Dowani 3 Tempi Play Along is an effective and time-tested method of practicing that offers more than conventional play-long editions. Dowani 3 Tempi Play Along enables you to learn a work systematically and with accompaniment at different tempi. The first thing you hear on the CD is the concert version in a first-class recording with solo instrument and orchestral, continuo, or piano accompaniment. Then the piano or harpsichord accompaniment follows in slow and medium tempo for practice purposes with the solo instrument heard softly in the background at a slow tempo. Finally, you can play at the original tempo to the accompaniment of an orchestra, piano, or basso continuo. All versions appearing on the CD were recorded live by renowned soloists, accompanists, and orchestras. There are no synthesised sounds in a Dowani edition! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book about Beethoven
I love Beethoven and his music. This look into his personal life is fascinating and enlightening.I couldn't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insight into a master.
Reading these letters feel like I'm being granted a rare insight into Beethoven's personal life.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEETHOVEN"A Look Behind The Notes"
Beethoven's Letters
As a pianist, teacher, adjudicator, examiner, critic and author, I am often presented with performances of Beethoven's works that offer no insight or understanding of Beethoven the man or his music! When giving master classes, I encourage students to read his letters and analyze his music before attempting to perform it. Most consider Beethoven an unpleasant, angry, reclusive human being! Beethoven's letters prove these thoughts to be totally invalid! When writing to his brothers (Heiligenstadt Testament),Beethoven shows an essence of lament because he is so distraught about the false opinions of others toward him. In his letter's we find the true essence of this great man.
Beethoven was a man of morality, truth, and beauty very much like Schubert. Beethoven's deep love of nature is well-known and well documented in his letters and shows in his music too! He was a deeply religious man. Beethoven's attitude may have been more of conventional Catholic ecclesiastical views, but as his letters show, there are countless evidences of his spirituality.
In Beethoven's letter's the fundamental differences are clear. I feel the most important ones are these:
Purity. There is never one single moment of something demonic or unhealthy in his music.
Dignity. He is always completely honest in his music. And there is never a trace of something that might be interpreted as self pity. Pain and sorrow, yes, but nothing to suggest that he ever felt sorry for himself.
His letter's convey a very good guess that Beethoven's deafness may have been a result of his attempts to press his excellent hearing sense to the extreme in order to gain the ultimate understanding of music! The reading of Beethoven's letters is paramount for those who truly want to know the essence of the man and how to approach performing his music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
How could it not be fascinating? The real thing - he was not writing with the thought that his letters would ever be published and as the editor says - how can we judge a genius by ordinary means??His personal life was extreme, but his letters show us the real man with a true heart and extreme emotions. I just loved this book. I'm not a music specialist - this book is written for the general public - I love classical music and play the piano - but now as I play Beethoven his life rings out more meaningfully to me and I forgive him his sins of passion - as I thrill in playing the music of this genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beethoven as a Person
This is a fascinating book told by Beethoven himself. Considering the large volume of compositions written by Beethoven, it is amazing the amount of Beethoven's letter-writing. Many of his letters describe work-in-progress. Others talk about his patrons, fellow musicians, publishers, and personal friends. There are even some letterswritten to some of the women Beethoven admired. There are musical quotations of different compositions that were works-in-progress. Some of the pages show copies of some of Beethoven's actual scores. The translator lavishly uses footnotes to describe the historical background surrounding the period of Beethoven's life. ... Product Description

This picture book for the whole family tells the story of Ludwig van Beethoven who is generally regarded as one of music's greatest composers. His story is especially inspiring since he had completely lost his hearing by age 31. He composed nine symphonies, as well as hundreds of sonatas, concertos, and songs. The illustrations provide a visual reference for the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A chronology makes this especially useful for elementary and middle school music reference collections. The 50-minute CD that is included with this book has excerpts from some of his most beloved works including Moonlight Sonata and his magnificent Ninth Symphony.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, but riddled with errors
As has been mentioned by other reviewers, this item is cheap, more-or-less convenient to look at size-wise, and durable. If you're casually following the score to Beethoven's last two symphonies, particularly the 8th where there are fewer editorial issues, then it'll do OK. But know that there are plenty of annoyances and errors here, especially in the 9th Symphony. The second bassoon doubling of the basses during the second orchestral pass of the finale's main theme is missing. Instruments aren't identified on every score page, measure numbers are omitted, and archaic soprano clefs (instead of treble clefs) are used for the choral and solo soprano parts. Of course the instrument names, etc., appear in German only, since this is a cheap reprint of a Public Domain 19th Century German edition.

