4-0 out of 5 stars Another beautiful loser
Based on a popular french movie with Gerard Depardieu (which had an american remake with Jodie Foster and Richard Gere), this musical has some wonderful moments. Some of the songs are really good, and they remind you of other musicals of the composers, such as LES MISERABLES and MISS SAIGON. Later, these composers brought THE PIRATE QUEEN which is also quite nice to listen. The elegant album presentation deserves attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the music
Oh, listening to these songs makes me a little sad because it is so beautiful and so moving, yet so unknown.I saw the original American touring cast when it hit Seattle, and it left my jaw hanging.I've seen just about every musical touring casts and on broadway and this is my favorite in terms of music. This cast doesn't compare to the broadway cast that I saw starring Hugh Panaro and Stephen Buntrock, but it still gives me chills.I especially love the tenor duets and I love the trio at the end with Martin, Arnaud, and Bertrande. I really hope they revive this musical someday.I feel very fortunate to be one of the lucky ones to have seen it.

5-0 out of 5 stars martin guerre awsome
This is an awesome yet frustrating musical, as the Geurre's are always to blame. Listen to it to get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen until it grows on you!
No one today writes musicals that compare with those of Boublil and Schonberg. And while the theme of Martin Guerre may not be as grand as Les Mis or Miss Saigon, and the music perhaps not as consistently gorgeous, the story is nonetheless quite dramatic and many of the songs truly stunning.

As in their other soundtracks, Schonberg & Boublil's characteristic duets make the melodies even more stirring and the emotions more heart-wrenching.How a previous reviewer could have said that "there is just no passion in the music" is way beyond me.I find "The Day has Come" and "Why" to be among most passionate songs I have ever heard.

And the musical performance of Joanna Riding as Bertrand is nothing short of breath-taking.

I highly recommend that you try it out.It did take me several listenings before it grew on me, but once it did, I found myself listening to it over and over and over again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why oh why did they change it?
For some reason (don't ask) I saw all three versions of this show - the very first original, the minor reworking and the British tour version, which is the one this soundtrack is from. The first two versions were amazing withsoaring harmonies, dramatic orchestral pieces and lovely lyrics. But unfortunately for the tour version they cut its balls off. They took out almost all of the best numbers - the prologue that gets into your brain for years after, 'Here Comes The Morning' and 'When Will Someone Hear,' both with beautiful melodies and sentiments that add and explain the emotion of the whole show, 'Working On The Land' that set the scene, and they even took away 'Bethlehem,' which is, I think, my favourite hymn (and I'm not even Christian!)

So, basically, when they did the tour version, they made the lyrics twee, the storyline so truncated that it became completely shallow, and took out all of the best bits (even Sleeping On Our Own, the traditional Boubil and Shonberg comedy routine!). Not such a problem for the soundtrack, but they also castrated the brilliant chase/fire/fight scene near the end, which was so dynamic with the original set, and became some plywood slowly and boringly burning down in the background in the tour version.
All in all, I'm going to continue listening to my original cast recording - and I'd advise anyone who can get hold of it to do the same. ... Read more

