Editorial Review

Book Description
Although born Giuseppe Guttovergi to a poor, immigrant Italian family, it was as Paul Creston that Giuseppe rose to prominence, becoming one of the most widely performed American composers. Rhythm was a continued subject of research for this composer, and by 1945 he had established a terminology of rhythmic structures, which he observed both in his music and the music of other composers, even writing two books on the subject. This volume presents for the first time a complete descriptive account of the life of the composer, as well as access to currently available materials by and about him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Rhythm
"Rational Metric Notation" was written toward the end of Paul Creston's life. It is an eccentric book with distracting deliberate misspellings and not really representative of Paul Creston'sthought--something of an embarrassment actually. On the other hand,"Principles of Rhythm" is a vital book no musician shouldoverlook. Read Paul Creston's "Principles of Rhythm"; listen tohis music whenever you get the chance; and forgive him "RationalMetric Notation."

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Creston deserves at least this
This is a published master's degree (I think) thesis. Its prose is rather plodding, I'm sorry to say, but its subject is certainly worth treating. It's a very sad thing that the two Paul Creston books referred to above,"Principles of Rhythm" and "Rational Metric Notation"are now unavailable. I've never had a chance to look at "RationalMetric Notation", but in my opinion "Principles of Rhythm"is one the most important books about music ever published and the onlylogical exposition of rhythm ever published. (By the bye, I'm also ratherfond of "Pentatonic Scales for the Jazz-Rock Keyboardist" by JeffBurns, very much still available.) To sum up, I give "PaulCreston" five stars just for existing. ...
