The world of music mourns his passing, yet one is glad and grateful that he was able to live so long and so full a life; one, moreover, that was so rich in achievement. He was a Gloucestershire man, born at Down Ampney on 12 October 1872, and all his life he had the look and the manner of a countryman. His utterance was downright, his views were robust. In his music he expressed the essential spirit of England as perhaps no other composer has ever done before. He was never one to inhabit an ivory tower; he took an active part in music-making, and an active interest in all causes in which he believed. He went on writing music of an astonishing freshness and vitality to the day of his death; his Ninth Symphony was produced only last April. He was a great man as well as a great musician; revered and beloved wherever he was known. Musical Times, October 1958

Comme Kodály et Bartók en Hongrie, il entreprit de sauver ce genre musical de l'oubli, dans lequel il s’enfonçait peu à peu. En 1903 il devint du reste membre de la Folk Song Society. Sa notoriété est largement due à l'intégration ingénieuse et originale qu’il sut réaliser entre ces sources authentiquement populaires, avec leurs harmonies, intervalles et rythmes propres, et une musique savante qui plonge ses racines dans la tradition de l’École anglaise qui remonte au XVIIe siècle ainsi que dans celle de Jean Sébastien Bach.     Extractions: Vaughan Williams was a late starter as far as film music was concerned, writing his first score, 49th Parallel , in his sixty-eighth year. However, the most ambitious of his eleven scores was probably that for Scott Of The Antarctic which is the main feature on this Chandos release of the composer's film music. The CD is part of Chandos' outstanding series of "Film Music Of" recordings by the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Rumon Gamba. As with many of the other albums in this series, 'The Film Music Of Ralph Vaughan Williams' contains much music previously unavailable on CD and some available for the first time in any format.

    Extractions: Ralph Vaughan Williams was born on 12 October 1872 in Gloucestershire. His connection with Dorking began at the age of two, when the family returned to Leith Hill Place, where he spent his childhood. Music was important to R.V.W. from a very young age, and he continued his musical tuition throughout his school years, attending the Royal College of Music studying composition, before going on to Cambridge in 1892. R.V.W. became the conductor of the Leith Hill Musical Festival in 1905, taking up permanent residence in Dorking in 1929. It did not take long for the composer to become involved in many local organisations, including the local Dramatic and Operatic Society, the Rotary Club, and the Dorking and Leith Hill District Preservation Society. His connections with what is now Dorking Halls started in the 1920s, when the Public Hall was adapted into a cinema. This development meant that there was no civil building available to accommodate large numbers at concerts, conferences and other large social gatherings. The Leith Hill Musical Festival was moved to the Drill Hall, which was widely considered to be unsuitable, and the Committee (of which R.V.W. was a member) campaigned successfully for the provision of Dorking Halls "as an indispensable amenity of the town" (