Excerpt: Alain Boublil is a librettist, born in Tunisia in 1941, best known for his collaborations with the composer Claude-Michel Schönberg. These include: Alain Boublils first musical, La Révolution Française, was the first-ever staged French rock opera. It was conceived by Boublil in 1973 after he watched the premiere of Jesus Christ Superstar in New York. The composer was Claude-Michel Schönberg, with whom Alain has since collaborated on a number of successful projects, including Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. Les Misérables first opened in Paris in 1980. On October 8, 1985, an English-language production of Les Misérables produced by Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Trevor Nunn premiered in London at The Royal Shakespeare Companys Barbican Theatre. The show transferred to the West Ends Palace Theatre on December 4, 1985. It is the longest-running musical in West End history. Productions based on the Nunn/Mackintosh staging of Les Misérables have been staged all over the world, including a second French production which opened in Paris in 1991. Worldwide, Les Misérables has been seen by over 50 million people, with a total box office gross of over $1.8 billion. Miss Saigon opened in London on September 20, 1989 where it played for 10 consecutive successful years at the Drury Lane Theatre. It spawned two US touring companies, a Toronto production and has been seen by more than 13.2 million people in North America for a gross of $612 million. The current US national touring production concludes its phenomenally successful run of more than five years this August in Buffalo. Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Dr. Michael Kunze (born 9 November 1943) is a German lyricist, book writer and librettist. Born in Prague, Kunze grew up in Munich. While studying law in the mid-1960s, he began writing song lyrics. In the late 1960s, Kunze had been a pop lyricist who wrote protest songs in German; when these tunes went out of style, he began producing pop records and commercials. Stars such as Holger Biege, Jürgen Drews, Münchener Freiheit, Nana Mouskouri, Peter Alexander, Sofia Rotaru and Udo Jürgens had some of their greatest hits with his songs. Kunze also had international success with Silver Convention, Julio Iglesias, Herbie Mann, Gilbert Bécaud, Lulu and Sister Sledge, among others; for these purposes he sometimes used the pseudonym "Stephan Prager" (composed of the name of his son, Stephan, and his birth city, Prague). Silver Convention's hit Fly, Robin, Fly reached number 1 in the US Billboard charts. At the height of his success he would occasionally withdraw from the pop scene in order to write books. Straße in Feuer (English: Highroad to the Stake: A Tale of Witchcraft) became a worldwide best-seller, to which the New York Times Book Review Supplement devoted a two-page review. In the 1980s, Kunze discovered the musical. His successful translations of the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard) and above all, of Stephen Sondheim (Company, Follies, Into the Woods), have brought him renown in the field. Likewise he is credited with the German versions of A Chorus Line, Little Shop of Horrors, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Elton John's Aida, and Wicked. Since the beginning of the 1990s, Kunze has written several of his own musicals. In 1990, together with his friend Sylvester Levay, he produced Hexen, Hexen, and in 1992, Elisabeth, which played for more than four years at the Theate...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Les Misérables, colloquially known as Les Mis or Les Miz, is a musical that was composed in 1980 by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil, and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. Sung through, it is one of the most well-known and performed musicals worldwide. On October 8, 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary on London's West End and became the longest-running West End musical in history following the performance. The production continues to this day at London's Queen's Theatre. Based on the 1862 Victor Hugo novel of the same name, it is set in early 19th-century France and follows the intertwining stories of a cast of characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The main characters are joined by an ensemble that includes prostitutes, student revolutionaries, factory workers, and others. The Tony Award-winning score features the song I Dreamed a Dream, sung as a solo by the character Fantine during the first act. Numerous Professional artists have recorded cover versions of this song since the musicial's premiere in October 1985, including Neil Diamond, Aretha Franklin, David Essex, and Michael Crawford. ... The item came in due time and in perfect condition.Thank you for a great transaction!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heat Is On In Saigon!
Fantastic!

This sheet music book is almost perfect - it features guitar chords for all songs, and the piano music is not too easy and not too hard.

However, the lyrics of some songs are different to those on the CD of the original London production.

The book itself is just like a program of the show, and the first few pages have many colour pictures of the London stage production.

Awesome show, great price, wonderful music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Musical Selections!!!
The play Miss Saigon alone is definitley one of the most heart felt and amazing produtions ever to be created for the stage. Having most of the songs to own in this piano/vocal book is fantastic, except I dont really like the lyrics for "Now That I've Seen Her," for I much prefer the ones Claire Moore sings on the original london cast soundtrack. Each song is unique, and there is something for pretty much every voice range in here. I am proud to own these choral selections and am so happy they were available to buy. Truly the some of the best music ever to hit broadway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful
Miss Saigon contains some of the most beautiful music ever to be performed on a Broadway stage. This book contains most of the music from the show, but considering the whole thing is sung, it would be impossible to contain it all at a resonable price.
The music is wonderful, and is an essential for many singers of musical theatre. Especially for mezzos.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!
I saw Miss Saigon on Broadway, and it was a wonderful experience, the best musical i've ever seen. The music is very great, and being able to play it on the piano and sing it is simply wonderful. ... Read more
