Excerpt: Harisu (Hangul: ; Chinese: ) is the stage name of Lee Kyung-eun (born February 17, 1975), a transsexual pop singer, model and actress from South Korea. Born biologically male, Harisu identified as female from early childhood, and underwent sex reassignment surgery in the 1990s. She is noted for being South Korea's first transgender entertainer, and in 2002 became only the second person in Korea to legally change their gender. Her stage name is an adaptation of the English phrase "hot issue". Harisu first gained public attention in 2001, after appearing in a television commercial for DoDo cosmetics. The commercial was a big success and ended up launching her career, allowing her to branch out into other fields such as music and acting. So far she has recorded five Korean musical albums, switching genres between techno and R ... Read more

Product Description
Tuning In: Microtonality, Alternate Scales And Temperaments For Electronic Musical Instruments. This is the first book available describing the use of microtonality with today's electronic musical instruments. It explores the notes 'in the cracks,' discusses uses of alternate tunings, and reveals the history of scales throughout the world. Tuning In presents tuning data for various Western, ethnic, and other alternate scales and also explains how to use microtonality on synthesizers such as the DX7II, TX81Z, Prophet 5, and any computer with an internal sound generator. This book also shows how to use alternate tunings in performance and studio applications such as sequencing and multitrack recording. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but beware the tables
This book is a great introduction to scales and temperaments for the synthesist. But beware the tables of intervals in cents - there are quite a few entries which are very inaccurate. This applies particularly to the tables for Werckmeister III and the Vallotti-Young temperament. My recommendation to the author is to bring out a second corrected edition, also updating the information on microtonal capabilities of synthesizers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to microtonal music and consonance theory.
A wealth of microtonal music theory is presented in a friendly and easy to understand format. There are sections on acoustics, psycoacoustics, scale theory, scale history, and a list of synthesyzers and their microtonal capabilities.Over 20 different scales are spelled out in cents, ratios, and key mappings for synthesyzers. You don't have to be an electronic musician to benefit from this book. It's also a perfect introduction to Helmholtz's "On the Sensations of Tone".120 pages. ... Excerpt: Switched-On Bach is a musical album by Walter Carlos (later Wendy Carlos) and Benjamin Folkman, produced by Carlos and Rachel Elkind and released in 1968 by Columbia Masterworks Records. It played a key role in popularising classical music performed on electronic synthesizers, which had until then been relegated to experimental and "pop" music. This fostered a significant increase in interest in electronically-rendered music in general, and the Moog synthesizer in particular. Switched-On Bach was one of the first classical albums to sell 500,000 copies, and go platinum (Van Cliburn's recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 went triple-platinum in 1958). Entering Billboard's pop Top 40 charts on March 1, 1969, it climbed quickly to the Top 10; it stayed in the Top 40 for 17 weeks, and in the Top 200 for more than a year. In the 1970 Grammy awards, the album took three prizes: Best Classical Album, Best Classical Music Performance, Instrumental Soloist(s) (With or Without Orchestra) and Best Engineered Classical Recording. The album consists of a selection of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed on a Moog Modular synthesizer system, one of which can be seen at the back of the room on the album cover. "Switched-On Bach," or "S-OB" as Carlos referred to it, was recorded on a custom-built 8 track recorder (constructed by Carlos from superseded Ampex components), using numerous takes and overdubs. This was long before the days of MIDI sequencers or polyphonic keyboards. Recording the album was a tedious and time-co...http://booksllc.net/?id=515246 ... Read more

Excerpt: Kristin Hersh (born August 7, 1966) is an American singer/songwriter who performs solo acoustic concerts; she also has performed as lead singer and guitarist for alternative rock group Throwing Muses and currently leads the hardcore punk-influenced power trio 50 Foot Wave. Born in Atlanta as Martha Kristin Hersh, she was raised in Newport, Rhode Island. She learned guitar at age nine from her father, and started writing songs soon after. As a teenager, she formed Throwing Muses in the early 1980s with stepsister Tanya Donelly and other high school friends. Hersh began singing and writing most of Throwing Muses' songs in changing tempos, with Donelly also singing and writing some of the songs. The group was signed by the British 4AD Records label in 1986 and, after one album, signed a U.S. deal with Sire/Reprise Records in 1987. They began touring around the U.S. and Europe while recording critically-acclaimed rock albums, with Hersh writing most of the songs. Hersh has listed among her early musical influences The Raincoats, Talking Heads, Violent Femmes, Meat Puppets, Dead Kennedys, Hüsker Dü, Velvet Underground, R.E.M., and X. She has said her parents' albums by Patti Smith, the Carter Family, Stevie Wonder, Robert Johnson, Talking Heads, The Clash, Steve Miller, The Beatles, Philip ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=845609 ... Excerpt: Charles Edward Ives (October 20, 1874 May 19, 1954) was an American modernist composer. He is widely regarded as one of the first American composers of international significance. Ives' music was largely ignored during his life, and many of his works went unperformed for many years. Over time, Ives came to be regarded as an "American Original". Ives combined the American popular and church-music traditions of his youth with European art music, and was among the first composers to engage in a systematic program of experimental music, with musical techniques including polytonality, polyrhythm, tone clusters, aleatoric elements, and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=66283 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great
I recieved my order in a well timed fashion and I am very happy with the product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn....She was human after all!
I'd been looking for this issue for some time and managed to finally get it. The story in it from her former maid Lena Pepitone was interesting to read but i found that after trusting someone with your day to day life, as much as Marilyn had to deal with was a bit off putting, simply due to the fact that her trust was betraed by this woman (as well as so many others that look to make a fast buck of her name!).
The purpose of getting this was to add it to my growing Monroe collection but reading it did upset me none thee less. I can imagine how much more intrusive and critical the book must be and im glad that i resisted getting it especially after reading the except in Playboy. However for any Monroe collector it is a nice peice to have and what a time capsle as well. ... Read more

From the supplier: The Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) is an agreement that would integrated the economies of all the counties of the continent, except Cuba, by the year 2005. However, economic activists warned that the formation of FTAA is just a ploy by the US to reassert its dominant position in the region which it considers as its own market. An interview with Carlo Beas Torres, director of the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus, is presented.

Excerpt: Gregory "Greg" Efthimios Louganis (born January 29, 1960) is an American Olympic diver and author. He is best known for winning back-to-back Olympic titles in both the 3m and 10m diving events. He received the James E. Sullivan Award from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1984 as the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. Louganis is of Samoan/Swedish descent. Two years later, with Dibiasi retired, Louganis won his first world title in the same event. In 1978, he accepted a diving scholarship to the University of Miami where he studied theater, but in 1981 transferred to the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Louganis was a favorite for two golds in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, but an American boycott of the games prevented him from participating. Louganis won two world diving titles in 1982. In the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, with record scores and leads over his opponents, Louganis won gold medals in both the springboard and tower diving events. After winning two more world championship titles in 1986, he repeated his 1984 feat in the 1988 Seoul Olympics...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=66270 ... Read more
