglaises exécutèrent une messe. Sermisy semble avoir quitté Paris pour devenir chanoine de Notre-Dame-de-la-Rotonde à Rouen, avec obligation de résidence dans cette ville. Il résilie cette charge en 1524 pour se rendre dans le diocèse d'Amiens. Claudin de Sermisy rejoint la capitale en 1532, cette fois en tant que sous-maître de la Chapelle Royale (il succéde à A. de Longueval) sous l'autorité de François de Tournon, ami de François Ier, ministre de celui-ci et auteur d'un texte mis en musique par Sermisy:

Ronsard le déclare élève de Janequin ; c'est un ami de Claudin de Sermisy , de Pierre Attaingnant l'éditeur et de Thomas Champion l'organiste du roi. Un peu dédaigné à l'heure actuelle, Pierre Certon a pourtant été reconnu par les écrivains et poètes de son temps, puisqu'il fait partie (avec Josquin , Mouton, Willaert, Richafort, Janequin , Maillard, Sermisy , Moulu, Berchem et Arcadelt ) des musiciens présents à la fois dans la liste de Rabelais et dans celle de Ronsard. Plus étonnant encore, il figure sur la liste de contrapuntistes franco-flamands des Tons et discours sur les Modes de Musique de Pierre Maillart en 1610, alors que Janequin et Sermisy en sont absents.
