an intermediate Czerny
Got a hankering to start working through Czerny?

This is an intermediate text.If it's too daunting, you should start with this one:Preliminary School of Dexterity, Op. 636, as edited by Willard Palmer and published by Alfred.It's about as low as you can go and still be playing authentic Czerny that hasn't been watered down.I don't know why Amazon doesn't have a picture of it:it's certainly not rare or out of print.

From there I would progress to this one, the "Practical Method for Beginners on the Piano," which, despite its title, is more advanced (and thicker) than this.

Only after finishing that should you go for the mother lode:The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete (Alfred Masterwork Edition).

All of these Alfred editions are the best:carefully edited and handsomely presented.

They all consist of square melodies in the binary form, with the same chords in the same places, and with the same rink-chink harmonic treatment.Counterpoint, what's that?

Play these with relaxed, light fingers and hands
These are good exercises for lightness and fastness of the fingers; play them with very light, very relaxed hands, relaxed fingers and arms, otherwise it will be very taxing to achieve "velocity" and you will eventually strain yourself.Make sure you do not feel any tension doing these, otherwise, consciously relax the hands.Most of these are like actual pieces, though they are usually just played as exercises.I had done the Hanon and Cramer exercises as a child; they served their purpose.These are more melodically interesting, but more difficult to just sit down and sight-read at tempo.I have to really work at these.

Exceptional exercises for the advancing student
As a casual piano student thirty years ago, I stumbled on a School of Velocity collection at a rummage sale.Curious as to who would have the gumption to come up with such a great title (wouldn't it be a fabbo name for a band?), I paid up, took the tattered book home, tried out the first exercise...and INSTANTLY felt a difference.I'm so serious about this bold statement that I'll say it again: I INSTANTLY felt a difference--in my speed, dexterity, expression, the whole nine yards.

"Oh, sure", you scoff."Like some ancient piano composer/teacher's little tunes are gonna improve MY bumpus fingers!"Yes, my friend, they will.Why?First and foremost, because they're great tunes.The melodies drag you in and make practicing fun.When was the last time you had fun playing Hanon?

These pieces fly all over the keyboard, and as you get better, you'll speed up too. They're big and epic, so let's face it--you'll feel much cooler than you probably are!And the technique--you'll learn to roll your hands, cross over easily, finger like a pro.They're challenging, too--I've not yet finished the book. If you're a serious, intermediate-level piano student, do yourself a favor and buy Czerny's classic "School of Velocity" collection.You won't regret it.

A must-have!
I've been playing the piano for 10 years but I've never had any technical training. This book helps me break bad habits and play with great technical skill. I still have to practice everyday but I feel like I'm getting better each session. From what I understand, this is sort of a must-have for any true piano player. The etudes become more and more difficult as you advance and it really challenges me and pushes me to be better. Buy it!

nice, but I like Burgmuller a little better
As the title indicates, these pieces are indeed progressive.The C major tonality wears somewhat tiresome in the first pages, but the last pages contain pieces written in difficult keys.

Much of the work is written according to the usual cliches found in intermediate piano solos, but much of it is original and ingenious also.The harmony grows somewhat more pungent in the second half.I counted 1 Phrygian cadence, 1 Italian sixth, 2 German sixths, and 3 Neopolitan sixths.

You will certainly get your money's worth in terms of quantity.A complete rendition of this book lasts about 2 hours.

Great Czerny Finger Exercise!
Czerny was simple yet complex, in his cute little etudes, everyone know that. This opus 740 is really lovely. I heard a recording of the entire book, all the etudes, and it was just beautiful. I thought, Not only Chopin's famous etudes are gorgeous - this one, too! So, I decided to prcatice them. I love it! It's a great exercise for the finges and hands.
