Product Description
These four pieces were written separately between 1901 and 1910 for cello and piano. They subsequently appeared in print in different versions, ranging from piano solo to full orchestra. The composer was himself a fine viola player, and, it is hoped, would have welcomed these transcriptions for viola and piano, published here for the first time. ... Read more

Chapters: Lionel Tertis, Nigel Kennedy, Rebecca Helferich Clarke, Frank Bridge, Frantisek Kotzwara, John Metcalfe, Roger Chase, Paul Silverthorne, Martin Outram, Cecil Forsyth, Simon Rowland-Jones. Excerpt:Cecil Forsyth was an English composer and musicologist. He was born in Greenwich on November 30, 1870, and he died in New York (to which he moved in 1914) on December 7, 1941. He studied at Edinburgh University and at the Royal College of Music (with Charles Villiers Stanford and Hubert Parry ), and played viola in various London Orchestras. His compositions include the Viola Concerto in G minor (which premiered at the Proms in 1903 with Émile Férir as soloist), the operas Westward Ho! and Cinderella , and the "choral ballad" Tinker, Tailor . His books about music include Music and Nationalism: A Study of English Opera (1911), Choral Orchestration (1920), A History of Music (1916--with Stanford), and A Digest of Music History (1923). Forsyth is arguably best known for his Orchestration , originally published in 1914 and revised in 1935. Dover published a reprint of this revision in 1983 with a new foreword by composer William Bolcom , who lauds especially its insight into instrumental culture and its wit. Conductor Adrian Boult recounts in Adrian Boult on Music how Forsyth advised Ralph Vaughan Williams about the orchestration of the latter's A London Symphony . Excerpt: César Leonardo Tovar (July 3, 1940 - July 14, 1994), nicknamed "Pepito" and "Mr. Versatility", was an infielder/outfielder and right-handed batter in Major League Baseball who played for the Minnesota Twins (1965-72), Philadelphia Phillies (1973), Texas Rangers (1974-1975), Oakland Athletics (1975-1976) and New York Yankees (1976). Tovar was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He was signed by the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1959 and, after being traded to Minnesota in late 1964, made his debut on April 12, 1965. The Twins made ample use of his ability to play a variety of positions; by 1967, Tovar divided his fielding season between third base (70 games), center field (64), second base (36), left field (10), shortstop (9) and right field (5), setting an American League record of 164 games played and leading the league with 649 at-bats. In addition, he was among the top 10 batters in runs, hits, doubles, triples, stolen bases, on base percentage, hit by pitch and sacrifice hits. At the end of the 1967 season, the Triple Crown Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski received all but one vote for the American League MVP award; the lone dissenting ballot was marked in favor of Tovar. On September 22, 1968, Tovar became the second player to play every position in a game, joining Bert Campaneris (Kansa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=668324 ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Frank Bridge," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Frank Bridge in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Frank Bridge when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Frank Bridge, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
