3-0 out of 5 stars Gnu Octave Manual is marginal
The plotting commands in particular are not up-to-date. There's insufficient detail on several functions, and several commands seem to be missing entirely. Overall it feels like a dump of online documentation. The book could use more examples and a more detailed format for enumerating and describing commands.

Still, it's much better than nothing, and I do use it regularly. ... Read more

Product Description
This monograph is a detailed exposition of the anatomy and morphology of the lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), with emphasis on larval anatomy. Lepidoptera are much-used experimental animals in entomology, and they are among the most serious pests of cash crops. The author has chosen the sphingid, Manduca sexta, as a model for the group, for its large size and its popularity as an experimental animal. The anatomical descriptions provided are extremely detailed, and the author has relied heavily on illustrations to aid the reader in developing a full understanding of the anatomy of these fascinationg insects. ... Product Description
This is the untold saga of the 130 passengers aboard the ill-fated luxury liner who were bound for Canada. Author Alan Hustak began his research ten years before the blockbuster movie came out. He conducted hundreds of interviews across the country with direct descendants and relatives of Canadians who sailed on the Titanic's maiden. In the process he unearthed historic photographs and stories which contribute another dimension to the familiar tale.Hustak's chronicles are more poignant than fiction, such as the tale of Quigg Baxter, the young Montreal hockey player who risked all to smuggle his Belgian fiance aboard, the Fortune family from Winnipeg which failed to heed a clairvoyant's warning; and Harry Markland Molson, the richest Canadian aboard who was persuaded by Toronto millionaire Arthur Peuchen to extend his stay in England and sail home with him on the Titanic. Hustak discloses the scandalous behaviour of second class passenger Joseph Fynney and tells of the young honeymooners Bert and Vera Dick of Calgary who started an enduring legend about the disaster. Some books insist the Titanic's last victim, found in a lifeboat a month after the disaster, was from New Jersey; others say he was from Chicago. In fact he was Thomson Beattie of Winnipeg.

These stories and others have been overlooked or ignored by Americanand British historians and enthusiasts who have written about theTitanic. Titanic: The Canadian Story begins where other Titanicaccounts end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book on titanic
i glad the canadianvictims stories are finally being told.the author tell poignant stories about the people who surivie and die that horrible night in the north atlantic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Excellent Book
I loved this book from start to finish. Alan Hustak did a superb job of telling the stories of the Canadians who were on board the doomed ship in April 1912. The Baxter Family touched me the most when the son "Quigg" carried his mother to the lifeboat and gave her his silver flask of brandy and told everyone to keep their spirits up. His sister Zette and his lady friend also survived. If you like Titanic history then you must read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Canadians who went down with Titanic
Amid the craze about the Titanic that the James Cameron film created, many Titanic books were published. This is a rare account, more a list of biographies, of some of the more interesting Canadians who boarded the great ill-fated ship. Author Alan Hustak did a good job of salvaging these true stories of real Canadians. Many of these accounts are published here for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something Special!
It seems just about everyone is writing a book on the Titanic these days, and many of these new titles are worthy additions to the literature. But it is a rare and exciting discovery when you find a book that breakscompletely new ground uncovering a portion of the Titanic story never toldbefore.

Alan Hustak's book is one of these groundbreading works. His bookis about the 130 passengers on the Titanic that were bound for Canada. Hewrites about who these people were, why they were on the ship, as well astheir eventual fates. He tells about people from all walks of life from theproud and wealthy in first class to the immigrants in third class.

In retrospect, it is amazing that a book on this subject has not been writtensooner. Some of the most recognizable names of the drama, Arthur Peuchen, the Countess of Rothes, the Allison baby - even Eva Hart, all were boundfor Canada. Yet in most other titles their Canadian connection is barelymentioned, if not completely ignored.

The author has put an important, but neglected, aspect of the Titanic story back into the spotlight.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm....
I must admit that when I bought this book I thought I was going to get some interesting glimpse of life aboard Titanic and of its sinking through Canadian passengers, but I was disappointed. This is more like a book ofthe family history of each Canadian passenger. It rarely delves intointeresting Titanic facts and instead reminds us of information that hasalready been written. I must say though, there are some little gems ofinformation present but they are too few and aren't realy delt with. A goodreads though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven but essential
This is an underrated little gem of a book, especially for those with an interest in Grant. John Eaton knew USG in 1863 and had the unique ability of writing well about him, illuminating personal features not found elsewhere. My favorite scene is when Eaton hears rumors that Grant is hitting the bottle again. He goes out to Grant's hotel room to check out whether the whispers are true. There he finds Julia, Grant's much-adored wife, applying hot towels to the General's head and fussing over him. Why? Because he was suffering from a migraine, and one brought on by stress, not bourbon.

Eaton also includes some interesting commentary on Grant's irascible, unpleasant father. His insights into Grant's psyche make this worth your while. For anyone with an interest in Grant or the Freedmen, this is excellent source material. ... Read more

Product Description
Meditating on the Psalms offers spiritual insights into 52 of the bestloved Psalms with an original translation and a devotional commentary. The discussion of each Psalm ends with a related Christian prayer, either from the tradition or written by the author, John Eaton, himself. There is also an introduction that explains the background to the Psalms -- who wrote them and why -- and their importance throughout the ages. No one is more qualified to write on the Psalms than John Eaton. He is a distinguished scholar, now retired, and has spent a lifetime studying the Psalms. His pastoral work and his concern for the environment and ecology give him great sympathy for the wide-ranging material found in the Psalms. The Psalms are widely regarded as some of the greatest poetry ever written. Meditating on the Psalms makes them accessible to readers of all ages and all denominations and will be widely welcomed as a useful aid to prayer. ... Read more
