Product Description

Everyone knows about Herschel Walker, but what about George Woodruff, who, in a fogbound game against Sewanee, passed his helmet into their secondary and then handed the ball off to Hafford Hay, who ran untouched into the endzone? Athens is famed for its postgame victory parties, but who can recall the mountainous bonfire in 1910 that, when ignited, blew out every windowpane in three nearby campus buildings? Herty Field, the University of Georgia's first gridiron, is now a parking lot, but the glory lives on in this classic, fast-paced chronicle of Bulldogs' football from 1891 to 1916.

Product Description
This is an introduction to the basic tools of mathematicsneeded to understand the relation between knot theory and quantumgravity. The book begins with a rapid course on manifolds anddifferential forms, emphasizing how these provide a proper languagefor formulating Maxwell's equations on arbitrary spacetimes. Theauthors then introduce vector bundles, connections and curvature inorder to generalize Maxwell theory to the Yang-Mills equations. Therelation of gauge theory to the newly discovered knot invariants suchas the Jones polynomial is sketched. Riemannian geometry is thenintroduced in order to describe Einstein's equations of generalrelativity and show how an attempt to quantize gravity leads tointeresting applications of knot theory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Text
I really enjoyed reading this book!A must have if you are interested in mathematical physics.Every page is a pedagogical masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite text of all time (so far)
This book should be at the top of anyone's reading list who is planning to get into serious mathematical physics. It deals with a good deal of complex material, but the presentation is easy to follow, and shouldn't be beyond most advanced undergraduates. There are a lot of good exercises which fill in most of the gaps. (If you want a book heavy on detail, this book may not be for you.If you want a book that gives you all the tools you're going to need to get start understanding quantum gravity and other areas in a short time, get this book immediately!)It's a shame the paperback edition doesn't seem to be available anymore; it's half the price, and checking with the publisher reveals that the paperback edition is still in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book !
Covers many topics in Mathematical Physics with great clarity. Highly recommended for those who are interested in a modern approach to Mathematical Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
A beautifully written book which should be entitled "quantum gravity primer for the practical man".Clear and self-contained, this book will serve aa a small survey of mathematical physics, giving the readertools in particle physics and gravity.Excellently motivated topics. Compact enough to bring with you anywhere. The only thing it fails at isdicing a proper tomato.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Need More Northern Whitetail Books
As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it.So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice For Any Deer Hunter
It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it.When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.

Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Ozoga Whitetail Intrigue
I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements.Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Yet Haunting Illustration of the Poem
Reason for Reading: Read aloud to the 10yo as part of our history curriculum.

This is a book I've read several times. I've read the entire book to myself and aloud to each of my children plus I've read the poem from the book numerous times. This is not really a book about World War 1, or the Great War as it lets children know it was once called. Plenty of information about the war is imparted but that is through the telling of the story of Lt. Col. John McCrae, Canadian soldier and poet, how he came to write the poem "In Flanders Fields" and the impact that poem had on the people at the time as well as its lasting effect.

Textually, the book starts with a copy of the poem written in McCrae's own hand. Then there is a very brief set up for WWI, and a brief background on John McCrae before he was in Flanders. It then goes on to describe in detail the conditions of war at Flanders and McCrae is quoted from his own letters. We are given the story, well the two variations, of how and why John wrote the poem and the public's immediate overwhelming response to its heartfelt message. Then how the imagery of poppies became incorporated into war posters, advertisements for Victory Bonds and quotes from "In Flanders Fields" were used as taglines to inspire people. We get a good look at McCrae's war life as a surgeon and how he lived out his life, eventually dying on the front lines of pneumonia. But the message of the poppy didn't end with Lt. Col. John McCrae's death nor the end of WWI, it became a symbol of remembrance of those who have fallen in wars to fight for our freedom and the custom of wearing a poppy, which started during McCrae's life, is still followed today in many countries throughout the world as they honour a national day of Remembrance on November 11th.

Visually, the text pages are illustrated with a few drawings, photographs, postcards, and artifacts such as medals. But the true impact of this book comes from the beautiful yet haunting paintings of Janet Wilson which illustrate the poem a few lines at a time. In between the text pages every so often the poem is slowly told a few lines at a time using a two page spread entirely filled with the painting while the words are written along the bottom of the page. These paintings truly bring the poem's meaning forward to anyone who looks at them. Words and picture combine to tell the haunting, powerful cry of the poem. One cannot read the poem along with these paintings and not feel this poem in their gut, perhaps have their voice crack; it gets to me every time.

