1-0 out of 5 stars Carmen
I can't review because I haven't received the score yet.

I'm thinking cancelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Can I Say?
What can I say about an opera score? It had the music reduced for piano and it had the lyrics. What more could you ask for?I bought this to study for my being cast in the chorus of the Hawaii Opera Theater production of "Carmen" next year.I got what I paid for.Again... what more can you ask?

Product Description

Unearthed from the archives of the Paris Conservatory nearly 80 years after its composition, Bizet's lively and youthful Symphony in C is one of the newest and most welcome additions to the orchestral repertoire. Written by a 17-year-old student, the elegant orchestrations and balanced classical forms foreshadow the composer's most famous work, the opera Carmen.

Product Description
"Carmen" is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world and the genesis of the work is exceptionally well documented. In spite of this, none of the editions published after the composer's death correspond to his intentions. Now Didion's edition, of which a piano reduction (ED 7965) has already been published, at last reproduces the work as intended by Bizet. This new edition of the score draws on detailed study of sources not previously used. ... Read more

Excerpt:Georges Bizet item Poster from a c. 1896 American production Carmen is a French opéra comique by Georges Bizet . The libretto is by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy , based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée , first published in 1845, itself possibly influenced by the narrative poem The Gypsies (1824) by Alexander Pushkin . Mérimée had read the poem in Russian by 1840 and translated it into French in 1852. The opera premiered at the Opéra-Comique of Paris on 3 March 1875, but its opening run was denounced by the majority of critics. It was almost withdrawn after its fourth or fifth performance, and although this was avoided, ultimately having 48 performances in its first run, it did little to bolster sagging receipts at the Opéra-Comique. Near the end of this run, the theatre was giving tickets away in order to stimulate attendance. Bizet died of a heart attack, aged 36, on 3 June 1875, never knowing how popular Carmen would become. In October 1875 it was produced in Vienna, to critical and popular success, which began its path to worldwide popularity. It was not staged again at the Opéra Comique until 1883. Since the 1880s it has been one of the world's most performed operas and a staple of the operatic repertoire. Carmen appears as number four on Opera America 's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America. Bizet's final opera not only transformed the opéra comique genre that had been static for half a century, it virtually killed it. Within a few years, the traditional distinction between opera (serious, heroic and declamatory) and opéra comique (light-hearted, bourgeois and conversational with spoken dia... ... Read more

Kapitel: Carmen, Te Deum, L'arlésienne, Werkverzeichnis Nach Winton Dean Der Werke Von Georges Bizet, Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Djamileh, Ave Maria. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) is an opera in three acts by Georges Bizet, to a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. It was first performed on 30 September 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique (Théâtre-Lyrique du Châtelet) in Paris. Bizet's most successful opera apart from Carmen, it is notable for its colorful and exotic orchestration, and for its great friendship duet, Au fond du temple saint, one of the most famous in all opera. It is still regularly performed. The action takes place in Ceylon. The local fishermen elect Zurga as their leader. Nadir returns to the village, and he and Zurga recall how their friendship was once threatened when they both fell in love with an unknown priestess. They swear eternal friendship. The priestess Leila arrives for a vigil of prayer for the safety of the fishermen, and Nadir recognizes her as the woman he and Zurga had loved. In the night, he goes to her and they acknowledge their love for one another, but they are caught by the high priest Nourabad. For breaking her vow of chastity, she and Nadir are condemned to death. Zurga, feeling jealous and betrayed, discovered that in the past Leila had saved his life, and sets fire to the village to allow the two lovers to escape. The opera closes when Zurga is killed on the order of the high priest of Brahman, when he discovers Zurga's plot. ... Read more

Excerpt: Hector Berlioz (December 11, 1803 March 8, 1869) was a French Romantic composer, best known for his compositions Symphonie fantastique and Grande messe des morts (Requiem). Berlioz made significant contributions to the modern orchestra with his Treatise on Instrumentation. He specified huge orchestral forces for some of his works; as a conductor, he performed several concerts with more than 1,000 musicians. He also composed around 50 songs. Hector Berlioz was born in France at La Côte-Saint-André in the département of Isère, near Lyon. His father, a respected provincial physician and scholar, was responsible for much of the young Berlioz's education. His father was an ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=53424 ... Read more
