Product Description
Although more and more students have the test scores and transcripts to get into college, far too many are struggling once they get there. These students are surprised to find that college coursework demands so much more of them than high school. For the first time, they are asked to think deeply, write extensively, document assertions, solve non-routine problems, apply concepts, and accept unvarnished critiques of their work. College Knowledge confronts this problem by looking at the disconnect between what high schools do and what colleges expect and proposes a solution by identifying what students need to know and be able to do in order to succeed.

The book is based on an extensive three-year project sponsored by the Association of American Universities in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts. This landmark research identified what it takes to succeed in entry-level university courses. Based on the project's findings - and interviews with students, faculty, and staff - this groundbreaking book delineates the cognitive skills and subject area knowledge that college-bound students need to master in order to succeed in today's colleges and universities. These Standards for Success cover the major subject areas of English, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, second languages, and the arts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Advice
Valuable advice clearly presented. A fine blueprint for assessing your child's school and their preparation for a successful college application and their future success in college. HIGHLY recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Sensible
Because I work with underserved students and their college counselors, I bought this book to do research. It's admirably organized and clear, avoiding jargon-laden edu-speak in favor of level-headed observations about how to prepare students for college. The first part was most relevant for me as a college counselor, but the recommendations regarding curriculum sequences and preparation are excellent. A good book for school and department heads as they review their own curricula, especially if they want to ensure a good transition to college for their graduates.

4-0 out of 5 stars College Knowledge
This was an interesting book & it arrived quickly! It reads fairly easily and is chock full of important information for parents, teachers and guidance counsellors!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Teachers and to the College Bound
This book really has two goals. It's original and main intent is aimed at high school teachers who are preparing students for college. In this vein it addresses what should be tought to students and how they should be taught.

The second goal is how to take whatever high school education a young person has and from this foundation prepare the student for what college is going to be like.

Unfortunately the taking of the college preparatory curriculum in most high schools does a fairly poor job of actually preparing students for surviving in the college environment. Perhaps the knowledge the student has in math, english, or whatever is adequate. But there is still the lack of involvement on the teachers part, particularly in the large survey type classes of a hundred plus students with a TA doing the teaching. Combine this with the faster pace, the increased requirements for homework, and the outside influences away from home and the potential is there for significant problems.

This book is a more basic guide than many of the college review type books that merely list some attributes of dozens of colleges. This is a guide on how to succeed rather than how to pick a college. ... Read more

From the supplier: Reform in the K-12 system makes little mention of higher education. Four factors hindering higher education's interest in reform are proffered. The Proficiency-based Admission Standards System of Oregon offers an example of higher education's participation in high school reform.

Characterization the Cause(s) of Hypoxia. The physical, biological and chemical processes that affect the development, persistence and extent of hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Characterization of Nutrient Fate, Transport and Sources. Nutrient loadings, fate, transport and sources in the Mississippi River that impact Gulf Hypoxia.

Scientific Basis for Goals and Management Options. The scientific basis for, and recommended revisions to, the goals proposed in the Action Plan; and the scientific basis for the efficacy of recommended management actions to reduce nutrient flux from point and nonpoint sources.

Product Description
The dramatic story of the Cherokee people has long captivated appreciators of American history. In CHEROKEE, the history and culture of one of the most resilient original peoples of the United States is brought to life through spectacular photography and vivid prose.

The Cherokees' poignant story is one that is difficult to believe: from their shameful treatment at the hands of the Colonial settlers, to their "Removal" west over the Trail of Tears in the 1800s, to their resurgence and current prosperity as a distinct nation. Presented in this elegant volume, the tale of the Cherokees' courage and endurance is at once remarkable, stirring, and enlightening.

Author Robert J. Conley recounts the history and struggle of the Cherokee and offers a window into today's Cherokee culture in moving detail. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chadwick Smith provides an eloquent introduction to the book. The stunning photography of David G. Fitzgerald portrays the land and lifeways of these proud people, including many powerful portraits of contemporary individuals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enterprise Experiment makes it worth it.
Okay, basically this book contains a lot of aweful Trek, the Tiptons and other just can't seem to write it worth a damn. What makes this book worth it is the Enterprise Experiement books, written by Fontana and Chester. These two really seem to "get" what made classic Trek work and the characterizations are spot on.D.C. Fontana wrote a many of the original series scripts anyway, so she should know.So bottom line, if you can't get The Enterprise Experiment trade paper, or the original comics themselves then you can pick this up here. But make no mistake, the other stories are just horrid, as IDW has often proven they just don't know much about Trek.Even further evidence of this would be their stupid upcoming idea to blend the zombie genre into Trek and their other licenses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wide and fun variety of stories
Reviews for the other Star Trek Omnibus collections have not been (ahem) stellar, but this is an excellent collection, well worth the low price of owning it. From the awesome artwork on the front and back covers, to the stories inside, there's enough here to delight any Star Trek fan, and any comicbook fan.

Leading off the volume is "Klingons: Blood Will Tell," written by the Tipton brothers, with art by David Messina. This is a massive and amazing story, looking from the Klingons' perspective on all of the Klingon/Human encounters portrayed in the Original Series television show. The art is incredible, and the story gives new insight into the motivations of the Klingon commanders we think we know so well.

Next is "Star Trek: Year Four," a sequence of one-shot episodes of mixed quality. Some of them feature the exquisite art of Gordon Purcell, Trek artist extraordinaire, while others...don't. The stories are okay, but nothing to write home about. One interesting tale involves the crew becoming the cast of an interstellar reality show! Yeah, I know.

These are followed by four "Alien Spotlight" stories, on the Vulcans, the Gorn, the Orions, and the Romulans. These are by different writer/artist teams (including legend of comicbook art, John Byrne) and they are uniformly awesome. Adventures span from the days of Christopher Pike, all the way to Captain Terrell on the Reliant, and they are rollicking good fun.

The book closes with "The Enterprise Experiment," which is a solid and enjoyable tale of the Enterprise crew tracking down a mystery that involves the Organians and the Preservers, two key races from the Original Series. The art is excellent, and the story is engaging, as the crew races against time to keep the Klingons from acquiring the technology of the Preservers.

A somewhat mixed bag, but the great far outweighs the good or the weak. Highly recommended. ... Read more