While I certainly love this book as a whole I would recommend it solely for the illustrated version of the poem alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars In Flander's Field
A valuable book for those who wish to remind their children - and themselves - of the utter horrors of a brutal war. While not for very young children, it would be a great way to get one's family to think about war and its violence and, sometimes, its absolute necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A story that should be shared
This lovely book is a perfect introduction to Veteran's Day or Remembrance Day or World War I. The story of John McCrea and WWI flows through the book, interspersed with lines from the poem, "In Flanders fields." It discusses the significance of the date, November 11 and supplies interesting details from the period.Over two page spreads Wilson also interprets lines from the poem with lovely paintings that fill in more information about soldier life.

This book is very popular with kids who like nonfiction "war" books.

Cultural references to this poem abound. The poem is a classic that should be shared with young people today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every child should know this poem
Growing up in Canada, I and every other child knew this poem inside and out. Every Rememberence Day[Nov.11th], we recited it, wore our poppies and then walked down to the cemetery to commemorate all the soldiers who died during the different wars. We talked about it in class for a few weeks.I gave it to my children after I found the book at a Canadian bookstore the week of it's release. They in turn took it school and their teachers read it to their classes. As a education major, I will use it in my studies and then as a teacher for my class to learn about the World Wars. The art work is beautiful and the story enclosed is lovely too, if ever can be of a book about war. It's too bad this isn't used over here in the States.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Flanders Field
I read this book while resting my feet at Book Expo 2000. At least three people stopped to ask me about it because they were so taken by the illustrations. This picture book for young people intersperses breathtaking illustrations for the poem "In Flanders Field" withbackground on World War I and the story of the writing of this poem. Adeeply affecting and touching book, it will give young people a personalview of war, particularly this war. Unfortunately, many children as well asadults know nothing about World War I. This book is a fine introduction anda good war to broach a painful topic. By any standard, it is well-wellwritten and thoughtful. ... Read more

It's game day and the parking lot surrounding Green Bay'sLambeau Field is awash in a bouquet of beer-soaked bratwursts sizzlingover flames. Outside Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey,it's burgers and dogs, and in New Orleans, fragrant blasts of shrimpgumbo bounce off the Superdome. Whichever stadium you visit, you'llfind that tailgating is alive, well, and cooking in America. JohnMadden, an adamant fan of this age-old tradition, helps the cause withhis new cookbook, John Madden's Ultimate Tailgating. But bewarned: Madden isn't into fancy, white-linen cuisine. These aresmash-mouth meals, meant for those willing to drip sauce on theirshirts and deal with the heartburn that follows. He starts simple, with recipes like Smoked Prime Rib and Salt-Cured Spit-Roasted Leg ofLamb. Then he ups the ante with Metrodome Horseradish Burgers, BrewCrew Venison Stew, Tabasco Sesame Noodles, and Pork to Taste Like WildBoar. Each of the 80 stomach-grumbling recipes was subjected to tastetests by hundreds of tailgaters. And if it's good enough for thesediscerning taste buds, it's good enough for the All-Madden CulinaryTeam. --Ben Tiffany ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It
This book is pretty good, buy much more useful as cultural anthropology rather than a cookbook. It is a collection of recipes from dedicated NFL fans from across the nation (so, there is no rhyme or reason for the wildly disparate selection of recipes, other than the author likes them). While most of us do not tailgate on Sundays during NFL season, it is nonetheless a useful collection of recipes to feed a crowd.
I really like this collection of recipes, crowd pleasers that anyone can do. There are many recipes you will want to do. Most are of the simple mix `n dump variety (Smoked Prime Rib takes several hours and planning, Terducken is best left to the butcher, Deep Fried Turkey should only be tried if you are fireman, and Pork To Taste Like Wild Boar is clever but requires several days of marinating).
More importantly, it is a mini-autobiography of Mr. Football himself. It is a record of a person, a time, and a place. This volume is chockfull of personal reminisces. If you like football, you gotta have this book, even if you do not do a single recipe from it.
The recipes themselves remind me of those many "junior league" cookbooks that were popular a couple of decades ago: traditional, family fare. This is a good thing, since most of the recipes are not difficult to do. Many recipes require either a smoker and a grill; however, the book simply assumes you already are proficient with their use, as no help is provided for their use. There are icons that tell you which requires a smoker or grill, but many others can be done in a pot or pan, either on your kitchen stove or an outdoor cooker, and these do not have an icon in the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars It may be Fattening, but it is WONDERFUL!!!
John Madden-I salute you! I grew up listening and watching you coach and provide excellent commentary on NFL games throughout my life! I always wanted a cookbook that dealt with those wonderful tailgates that you displayed on your TV shows, but never got a chance to give recipes! Thanks for "filling in the BLANKS"!!! You are a great man and I love this cookbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tailgating is half the fun of a good football game
While many of the receipes are for large groups, the basic ingredients are here, including humor and barbecue tips for both novice and top gun. The review of other stadium and facilities for those who want to travel withtheir team let you know what to expect in Seattle or Dallas, for instance, and to me, that is worth the price of the book alone. Last year I gavethe book to many of my male and female friends as a Christmas gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Madden has equal gust for the grill and the grid iron.
Typical Jon Madden. Big grills, big meats, and big dishes are what this book is all about. The roughly 100 recipes come from authentic and experienced tailgaters that have brought vigorous American life to the lotsand for years, including the big man himself. The original chefs all have abio and a their recipes a story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good career advice
This book answered a lot of my questions and even some that I didn't even know I had. It helped me make some important decisions concerning my future. I'd suggest it to anyone looking for a career in this field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative...
I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into law enforcement careers that I might be interested in.It did have some information that was good, although the book does have a decidedly "Federal" spin; more than half the book is dedicated to Federal agencies, but this is to be expected since Mr. Douglas is a former FBI agent. The book does contain very general information, although I was hoping for more tips and advice that a person could use in order to pursue a law enforcement career, other than wavetop overviews of several different agencies, most of which a reader could gain through visiting the websites for those agencies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Find out the same information online for free
This book is very general in nature. Most of the book is fluffed up with detailed descriptions and history of city departments that you will never apply too. As far as his more extensive knowledge on federal agencies like the ATF, DEA, FBI, CIA, this book's information is dated in salary scale and half of the requirements listed to obtain the position. He fluffs up the book even more by using the first chapter to scare away those people that should not become officers. All and all, I learned a little bit from this book, but if I took a brief few minutes online, I could have easily found more in depth information for free, without the dated material, from a man the has RECENTLY been a law enforcement officer.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth the money
Although much of the information in this book is available on the internet, you can't find it unless you know what your looking for. This book covers a very broad range of federal, State and local law enforcement organizations, from the well known to obscure. Each having a small 2-10 page section on the agencies history, positions and duties, and requirements for employment. Some examples of organizations covered are the FBI, DEA, ATF, Bostan PD, and also smaller ones like Department of State Security, ICE, and Park Rangers. Yes they have special agents too. Of course if you know which agencies interest you then definitly find a more specialized book. But if your like me and want a more general preview then this is a well spent 15$.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Money!
This book includes some of the best information on choosing a career in law enforcement that I've ever seen. John Douglas knows what he is talking about and has done a great deal of research to supplement his vast knowledge of law enforcement. It's easy for anyone to understand and is a quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering a career in law enforcement and is just not sure which angle they want to start their career from. ... Read more

