Product Description
From the end of the 18th century to the beginning of World War I, the oratorio was Britain's most important and accesible musical genre. Understanding Elgar's four oratorios within this history should add a great deal to our understanding of Elgar, musical life at the time, and the differences between the public and private spaces of Britain's religious worship. The study explores Elgar's four works as part of the British oratorio tradition. Only by examining the English oratorio in general at the end of the 19th century should we be able to appreciate how revolutionary Elgar's works are. Each one moved away from the typical oratorio formats to portray a drama, based not on action, but characterization. Analyzing these four compositions through narrative reveals that "The Light of Life" and "Gerontius" gave Elgar the tools he needed to create a musical epic of Wagnerian proportions within "The Apostles" and "The Kingdom". Central to the author's discussion are the issues of Wagnerism's effect on Elgar's music, and Elgar's reaction to being labeled Wagerian.Locating Elgar's oratorios in this context and examining them individually should allow for a more measured understanding of the complexities, contradictions, and subleties of the melding of public music and public religion in the late Victorian age, as well as the clash of conservative musical genres with more modern methods. These investigations hope to show that Elgar, in the oratorio's last triumph, transcended the genre's limitations in a new, unique manner. ... Read more

The first extended study of the work, this Cambridge Music Handbook contains historical information concerning the conception and writing of the work, an extended musical discussion requiring only a little technical knowledge of music, and a fascinating survey of the "solutions" to the mystery implied by the title of Elgar's most famous work. ... Product Description
Reflecting the growth of international interest in Elgar's music, this collection of essays brings together leading scholars from the UK and the USA, and covers the broadest range of analytical approaches to his music. It is perhaps in textual analysis and criticism that Elgar studies are showing their most remarkable growth. In this volume, analysts and theorists place Elgar at the centre of research into late-tonal music theory - particularly Schenkerian and neo-Riemannian - and the continually burgeoning area of musical hermeneutics. Through study of published scores and recently discovered sketches, different contributions explore Elgar's musical language and treatment of symphonic form, and themes in his music such as empire, race, the pastoral and idyllic, mourning, and loss. The essays cover the entire range of current thinking on Elgar's music, and have wide ramifications for future approaches to music of the early twentieth century. ... Read more

Product Description
Too frequently a multi-author work on a composer obscures rather than illuminates its subject. This volume casts a genuinely prismatic light upon it. R.J. Stove, The New Criterion "An Anniversary Portrait succeeds in offering a sufficient yet panoramic view of Elgar's life and music. The impressive list of authors and concise nature of their contributions make this book an easily digestible and enjoyable read". Muso Edward Elgar was a man of many contradictions. He was born an outsider, into a family of lower-middle class, Catholic, origins. Yet his fame, and ability to write music that struck a chord in the national consciousness, led him to adopt a sycophantic attitude towards the Royal Family and high society, even though he always felt ill at ease with them. Elgar was a depressive with a problematic marriage, who craved recognition, but in many ways he regretted the piece of music which made him famous. 'Pomp and Circumstance' made him the leading English composer of his age, but also contributed to the jingoism which he so disliked during the First World War. Yet, unquestionably, he was the greatest musical genius that England had produced in centuries. This Portrait, by some of the scholars and musicians that understand him best, offers new light on a wide range of aspects of Edward Elgar's life and work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting set of essays on a great composer
This book contains several rewarding essays on Sir Edward Elgar that help provide a fuller picture of the composer of several well-known pieces (the Pomp & Circumstance March #1 being in the super-well-known category). Each reader is likely to find a different set of essays to be most interesting; mine are those by Diana McVeagh, Stephen Hough and Mark Elder. One problem is that the authors are not identified. Some, such as Hough, Janet Baker and Yehudi Menuhin are well-known, but the others are known mostly to persons already well familiar with the composer, and some will be new to most readers. Many chapters have notes, but the one by Hans Keller does not despite his quoting three sources. ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides a compilation of policy, institutional and governance recommendations from eighteen leading international experts, in response to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) finding that over the last 50 years humans have degraded ecosystems services at a faster rate and on a larger scale than at any time in human history. The MEA provided the most comprehensive examination ever undertaken of the conditions and trends of ecosystems. By design, the MEA stopped short of prescribing policy recommendations. With this in mind, the international contributors have been drawn from diverse backgrounds to review the MEA findings and define a global action agenda for governments, businesses, international organizations, civil society, and research organizations. The book encompasses recommendations at the local, national and global scales. "Policies for Sustainable Governance of Global Ecosystem Services" proposes an action agenda for integrating ecosystem considerations into development decisions. It focuses on ecosystem services as the benefits people receive from nature. It seeks to change the focus from how to protect ecosystems from development to how to invest in ecosystems for development. It represents earliest thinking on a global action agenda for reversing ecosystem degradation and promoting more robust development. This book is aimed at professionals, academics and researchers working in the environmental and development fields including advanced undergraduates and graduates of environmental, ecosystem and development studies. It will also be of great value to civil society organizations and environmental research organizations as well as policymakers themselves and the interested lay reader. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The authors in this book regard the process of economic expansion as a non-homogeneous and multifaceted phenomenon, which has deeply affected human welfare, and cultural, social and political change. The book is a bridge between the theorists (Rosenstein-Rodan, Lewis, Myrdal, and Hirschmann) who in the post-war period analyzed regional inequalities, structural change and dualism, and the modern literature on economic growth. The latter has emphasized the existence of multiple equilibria, bifurcations and various types of dynamic complexity, and clarified the conditions for the emergence of phenomena such as cumulative causation, path dependence and hysteresis. These are the typical ingredients of structural change, economic development or underdevelopment.

Investigating the `mechanisms of economic development', this book will be of great interest to researchers and postgraduate students, especially those oriented towards the study of structural and geographical aspects of economic growth and development. ... Read more

This bibliography of Post Keynesian economics is an introduction to the school and its leading figures. Contributions are featured from the founding fathers of the school such as Robert Kahn, Nicholas Kaldor, Michal Kalecki, Joan Robinson, Piero Sraffa and Sidney Weintraub, their successors and disciples, and economists openly hostile to post Keynesianism whose work has nevertheless shed light on the school. ...