Still, if you can't afford big bucks for something like the recent Del Mar "urtext" edition, this edition will do...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Value for Casual Readers
These Dover score editions are best known for their low prices. For the Beethoven symphonies, these are pretty much just reproductions of the 1865 Litolff edition, which contains numerous mistakes that were corrected in later, better editions. The 9x12 format is good for the full score format, making it easy to view all the orchestral parts at the same time. The note heads are big enough to be clearly legible.

Knowing the deficiency of the source edition, my major complaint is there are no measure numbers so it's a big inconvenience for anyone wishing to study specific points in the score.

BTW, all these are available for free download as PDF on [...].But for me, having these in a book format beats having to print out page after page of PDF which gets messy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Let the BUYER BEWARE!!!
While Dover's many scores represent an amazing value across the musical repertoire, their collection and reprint of the Litolff Edition of the Beethoven Symphonies was a mistake. For the casual buyer they are workable, but not for serious use in performance, as they are riddled with editorial mistakes and problems. Purchaser would be better advised to find a set of the miniature (octavo-sized) Bärenreiter critical scores. They are bound just as nicely and the paper is of excellent quality. I use the full-size Bärenreiter set when I conduct my orchestra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful big format scores for study and writing notes about your observations
If Beethoven's Ninth symphony is acknowledged as one of the supreme achievements of the musical arts and had an almost immeasurable impact on the 19th century, his eight symphony is far too lightly regarded. You can examine these two works in this very nice edition of the works. As you listen to the eight you will notice all the subtle rhythmic devices Beethoven provides to work his magic. You will also find the Ninth a wonderful adventure. How are those mountains of sound built in the first movement out of nothing? How are the voices set in the last? What about those crashing tympani in the second?

I appreciate the Dover edition of these works because the large format makes for easier reading and provides room for making notes while you are studying. For example, you might want to make something special or unique to one recording so that when you listen to another you can compare the two.

And if you don't read music very well, these symphonies are a good place to start. You can listen to the music and what the shapes go by.And eventually you will get used to the link between the sound and what you see. These scores are not as dense as, say Mahler or Strauss or works with huge orchestras. So, the classics make a great way to get into the pool, so to speak.Honestly, even if you can't read the notes, you will notice things after a few listenings that you had not heard before because you see the `shape' in the score.

The Dover editions are also very durable and will last for many years of use. These editions are nice and clear and easy on the eyes because the contrast between the dark ink and light paper is very good, but not blinding.

Recommended.Expand your horizons!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Beethoven Score
Like the other two books in Dover's Beethoven Symphonies set, the score to the Eighth and Ninth are wonderful. The print is large and very readable. The best part is the low price. This is a must for the starving (music) student, teachers, listeners, and professionals alike.I highly reccommend it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beethoven symphonies 5, 6 and 7
I've been listening to classical music for 54 years now, and Beethoven continues to be my favourite composer. I am not a musician myself and am just beginning to learn how to read music (it's never too late!). For some years now I've been curious to see how the music I love so much looks in writing, and I was glad to see that I could get the scores of these three most famous symphonies for such a good price. I don't know what a professional musician or conductor would say about them, perhaps they require a different set up for the scores, but in my case it's been a thrilling experience to be able to follow (not perfectly yet, of course)what I am listening to in the scores. It's been a real pleasure, even when I get lost... which happens often!

4-0 out of 5 stars At this price it can't be beat
I agree with a previous reviewer that these are not good for conducting work. These scores are reprints that lack the precision, clarity and readability of the Baerenreiter scores, which are based on recent scholarship. However, just for casual listening and studying purposes, they do fine and are much more affordable than Baerenreiter.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will hear these works more clearly watching the score while you listen
Beethoven's Fifth, Sixth (Pastorale), and Seventh symphonies are among his most popular works. While I am sure you can hear the opening motive of the Fifth in your mind, it is typical to hear it as a triplet with a strong articulation of the first note. However, a quick look at the score will show you that it begins with an 8th rest and that the three notes are really three straight 8ths of G that flow into the strong downbeat on the E-flat.That is the kind of clarity you get from looking at the scores and making sure that you are hearing the music correctly. It makes a great deal of difference in how you make sense of the music. The same holds true for the Sixth and Seventh. You will love watching how the Horns are used in the Seventh and those groaning basses in the last movement.Just wonderful stuff.

I appreciate the Dover edition of these works because the large format makes for easier reading and provides room for making notes while you are studying. For example, you might want to make something special or unique to one recording so that when you listen to another you can compare the two.
