5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove ofWonderful Music
This volume is a bargain at any price, and at this price, it is an exceptional find.It contains every sonata Corelli wrote (Opus 1-5), giving anyone interested in playing Baroque chamber music a lifetime's worth of beautiful compositions to explore. The format is large and the music itself is clearly printed and extremely readable.Though it is fully bound, it easily opens completely, allowing perfect performance copies to be made.Even if you don't think you will ever play more than a handful of the sonatas, the total collection is a pleasure to have in hand to follow along while listening to Corelli's work.I won't take the time here to sing the many praises of Corelli's music, but suffice it to say, his trio and solo sonatas are the standard by which all Baroque sonatas are measured.

5-0 out of 5 stars the orpheus of the violin
extremely good edition of these classic works.the violin sonatas include not only the straightforward version of the first print (Jan 1, 1700) but the elaborate ornaments included in later publications "as Corelli plays them" -- a fascinating light on what people actually did with this music.every violinist should play these -- contemporaries called them "the very staff of life." ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The first full-length study for forty years, Arcangelo Corelli offers a much needed reassessment of the seminal composer's life and works. His current historical perspective is still largely conditioned by the opinions of Burney and Hawkins in the late 18th century who saw him as the consolidator of past trends rather than an instigator--a view fully endorsed in the two biographies of the present century. Neither of these writers was truly in a position to make such judgements if only because neither was aware of the contributions of the Roman School to which Corelli emphatically affirmed his allegiance. Extensive archival research over recent years now dispels much of the anecdote and hearsay accumulated over the centuries and makes possible a more balanced evaluation of Corelli's true status in the development of the prime instrumental genres, accounting for his phenomenal success both during his lifetime and in the creation of musical canon in the decades after his death. ... Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included.

Excerpt: Johann Sebastian Bach (German pronunciation: or ) (31 March 1685 28 July 1750) (often referred to simply as Bach) was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose ecclesiastical and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he did not introduce new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Partitas, The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Mass in B Minor, the St Matthew Passion, the St John Passion, the Magnificat, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue, the English and French Suites, the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, the Cello Suites, more than 200 surviving cantatas, and a similar number of organ works, including the celebrated Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor.
