5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest masterpiece of Spanish piano music
This book is a must for here we have Isaac Albéniz's masterpiece, Iberia. I wonder why we do not hear Spanish piano music more often? These 12 pieces are rich in Spanish flavor and the composer's idiom. Evocación, El Puerto, Triana, are but three of the wonderful works found in this collection. A great buy for pianists everywhere. Dover provides so much good music in attractive, affordable editions, and greatly enhances a musician's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isaac Albeniz. Iberia. The best spanish author.
This book shows all the feeling that Spain has prepared to you to experience... As a impresionist, inluenced by Debussy, Albeniz knows how to transmit all the Spain pasion, in a somehow complicated Iberia. ... Read more

Excerpt: Pepita Jiménez is a lyric comedy or comic opera with music written by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. The original opera was written in one act and used an English libretto by Albéniz's patron and collaborator, the Englishman Francis Money-Coutts, which is based on the novel of the same name by Juan Valera. The opera was later adapted several times, first by the composer and later by others, into numerous languages and different constructs, including both a two act version and a three act version. The first of the composer's three versions of Pepita Jiménez was written in Paris during 1895 and performed as a one-act opera using an Italian translation of the original English libretto by Angelo Bignotti. It premiered on January 5, 1896 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain with Emma Zilli portraying the title role. Originally the first Pepita was to have been the Romanian soprano Hariclea Darclée, but probably because of production delays the role went to Zilli. The work was not well reveived in its first form and Albéniz never published this version, deciding instead to immediately revise the score. During 1896 an expanded, two-act version was finished and, in preparation for a production at the Deutsches Landestheater in Prague, published by Breitkopf ... Read more

Excerpt: Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, to a successful family with strong community ties, she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. After she studied at the Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she spent a short time at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family's house in Amherst. Thought of as an eccentric by the locals, she became known for her penchant for white clothing and her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, even leave her room. Most of her friendships were therefore carried out by correspondence. Although Dickinson was a prolific ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=159275 ... Read more

Excerpt: Josep Ferran Sorts i Muntades (baptised 14 February 1778 died 10 July 1839, Paris) was a Spanish guitarist and composer. He is best known for his guitar compositions, but he also composed music for opera and ballet, earning acclaim for his ballet titled Cendrillon. Sors works for guitar range from pieces for advanced players, such as Variations on a Theme of Mozart, to beginner pieces. Sor gave concerts throughout Europe, including in England, Paris, Berlin and Warsaw. Before the early 1800s, the guitar was little known in England. Sor seems to have created a market for himself there and then met the demand. Sors contemporaries considered him to be the best guitarist in the world, and his works for guitar have been widely played and reprinted since his death. As Sor's works were published in various countries, his name was translated, leading to variations in the spelling. Variations have included Joseph Fernando Macari Sors, Fernando Sor, Ferran Sor, Ferdinand Sor, and Ferdinando Sor. Musician and his Family, French o...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=463819 ... His concert career began at the young age of nine when his father toured both Isaac and his sister, Clementina, throughout northern Spain. By the time he had reached 12, he had made many attempts to run away from home. At the age of 12 he stowed away in a ship bound for Buenos Aires. He then made his way via Cuba to the United States, giving concerts in New York and San Francisco and then travelled to Liverpool, London and Leipzig. By age 15, he had already given concerts worldwide. After a short stay at the Leipzig Conservatory, in 1876 he went to study in Brussels. In 1880, he went to Budapest to study with Franz Liszt, only to find out that Liszt was in Weimar, Germany. In 1883, he met the teacher and composer Felip Pedrell, who inspired him to write Spanish music such as the Chants d'Espagne. The first movement (Prelude) of that suite, later retitled after the composer's death as Asturias (Leyenda), is probably most famous today as part of the classical guitar rep...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15208 ... Excerpt: Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20, 1893 December 25, 1983; Catalan pronunciation: ) was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist born in Barcelona. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting. Born to the families of a goldsmith and watchmaker, the young Miró was drawn towards the arts community that was gathering in Montparnasse and in 1920 moved to Paris. There, under the influence of the poets and writers, he developed his unique style: organic forms and flattened picture planes drawn with a sharp line. Generally thought of as a Surrealist because of his interest in automatism and the use of sexual symbols (for example, ovoids with wavy lines emanating from them), Mirós style was influenced in varying degrees by Surrealism and Dada, yet he rejected membership to any artistic movement in the interwar European years. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, described him as "the most Surrealist of us all." Miró confessed to creating one of his most famous works, Harlequin's Carnival, under similar circumstances: "How did I think up my drawings and my ide...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=63093 ...
