Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "John Bull," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have John Bull in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with John Bull when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name John Bull, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
This book examines representations of Italy and Italians in the mid-nineteenth century and the uses made of them by English writers and readers. Italians were shown on the one hand as despised public nuisances, personified by organ grinders, but were also depicted in the most glamorous and fashionable settings such as opera houses. The range of meanings accorded to the signItalianwas vast and this is the source of the title metaphor: as John Bull played his Italian Snakes and Ladders, his self esteem and self-image waxed and waned correspondingly. In tracing this, the study examines how and why Italy operated as an important mechanism in the construction ofEnglishness , and the factors combining to make the mid-nineteenth century such a crucial period. The versions ofItaliannessin circulation established an iconography ofthe Italian , emblematic representations which could be repeated or alluded to as a taxonomy, building up a complex map of discourses about Italy. Sometimes these might conflict, or they may be traced as combining to create a field of prejudice as, for example, the construction of Italians as primitive, closer to nature, and more instinctive. Such a view could shade either into ideas of dirtiness, disreputability and evil or, conversely, into Italy as a site of unspoilt, naturalbliss. The study focuses particularly on the middle-class male reader and traces reasons for, and advantages conferred by, the circulation of such myths.Masculinity, nationality and class positioning can be seen as fragile walls to the edifice of self-esteem, supporting each other from similar foundations. The sources for analysis are chosen with this readership in mind; there is a wide range of texts from high and popular culture, including contemporary periodicals, and a key feature is the central use of visual texts in the argument, with over fifty illustrations. Italy, and Italians, can be seen to have held an important place in Victorian self-fashioning.'Annemarie McAllister s book on the representation of Italian culture in the nineteenth century draws on both a range of cultural theory and a wide diversity of sources to suggest some of the ways in which stereotypes and popular perceptions were constructed and used within Victorian society. Particularly compelling and original is her analysis of music as a site for building popular beliefs and assumptions about Italy and its people, but her study includes such topics as Italian history, gender, and sensuality as the focus for debate. McAllister s use of illustrations, and her detailed knowledge of the illustrated press, offer original and telling ways into the constructions of national identities so central to the Victorian way of thinking and believing.'Brian MaidmentProfessor of English, University of Salford. I am delighted to have the chance to comment on this book. I read the doctoral thesis on which it is based with great interest and enjoyment, and learnt enormously from it. As a historian of nineteenth-century Britain with a particular interest in the construction of identities (and as an Italophile) I found it highly rewarding. The topic is of intrinsic interest and considerable significance. The author identifies a key period in the emergence of the English idea(s) ofItaliannessand interrogates the topic through a variety of thoughtfully chosen case studies and via a rich array of appropriate primary sources. Most of the material was new to me and even topics that I felt some familiarity with, notably street music, were presented in a novel and rewarding way. I think the topic alone is worthy of a book-length study; matters Italian were at the heart of much political and cultural discussion in the mid-Victorian period and shaped both international political discourses and notions of British/English ident ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Longarm sorts out the difference between "Sleepers" and "Cross-ties".

Whew!! I finally finished this episode in a series I have become engrossed in. However;this saga, which was published back in July 1995 ,is not what would have attracted me to this great action packed series.
Here we see Longarm assigned a routine task of going to an Old West Mining town of Bull Run,Colorado to escort an small time thief back to Denver for trial.
What seemed like an insignificent job turned into being a tedious ,convoluted, mystery novel;lacking just about every element of what makes a good Western. It just drags on and on with people getting shot at and killed for no apparent reasons,no western conversation,no good character developments ,no western scenes, and little action. It keeps introducing new people getting done in,and with little clues of why.It is just a big mystery why all this is happening and reading it is pure drudgery. In the end ,when one expects some real Old West action,it spends page after page giving clues and motives leading in circles and explanations of what and why things happened.
I guess if mystery novels is your forte;you may like this sort of thing ;but it's not the type of excitement we usually look forward to and get in this series.
About the only thing I found interesting was why the track size was wider with the American Railroads and they used "Cross-ties" while the British called theirs Railways and used "Sleepers".I guess the fact that our hero got so bored with it all;and ended up in the school library looking for answers ,tells you something about this episode.
Then again ,we learned what a "Doxie" is. Maybe that's your reward for wading through this mystery. ... Read more
