Extractions: USA Review by Henry Doktorski The German composer, Gerhard Stabler (b. 1949), began his affiliation with new music in the 1960's and became active with radical street theater, creating the music for several plays. His music often expresses political and social concerns. Stabler currently teaches music theory at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen and was the artistic director of World Music Days 1995 in Ruhrgebiet. He has presented lectures and concerts throughout Europe, Asia and North America and has taught at numerous American universities, including Stanford, Yale, Columbia and Wesleyan. He recently completed a two-month concert/lecture tour of the United States and Canada. Stabler (who is also an accordionist) wrote, "Why the accordion plays a prominent role in my oeuvres is most evident in my work fallen, fallen . . . und liegen und fallen for soprano, tuba, accordion and tape (1988/89), as the instrument is chosen because of its unique characteristics. The music is based on poems by Paul Celan and requires relating to the multi-layered content and the compositional concept a continuum of sound from technically produced electronic sounds on tape to the voice of a human being.

Extractions: Edition zkm Review by Steve Mobia The Japanese mouth organ called a "sho" is a direct predecessor to the accordion. Over 3,000 years old, it consists of 17 bamboo pipes of different lengths joined by a bowl shaped wind chamber. The player holds the instrument in front of their face and plays by blowing into it while opening and closing holes. Metal tongues vibrate to create the sound. It has traditionally been used in Japanese court music along with flutes, zithers and lutes. The music accompanied religious festivals as well as official state affairs and banquets. The sound of the sho is not unlike the accordion, though it has a thinner delicate quality and lacks any bass resonance. The pitches can sound on both inhaling and exhaling and so can produce extended tones as can the accordion (reversing the breath similar in effect to reversing the bellows).

Extractions: BU Linksters Have Strong Showing At Stabler Collegiate Invitational Kosteva loses on 4th playoff hole for overall championship Oct. 14, 2000 BETHLEHEM, Pa. - This past weekend, October 13-14, the Bucknell men's golf team competed at the Stabler Collegiate Invitational on the golf course at Center Valley Country Club. The Bison shot a two-day total of 616 (309-307), finishing only one stroke back from the ninth place team, host Lehigh. Senior Ken Kosteva (Berwick, Pa./Central Columbia) had an exciting weekend for the Orange and Blue as he finished in a tie for the overall lead after 36-holes of golf. Kosteva, who shot a first round 71, finished the day on Saturday with a 74, which was good enough to tie him with George Washington's Bryan Derdenger at 145. After a double-bogey at the 10th hole and a triple-bogey at the 11th hole, Kosteva responded by birdying the next two holes to get back to two over par and in an eventual tie for the lead. The two golfers then proceeded to a sudden death playoff to decide the invitational's victor. Kosteva missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole and that would turn out to be his only chance. Derdenger put the nail in the coffin on the fourth playoff hole to take the victory and leave Bucknell's Kosteva with a fine second place finish.

After placing 12th after day one of the invitational, the Bison shot a 305 over the final 18 holes to wind up with a two-day total of 617. Senior Nick Leibowitz was Bucknell's top performer for the second day in a row, shooting a 75 for the second consecutive round to finish with a 36-hole score of 150, good for a 14th-place tie out of 99 competitors. Freshman Tyler Braun and sophomore Charles Markey each recorded a 76 on day two to finish with an identical 154 to tie for 37th place. Also adding to the team score was sophomore
