Product Description

Solving modern biological problems requires advanced informatics and computational methods. Key techniques include database management, data modeling, pattern recognition, data mining, query processing and visualization of biological data. Until very recently, virtually all public databases were simply large flat files stored in simple format. Navigating among databases required expert knowledge and considerable patience. The huge quantities of biological data and escalating demands of modern biological research increasingly require the sophistication and power of information technology tools. More specifically, optimal use of these tools requires proximity information ? knowing which data points are in the surrounding area of others.

In this book we will present methodologies and data structures for gathering high-quality approximations of biological information, and will use these information technologies as the foundation to develop practical tools for clustering and visualization in biological data mining and database management.

Product Description

This book addresses the algorithm analysis and VLSI architecture of video encoders, especially for high definition and scalable video coder. The three design challenges and related system issues of memory bandwidth (including system memory and internal memory), hardware area, and power consumption (required operating frequency) are all discussed.  With the high definition encoder, the authors focus on algorithm modification and design parallelism to provide high processing capability for the video encoder. Several corresponding hardware schedules are also included to cooperate with proposed architecture. For scalable video coding, the emphasis is placed not only on video algorithms, but also on hardware performance. The algorithm modification, data reuse schemes from frame-level to candidates-level, and architecture design contribute in the developing of three scalabilities and first MCTF hardware design.  Finally, the first SVC encoder chip for HDTV1080p is presented and all above design issues are considered together.

Product Description
This book summarizes two significant tendencies for application of conservation laws and energy release rates. The first is to establish a bridge between some famous invariant integrals and microcrack damage descriptions. The second is the direct extension from the understandings established in Fracture Mechanics for conventional materials to those for functional materials. In the first point it discusses the vanishing nature for both components of the Jk-integral vector when the closed contour encloses all discontinuities completely. Both mathematical manipulations and numerical examinations are given. Thus the M-integral and the L-integral are independent of coordinate shifts and, more significantly, the M-integral presents a new description for the damage level of a microcracking brittle solid. In the second point it discusses the direct extension from the basic understandings established in Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics to those for functional materials, e.g., piezoelectric ceramics. Owing to the mechanical and electric coupling, some new insights of energy release rates are discussed in detail. ... Read more

The purposes of this study were to understand ESL (English as a Second Language) students? learning motivations and learning strategies in the West North Central division of the United States. This study concluded that the ESL students tend to be more instrumentally motivated than integratively motivated when learning English, and female students use strategies more frequently than male students when learning English. The researcher suggests that since ESL students? learning motivations and strategies are different, ESL instructors should understand more about students? motivations and strategies in order to vary their teaching styles to achieve better results in language learning. ... Excerpt: Chen Yi (Chinese: ; pinyin: Chén Yí; Wade-Giles: Ch'en I; courtesy names Gongxia () and later Gongqia (), sobriquet Tuisu (); 1883 - June 18, 1950) was the Chief Executive and Garrison Commander () of Taiwan after it was surrendered by Japan to the Republic of China, which acted on behalf of the Allied Powers, in 1945. His infamous mishandling of the tension between Taiwanese locals and Mainlanders precipitated the February 28 Incident, and he was later dismissed and executed for disloyalty (though for reasons unrelated to his tenure in Taiwan). Chen was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. After studying at Qiushi Academy (now Zhejiang University), in 1902 he went to a military academy in Japan for seven years . He joined Guangfuhui while in Japan. He returned to Japan in 1917 to study in a military university for three years, then resided in Shanghai. He is said to have been a "Japanophile." He was the first senator () and governor of Zhejiang (since October 1925). Chen was also the commander of the 19th Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army (). After 1927, he worked in the Military Affairs Department (), then as the chairman of Fujian in 1933, and Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan. Chen served as governor of Fujian province for eight years, beginning in 1934. His experience in Fujian, the province immediately across the straits from Taiwan and the source of a larger percentage of Taiwan's population, was clearly a factor in Chen's selection to take contro... Excerpt: Hou Jing (Chinese: ; pinyin: Hóu Jng) (died 552), courtesy name Wanjing (), was a general for the Chinese states Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, and Liang Dynasty, and briefly, after controlling the Liang imperial regime for several years, usurped the Liang throne, establishing a state of Han. He was soon defeated by the Liang prince Xiao Yi the Prince of Xiandong, and he was killed by his own associates while in flight. He was one of the reviled figures in Chinese history, known for his exceeding cruelty to enemies and civilians. It is not known when Hou Jing was born, but it was known that he was from Huaishuo Garrison () -- one of the garrisons that Northern Wei established on the northern border to defend against Rouran attacks. He appeared to be ethnically Han, but the matter of his ethnicity is not conclusive. When he was young, he was one of a group of friends who associated with Gao Huan, who often spent time in the countryside, seeking to correct injustice. During the reign of Emperor Xiaoming, Northern Wei plunged into a state of civil war, with much of the state overrun by agrarian rebellions. Around this time, Hou joined the army of the Northern Wei general Erzhu Rong, and initially, he learned tactics from Erzhu's lieutenant Murong Shaozong (), but soon, Murong found it necessary to consult Hou for his opinion on tactical matters. After Erzhu largely put down the rebellions, Hou was made the governor of Ding Province (, roughly modern Baoding, Hebei). After Erzhu was killed by Emperor Xiaozhuang in 530, and Emperor Xiaozhuang was in turn killed by Erzhu's relatives, members of the Erzhu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7579158 ... Read more

Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Hans Joachim Morgenthau (February 17, 1904 - July 19, 1980) was one of the leading twentieth-century figures in the study of international politics. He made landmark contributions to international-relations theory and the study of international law, and his Politics Among Nations, first published in 1948, went through many editions and was for decades the most-used textbook in its field in U.S. universities. In addition, Morgenthau wrote widely about international politics and U.S. foreign policy for general-circulation journals such as The New Leader, Commentary, Worldview, and The New Republic. He knew and corresponded with many of the leading intellectuals and writers of his era, such as Reinhold Neibuhr, George F. Kennan, and Hannah Arendt. At one point in the early Cold War, Morgenthau was a consultant to the U.S. State Department when Kennan headed its Policy Planning Staff. For most of his career, however, Morgenthau was an academic critic of U.S. foreign policy rather than a formulator of it. Indeed, he pubblicly opposed American involvement in Vietnam. Morgenthau was born in a Jewish family in Coburg, Germany, and educated at the universities of Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. He taught and practiced law in Frankfurt before emigrating to the United States in 1937, after several interim years in Switzerland and Spain. Morgenthau taught for many years at the University of Chicago, and at the end of his career he taught at the New School for Social Research and the City University of New York. Hans Morgenthau is considered one of the "founding fathers" of the realist school in the 20th century. This school of thought holds that nation-states are the main actors in international relations, and that the main concern of the field is the study of power. Morgenthau emphasized the importance of "the national interest," and in Politics Among Nations he wrote that "the main signpost that h...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Ma Sicong (Chinese: ; pinyin: M Scng; Wade-Giles: Ma Szu-ts'ung; May 7, 1912 May 20, 1987) was a Chinese violinist and composer. He was referred to in China as "The King of violinists." His Nostalgia () for violin, composed in 1937 as part of the Inner Mongolia Suite (), was considered one of the most favorite pieces of 20th century China. During his youth, Ma went to Paris to study music, and was then admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris, majoring in violin. In early 1932, Ma returned to China, and got married in the same year. In the following period he composed many renowned pieces such as Lullaby, Inner Mongolia suite, Tibet tone poem (), and Madrigal (). Ma was appointed president of the newly established Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing by the Central government Politburo of the People's Republic of China in December 1949. When the Cultural Revolution broke out in June 1966, Ma became a target of the Red Guards and so-called revolutionaries. In the night of January 15, 1967, Ma and his family managed to escape to Hong Kong, and fled to the United States with escorts provided by the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong. In May, 1967, a special file was opened to investigate the circumstances of Ma's escape, under the leadership of Kang Sheng (), head of the Central Investigation Agency, and Xie Fuzhi (), the Minister of Public Security. Excerpt: Ma Su (190 228) was a military strategist for the Kingdom of Shu during the Three Kingdoms era of China. He was the younger brother of Shu advisor, Ma Liang. Ma Su had extraordinary talents in military stratagems and was admired by the Prime Minister of Shu, Zhuge Liang. However, a tactical blunder by Ma Su at the Battle of Jieting resulted in Shu being dealt a huge defeat by Zhang He, a general of the Kingdom of Wei. Much dramatization shrouds the death of Ma Su. In the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms as well as the Peking Opera Loss of Jieting, Ma Su was said to have been beheaded at the order of Zhuge Liang. However, according to biographies of Ma Su and his close friend Xiang Lang () in the Records of Three Kingdoms, Ma Su had actually attempted to escape after the defeat at Jieting but was captured. He eventually died of sickness in jail before the ordered execution could be carried out. A local of Yicheng (), Ma Su was one of the five brothers in the family, all of whom were renowned for their intellects, though Ma Su's elder brother Ma Liang was deemed to be the most talented among them all. Together with Ma Liang, Ma Su began his service under Liu Bei around 205 AD, while the later founder of the Kingdom of Shu was still a guest of Liu Biao in Jingzhou (, present day Hubei and Hunan). Since the start, Liu Bei's chief advisor Zhuge Liang had been impressed by Ma Su's expansive knowledge in military strategies. Excerpt: Ruan Lingyu (Chinese: ; pinyin: Run Língyù; April 26, 1910 March 8, 1935), born Ruan Fenggen (), was a Chinese silent film actress. One of the most prominent Chinese film stars of the 1930s, her tragic death at the age of 24 led her to become an icon of Chinese cinema. Born in Shanghai in 1910, Ruan made her first film at the age of 16 for the then prominent Mingxing Film Studio. She was brought up by her mother who worked as a house maid to provide for her. Her first big break came in Spring Dream of an Old Capital ( or Reminiscences of Beijing, 1930). A massive hit, it was her first major work after signing for the newly-formed Lianhua Studio. Later that year, Ruan made her penultimate film, New Women (), with director Cai Chusheng, where she played an educated Shanghai woman forced to death by an unfeeling society. A final film, National Customs () was released shortly after her death. Following the completion of New Women, Ruan... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=407928 ... Read more
