Product Description
During the 1950s and 1960s, Austro-German scholars made decisive advances in developing concepts to account for "harmonic" processes in late medieval music. Despite the considerable potential these ideas hold for analysis and criticism of early music, they have hitherto exerted little influence outside their countries of origin. In order to render this valuable literature more immediately accessible to English-speaking students and scholars, this book presents translations of twelve seminal articles that originally appeared during the years 1948-1967, along with a comprehensive introductory chapter detailing the evolution of competing theories and terminology. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

The relationship between text and music is a central issue in fifteenth-century music studies. Decades of research and performance have failed to provide clear answers to the most basic questions, such as which notes go with which syllables and why. Patterns in Play focuses on the early French songs of Guillaume Dufay and proposes a basis for determining some rules of common procedure for interpreting both underlay and style.

Graeme M. Boone examines questions of rhythm and declamation, considering mensuration, linguistic and poetic prosody, and prosody in song. The first three chapters comprise a set of discussions preliminary to close rhythmic analysis of Dufay’s texted song melodies. Beginning with mensural rhythm and proceeding to poetics and the relationship between Dufay’s poetic and musical rhythms and musical declamation, Boone examines the musical features of rhythm, melody, tonal organization, counterpoint, text setting, and text expression. Offering fresh insight into the issues he raises, Boone clarifies the relationship between underlay and style and provides a better understanding of the technical and aesthetic issues that Dufay and other composers faced in weaving their patterns of song.

Read some of the reviews for the book and see how it makes an important contribution to the field of musicology and text setting.Boone has more work on test interpretation and linguistics, which flesh out this book as well.Witnessing a number of graduate students internationally who are basing their work on Boone's thesis, it is clear this is a valuable work worthy of your time if you are interested in this field of musicology. ... Product Description
Dufay now stands unchallenged as the leading composer of the Middle Ages.Performances of his music are increasingly frequent, and most of it can be heard on commercial recordings, so it is time for a study of his life and work that attempts to show why he has found so much favour with performers and listeners today.Over the last 30 years and particularly over the last decade, an enormous burst of scholarly endeavour has added immeasurably to our knowledge of the subject. This book is primarily an attempt to assemble the most important of that information which was hitherto available only in the articles, dissertations and books produced in many parts of Europe and the United States.Includes 80 music examples, 12 pages of photographs, and three maps. ... He is best remembered for creating the Korean alphabet Hangul, despite strong opposition from the scholars educated in hanja (Chinese script). Sejong is one of only two Korean rulers posthumously honored with the appellation "the Great," the other being Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo. Sejong was the third son of King Taejong. When he was twelve, he became Grand Prince Chungnyeong' ( ; ) and married a daughter of Shim On ( ; ) of Cheongsong ( ; ), commonly known as Lady Shim ( ; ), who later was given the title Queen Consort Soheon ( ; ). As a young prince, Sejong excelled in various studies and was favored by King Taejong over his two older brothers. Sejong's ascension to the throne was different from those of most other kings. The eldest son, Yangnyeong ( ), viewing himself as lacking in the requisite skills for kingship, believed that Sejong was destined to become king. Together with the second son, Grand Prince Hyoryeong ( ), he believed it was their duty to place Sejong as king. So they acted extremely rudely in the court, and soon were banished from Seoul. This plot of the two princes ultimately brought Sejong to the throne. The eldest prince became a wandering traveler and lived in the mountains...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=159204 ... Read more
