Product Description
Anton Bruckner's Eighth Symphony (1890), one of the last of the great Romantic symphonies, is a grandly complex masterpiece. This book explores this many-faceted work from several angles. It documents the complicated and often misunderstood history of the symphony's composition and revision and provides an accessible guide to its musical design. It demonstrates, by means of a study of well-known recordings, how performance styles have evolved in this century. It also revisits the conventional wisdom about the various versions and editions of the symphony and comes to some provocative new conclusions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book,a must read
If you care at all about this symphony or this era, do not miss this book - one of the best Cambridge handbooks (a superb series). Korstvedt not only clarifies the murky question of revisions, and helps us understand the creative process in this work and the structure and meaning - he also explodes what has become the conventional wisdom about editions. He makes a powerful case for the supposedly "corrupt" edition published in the composer's lifetime, showing how it profoundly changes our understanding of the meaning of the work, and discussing great early recordings based on this edition (and comparing them to some distinguished modern recordings). The chapter on performance traditions by itself is worth the price (only $10 used - what a deal!) A must-read, which I hope will be read not only by listeners but by Bruckner performers.

2-0 out of 5 stars An uninspired thesis retread
The substantive content of this slender volume is in absolute contrast to the greatness of this monumental symphony, arguably the most imposing symphony of the second half of the 19th century. The small book still manages to be stuffed with filling, but of the wrong kind: intricate and tedious academic harmonic analyses and self-proclaimed 'controversial' findings with regard to the various editions of the symphony. Thus, despite its short length, the book overstays its welcome by failing to balance its technical minutiae with any larger musical issues such as where the symphony could proceed after Wagner or the sublime solution of Bruckner.All-in-all, it resembles an unfocussed and undigested doctoral thesis (which doubtless was its unfortunate genesis). IMHO, one of the weaker titles in the otherwise fine Cambridge Press series, and a disappointment for those hoping for a long-overdue addition to the sadly empty bookshelf on this extraordinary composer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good work - but, oh, the price!?!
I've just borrowed this book from a university library.Professor Korstvedt has written a fine treatise on the Bruckner Eighth and is apparently planning a full-length biography on the composer and this is certainly something to look forward to, especially as it will, I think, be the first such work by an American author. This book undertakes a detailed analysis of the masterwork - its form and genesis and all of the relevant background material. But for a very thin hardcover volume with just over a hundred pages of text? You've got to be kidding me!Borrow this book from your library unless money is no object.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bruckner - symphony no.8
So far as we know, his 8th symphony is as famous as his 9th and/or 4th.

There is also a famous annecdote that all the students of Composer's were really impressed when he first played this symphony bypiano.

Composer explained that this symphony reflects the life of hisliving in the country.

But, this book (though it seems that the authorhad been tried his great effort to complete this) just shows the analysisof his 8th.

However, thank to author that the most difficult area ofdiscovering Bruckner's symphony at the most detailed situation.

All thelovers of 8th symphony are recommended to purchase this item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy.
Excellent deal.Haas Edition.Haas was Bruckner's editor.Bruckner 4 is the edition with Bruckner's autograph, not the confusing first edition.Bruckner 7 Adagio does not include cymbal and triangle. There is an explanation, including a picture of small part of facsimile of the addition to the 'original' score. For Bruckner, additions/amendments were aplenty so we really don't know what he wanted.Bruckner okayed many additions/diminutions because he didn't trust himself and he wanted to speed up the publishing process.

As for Dover, as usual, the print is very clear. Here there is lots of space to write and I like the number of bars per page, easy to follow phrasing/melodic line.Bar numbers and rehearsal numbers included.dictionary of German definitions included in the front.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dover Score of Bruckner 4&7 - Haas
I conducted 7th Symphony last week. Make sure you know the differences of Haas and Nowak. Even the Kalmus parts we had, supposed to be Haas, had some differences, most notably for example in the 1st movement bars 125-130, where Dover has many brass doublings and Kalmus only 2 horns and tuba only in bars 127-130. Also many tempo markings are missing in Dover, mostly Ruhig and belebend stuff.
If you correct these, you have a great book - big print, good paper and durable binding.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfectly accurate
this is really a great score. i use it to practice conducting and just to read along with while listening to these symphonies. the fiery rhythms and transcending beauty really come out when you read the score, even more so than when you listen to it without reading. you really notice things that you didn't even know were happening and it gives you a chance to critique the recording you are listening to according to what is written down. i highly recommend this for any clssical music lover, especially if you are, like me, an avid bruckner fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very accurate
I found this score very useful for a listening companion.Bruckner ROCKS! ... Read more

