Author to Law A-Z
I found Author to Law to be highly informative and full of take-away.This book is a must-read for any author, from the novice to accomplished. I initially wanted more information about copyright laws but discovered there were concessions to negotiate along with royalty rates I hadn't even considered.I wish I had read this before I signed my contract. Now I feel I have tools to work with. And this book is in my toolbelt.

For Anyone in Publishing to Increase Your Knowledge about the Law
You've finally received a book contract. Yeah! Congratulations and what excitement. Yet when you study the contract it is 15 or 16 pages full of legalese that you can't understand. What do you do? Sign it?

Here's a great tool to increase your understanding of the issues related to the legalese of contracts. It's not black and white but often in between and the words on the page make a huge difference. It's the author's responsibility to understand these words.

I love what these authors wrote in the final paragraph of their section on how to use the book: "Remember that no book can be a substitute for the advice of a good lawyer. This book should've been called Entertainment & Media Law A to Z.It is both informative and extremely thorough in its description of the legal and business affairs of the publishing industry.It also provides basic information on recording industry practices as well as copyright & trademark law. This book does a terrific job of informing authors of many valuable resources that exist to assist them.As an attorney, I was impressed with the case law cited by the author.However, this book is written in plain English, and written in a way that people of all backgrounds could easily understand.I would say, to aspiring authors or literary agents alike, this book is a must have.

Bible
This book has become a primary reference and is much referred in scientific papers. The chapters by different authors broadly discuss the topic old-growth. My favorite chapters were "A Native American Perspective" and the regional chapters. The regional chapters have been written from different perspectives according to writers' speciality: Chapter 10 (Southern New England, New York and Pennsylvania) concentrates on early old-growth studies and old-growth areas; chapters 11 (Great Lakes) and 12 (Central Mesophytic Forests) discuss disturbance types and succession; 13 (oak and oak-hickory forests) discuss old-growth definitions applicable to the oak and oak-hickory forests; 14 (Southeastern Wetlands) has been written from the personal perspective of a conservationist; 15 (Longleaf Pine Forests) describes fire interactions of the original, now almost totally disappeared, Pinus palustris forests, but also includes a table of all known old-growth areas. Different authors also define the term "old-growth" differently. This "non-homogenousness" is not a downside but makes the book still richer.

There are some minor weaknesses. Chapter "Extent and Location" could be more precise. Now it often mentions only "10,000 acre XXXXX State Forest includes 2,000 acres of old-growth" without telling where the old-growth exactly is. Or still better, there could be a chapter "Visiting Eastern Old-Growth Forests". I consider the visitor perspective an important point, and the book also emphasize spiritual values of old-growth. For the Northeast there is "The Sierra Club Guide to the Ancient Forests of the Northeast" by Kershner & Leverett but for many other regions there are no guide books. A few color pictures of the most important parks would be nice. For the readers not familiar with the eastern North American flora, there should be a table of common and scientific names at the end of the book, as all the writers do not mention scientific names.

I recommend this book to all forest lovers regardless of home country.

This book is very ensightful and full of good advice for our young african american brothers.I found it to be extremely eye opening for my 17 year old, who is about to embark on the real world upon graduation.This book is a vehicle to use for a reality check.As parents we can tell our children things and they feel we are just being parents or over protective, but to see it in writing from older men is confirmation.This book is a great gift to any young man especially if he is about to leave home for the first time.

WOW, this book is good...and I'm not Black!
I bought this book to be passed around the Adolescent crisis center where I work. It's an INSTANT hit, with guys even coming up to me to remark, "this book is cool!" It's easy-to-read, with large text and each page dedicated to a single idea. The advice is honorable and the writing style is classy. The authors aren't shy about any subject, and they give advice to young men that is genuinely significant. It takes its readers seriously, doesn't "preach" or come off like a scold-in-disguise. Now to find a corresponding book for females...

A great read if you want to help your adolescent son grow.
I purchased the book for my adolescent son to read. My hope was that he might find some helpful hints on how to deal with his everyday life situations.What I found was an opportunity to communicate with him in away that had here-to-fore been impossible.We began to really talk to eachother about life and death, about different situations he would face in theworld, in this country, in the neighborhood and in the home.We talkedabout how his responses to them would determine the kind of man he wouldbecome, the kind of life he would live.The book poses many real lifesituations that young Black men are faced with. TERRORISM AFLOAT
Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System by Anthony M. Davis (USCG Ret.) gives some good basic insight to the lay reader as to the extensive responsibilities of the USCG, and the astronomical job they have of protecting the coast lines, and various water ways that are incumbent upon safety and economic trade within this country.

Mr. Davis basically gives the reader a "thumb-nail' sketch of various scenarios regarding possible terrorist/ criminal attacks on various vessels and the entire maritime infrastructure.Many of these scenarios are built upon certain historical catastrophes and events that helped to lay the present foundations for possible future responses to assaults on the maritime system.

The book reads more like a specialized text for a USGC or, Law enforcement related seminar rather than the general public.Much of the information within this book is of a very basic nature.I'm sure the author did not want to give out "too much specialized information" on this topic for obvious reasons, especially after 911.

However,Mr. Davis gives enough information for the reader to at least, appreciate the overall complexity of this particular industry and its massive problems looming in the dark holds of these potential floating steel bombs.

His writing technique is more class-room orientated than I would have liked, but the subject matter and potential repercussions of terrorism in the maritime transportation system is enough to... leave the reader sitting in a cold sweat.

Despite the author's Federal Bureaucratic make up ( I too was one), and writing style...he has none the less, exposed our real "Achilles heel." If something is not done to help protect this vital area then, we are flirting with an ultimate disaster that may just totally whitewash the 911 attacks by comparison!

Understand How Our Country is At Risk & Being Protected
My wife suggested I read this book. I am glad I did. So much goes into understanding how our country is protected and needs to be protected.

The author is very knowledgeable as he was a former maritime investigator and a prior maritime intelligence officer. I trust what he says in his book.

This book helped me understand exactly what we are up against when it comes to criminals and terrorists.

I highly recommend this book to people so they can understand what is all involved in protecting our country.

Fascinating
They say that farewarned is forearmed, and if that's the case, then Anthony Davis' book is a fantastic weapon in the continuing goal to protect ourselves. He tackles so many things I never would have even begun to consider. It was hard for me to stop reading this book.

The book describes the agonizing steps the officers have to go through to determine if the incident in question is a crime or a terrorist act.

The book will educate you on the new laws passed due to terrorism.

Anthony M. Davis does a wonderful job explaining why the Middle East does not get along with the Jewish people. The fact may surprise you that it is not about religion.

The book further describes all of the work we as a nation need to be doing to keep ourselves protected. There are so many areas that terrorists could threaten our citizens.

I am glad I read this book to further educate myself. We as citizens of the USA need to be aware of what is going on to keep ourselves safe. I suggest you read this fascinating and educational book. Then writing our congressmen to make the necessary changes to keep our families safe!