This classic book, originally published in 1968, is based on notes of a year-long seminar the authors ran at Princeton University. The primary goal of the book was to give a rather complete presentation of algebraic aspects of global class field theory, and the authors accomplished this goal spectacularly: for more than 40 years since its first publication, the book has served as an ultimate source for many generations of mathematicians. In this revised edition, two mathematical additions complementing the exposition in the original text are made. Product Description

The pioneering work of Abel and Galois in the early nineteenth century demonstrated that the long-standing quest for a solution of quintic equations by radicals was fruitless: no formula can be found. The techniques they used were, in the end, more important than the resolution of a somewhat esoteric problem, for they were the genesis of modern abstract algebra.

This book provides a gentle introduction to Galois theory suitable for third- and fourth-year undergraduates and beginning graduates. The approach is unashamedly unhistorical: it uses the language and techniques of abstract algebra to express complex arguments in contemporary terms. Thus the insolubility of the quintic by radicals is linked to the fact that the alternating group of degree 5 is simple - which is assuredly not the way Galois would have expressed the connection.

Topics covered include:

rings and fields

integral domains and polynomials

field extensions and splitting fields

applications to geometry

finite fields

the Galois group

equations

Group theory features in many of the arguments, and is fully explained in the text. Clear and careful explanations are backed up with worked examples and more than 100 exercises, for which full solutions are provided.