Product Description
This volume contains historical and analytical essays on Anton Bruckner and his music. For the past century the principal concerns of scholars of Bruckner's music have been his personal and musical relationship with Wagner, editorial problems in his scores, his enigmatic personality, and the assessment of his monumental late-nineteenth-century style. The studies in this volume consider these issues in the light of the latest research. Of interest to the lay person will be the discussions of the manner in which politics and special interests have affected the dissemination and perception of Bruckner's music, particularly in Nazi Germany. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I would highly recommend
I would like to start by responding to a comment in the first review. The "standard works" in many fields including Bruckner are not completely accurate and are in many cases simply outdated.New scholarship is much more self-critical and has found many flaws with earlier ideas and theories about Bruckner.I find the book to be a great resource and there's a reason that Jackson is co-author of the Bruckner article in the New Grove revised edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Disappointment
In view of the lack of modern books on this subject, and the failure to reprint the standard (and admirable) biographies, this monument of modern academic P & P (pedantry and pedagogy) is seriously disappointing. If you are seeking enlightenment about this motivation and methods of this most sublime of composers --- look elsewhere. This is a view through a microscope of the vast Brucknerian universe. You will, however, get a glimpse of current efforts to achieve tenure in academe. The standard works (in addition to Simpson, Schoenzeler, and Doernberg, perhaps the recent compilation by Stephen Johnson)remain essential --- so search the used book sites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bruckner Studies
It's wonderful and helpful to me.

Because, nowadays, I'm listening to his symphonies conducted by Georg Tintner.

Especially, chapter 4 of Part I is very impressive showing the annexation with NAZI.

But, I feel thatthis book is more general than I thought before I purchase it. Then, I cannot rate this book as 'Five Stars'.

Anyway, this book should be helpfulto who wants to know about the composer or the Man (Anton Bruckner). ... Read more

Product Description
One of the composer's finest works, composed in the late 1870s, but not performed until April of 1894. Featuring strikingly original harmonies, an extended structure and tonal range, this staple of the orchestral repertoire, like Bruckner's eight other symphonies, is a landmark of the Austro-Germanic symphonic tradition.

This is a revised and expanded edition of Robert Simpson's study, first published in 1967, of Bruckner's music. It includes additional material on the 3rd, 4th and 8th symphonies, whose original versions have only recently become available, and a new chapter on the String Quintet. Dr Simpson, himself a composer, is also the author of "Carl Nielsen, Symphonist" and the BBC music guide, "Beethoven Symphonies". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarifies this Enigmatic symphonist
Shame this is out of print. Simpson was annotator, promoter at The BBC. Heis a composer himself of large scale symphonies.

Bruckner has long beenan enigmatic creator, a late bloomer, spending years in pedagogicalsubjection of counterpoint. And his oefish, awkward demeanor gave a falseimpression to those who surrounded him, usually less talented unclairvoyantscholars who sought the necessity to revise his symphonies. Simpson herescours these giant symphonic boulders one by one, revealing where a greatrupture takes place, where Bruckner's symphonic vision begins to lookoutward, beginning with the Fifth Symphony. Although the D-minor Thirdbegins this transmogrification of vision. Bruckner looked well beyond theshadow of Beethoven, not utilizing that aesthetic pallette of pent upmomentums, and overwrought festering movements that get resolved. Insteadthe Bruckner movement in fact doesn't move, there is no forward movingimplication, we must simply withstand the overbearing presence of eachmovement in its own right, within its own oceanic spaces. Simpson is a goodwriter and brings some literary image to the outside gestural features, ashis machine-like repetitive conconctions, its moments which simply beginand end mindlessly at times,as the various variegated Scherzi. You need thescore I found to read Simpson for he does drag us through these symphoniesas a callable narrative, moment to moment, step by step,(not quite note fornote) inch by inch. This can get tedious, but that is what was the usualfare of musical analysis. Now hopefully there are those essays whichintroduce more social and political dimensions to the creation of art. ...
