Product Description
This work is useful for SATB accompanied by strings and harp, or organ or piano. Faure's "Cantique de Jean Racine" has all the emotional appeal and refined elegance that one associates with its composer, and has a cherished place in the repertory of both sacred and secular choirs. The orchestration makes the work suitable for programming with Rutter's edition of "Faure's Requiem". ... Read more

Product Description
The music of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) is an important link between the innovations of late Romanticism and the experimentation of the early 20th century. A student of Saint-Saëns, he, in turn, taught Ravel and was a mentor to the young modernists of Les Six. These 12 nocturnes and 12 barcarolles, composed over a span of 40 years, document his move from Romanticism to the frontiers of 20th-century music. Reprinted from authoritative French editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, but missing one of Fauré's best
Of course pianists should have this wonderful book, just don't assume it's complete.Fauré actually wrote a thirteenth Nocturne (in B minor) and a thirteenth Barcarolle (in C major), neither of which is included here. Both of these are characteristic late Fauré, but the Nocturne #13 is particularly not to be missed.I was just playing it over tonight and was amazed by the dark drama of the music. It's as Fauré's biographer Jessica Duchen said, that it seems to stare death in the face.

Both the Nocturne #13 and the suave, tranquil Barcarolle #13 are available individually from Masters Music Publications, and I would suggest that pianists supplement this book with both of those works to make a complete set of Fauré's nocturnes and barcarolles. ... Read more

Product Description
This popular suite of piano pieces is one of the treasures of the onepiano, four hand repertoire. The suite opens with a dreamy and tranquilBerceuse. Mi-a-ou, the second piece, is full of rhythmical leaps and energy. Le jardin de Dolly characterizes an enchanted dream garden. Also included are Kitty-valse, Tendresse, and Pas espagnol. Filledwith Impressionistic color and delicacy, this collection is engraved inscore form with Primo above Secondo for ease in rehearsing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars factual error
This edition makes a large error, as to Dolly's identity. Yes, she was the child of singer Emma Bardac, but did not gain fame as "Chou-Chou," Debussy's step-daughter. Chou-Chou was in fact, the daughter of Emma and Claude Debussy, and to whom Debussy's "Children's Corner Suite" is dedicated. She tragically died a few months after Debussy, at the age of about 13, whereas, Dolly de Tinan (nee Bardac) lived to a ripe old age. I certainly wouldn't recommend this edition with such a poor grasp of the facts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many typos.
There are too many obvious typos in this edition. Don't they have someone proofreading these things? Are all Belwin editions this bad? ... Read more

Product Description
This is a comprehensive biography of the French composer Gabriel Faure for the general reader, placing his work in the context of his times. Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is one of the best-loved French composers of his era: works such as his Requiem, "Pavane", "Dolly Suite, and "Cantique de Jean Racine" are perennial favourites. But Faure's importance runs far deeper. His music has a unique blend of vigour and restraint, sensuality and purity: an individual voice with a degree of integrity that helped him to resist the overwhelming forces - notably the music of Wagner - that held his Parisian contemporaries in thrall. His artistic independence served to inspire many of the next generation of French composers seeking to create a new Gallic identity beyond World War I. At the Paris Conservatoire, Faure's composition teaching was vital to such figures as Maurice Ravel, Nadia Boulanger and Charles Koechlin; when he ultimately became the Conservatoire's director, his reforms were the most radical the institution had yet experienced. Faure has often been thought of as a dreamy, somewhat unworldly individual; this book, however, reveals his ambition and decisiveness.Born in southern France and educated at the Ecole Niedermeyer rather than the powerful Paris Conservatoire, he struggled for years to achieve recognition from France's musical establishment, which often deemed him a dangerous outsider; in his personal life he struggled also against bouts of depression, an unsatisfactory marriage and, later, devastating deafness. Faure's life and works are explored in the context of the creative melting pot of fin-de-siecle Paris. His relationship with such figures as Saint-Saens, Liszt, Proust and Verlaine are considered in detail and help to create a portrait of this fascinating milieu. This biography, which charts Faure's long and difficult rise to fame, sets out to illuminate his individuality and reveal his enduring legacy to French music. ... Read more