Product Description

Despite being the most capable cavalry leader of his generation, Sir John French has always aroused controversy. Posterity has judged him an unfeeling butcher, responsible for more deaths in the first two hours of the battle of Loos than all the casualties on both sides in the 1944 D-Day landings. But French has another side, revealed in his private papers—a side filled with affairs and personal torment. An esteemed Professor of Military and Security Studies tells French’s compelling, dramatic story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor FM French!!
I thought the author did a very good job on a very forgotten man. FM French is a classic example of the Wrong Man at the wrong place , wrong time and with the wrong job. In my humble opinion he was born about 50 years too late. If he had died at the end of the Boer War. Then I think that History would of been more kind to him. But none the less, I can say that could of anyone else of done a better job than he at the start of WWI? He could have lost the entire BEF at Mons or on the Retreat from Mons. And yes he was very cautious at the Marne but he had the only real British Army in the world under his command. But could of any one else realistically done better? Especially against one of the best trained and led Armies of the World? I think that Haig would have done a lost worst & Allenby was too junior and inexperienced in Modern War at the time. Later on he (Allenby) would literally kick the Ottoman Empire to death. I would also argue the same for the Battle of Loos and his handling of Ireland.
As to his failings of keeping it in his pockets. In those days "Rank hath its priviledges" had real meaning for his class. Today it would probadly lead to a cashiering of his commission. So I shall refrain from judging with 21 Century standards a basically Edwardian Officer.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Colorful Life of a Forgotten General
Richard Holmes' well-written and often fascinating biography, "The Little Field Marshal", is the life of Sir John French, once one of Britain's foremost soldiers but now largely forgotten.French had the misfortune to be the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force in the difficult opening year of the First World War, a role that Holmes makes clear he was poorly suited for.

French entered the British Army in 1852.His service in uniform would span the half century that marked the apogee of the British Empire and the beginning of its decline, and Holmes's biography is to some degree a portrait of the times as well as of his subject.French was a hardworking young officer who earned a battlefield reputation as a courageous and dashing cavalry commander in Sudan and South Africa. The honors he earned in the Boer War, and the favor of various patrons, would propell French to the very top of the British military establishment. He would be the obvious first choice to command Britain's Army on the continent in 1914.

As Holmes makes clear, French, a superb leader of men and a loyal officer of the crown, was poorly suited to the challenges of high command. He never mastered staff work, was often politically naive, undisciplined in his personal life, and too emotional for his own good.He made many friends and many enemies, and adapted indifferently to the demands of coalition generalship under the stalemated conditions of 1914-1915.Holmes successfully redeems him from the "General Blimp" stereotype of history but reveals him as a good officer of the Empire who outlived his times.

"The Little Field Marshal" provides some fascinating insights into the politics of the British Army in the first years of the 20th Century, and into the handling of the "Irish problem" and the struggle over home rule.

This book is highly recommended to students of the First World War and of the history of the British Army

5-0 out of 5 stars reevaluation of reputation of high British officer
Field Marshall John French got a poor reputation in his own day when British troops he commanded were slaughtered in the first two hours of the World WAr I battle of Loos. His controversial term as Viceroy in Ireland during the time of the "Troubles" there did nothing to improve his reputation. Scandals in his personal life involving a series of mistresses, including the wife of a fellow officer, only further tarnished his name. Holmes does not find any grounds for elevating French's reputation. What he does is add a new dimension to this historical character by relating French's torments over the large number of deaths resulting from his leadership in the First World War along with the general carnage of the War. These concerns that dogged French are found mostly in his private papers, creating discordance between his public image as an unfeeling military leader and his private reflections. Holmes concludes that "in many respects, [French] never transcended the nineteenth century." By temperament, training, class, and expectations of himself and his peers, French was unable to effectively come to grips with either military or political problems of the early 20th century.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair portrayal of a much maligned General
This book is plainly baised toward its subject, Sir John French, and is very much like an official biography. However, it does has its merits in showing that French was not the bloodthirsty, uncaring, blundering stereotype as exemplified by his more infamous contemprorary, Douglas Haig. In the book French was seen to be much depressed by the casaulties of war, and unfairly intrigued against by a whole bunch of unsavoury characters behind his back, like Kitchener, Ian Hamilton,. Haig, Robertson and other assorted incompetents who tried, only too successfully, to blame French for all that was wrong with the BEF.

We are also told of the semi mutiny of the British Army in Ireland as a result of Home Rule, though French's scamdalous private life and his many flirtings outside of marriage are not touched on.

Definitely a much better and balanced biography than the ridiculous one on Haig by John Terraine. ... Read more

Product Description
Timely, authoritative, application-oriented… an in-depth exploration of current and future uses of FPGAs in digital systems The development of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) may well be the most important breakthrough for the microelectronics industry since the invention of the microprocessor. Using FPGAs, a system designer working on a PC can now develop a working prototype in a few hours and change it at will in just a few minutes, rather than waiting weeks or months for a printed-circuit assembly or a custom integrated circuit to be built. This newfound ability to change a system by simply altering its configuration memory is also leading to exciting new forms of computing, such as array applications that exploit parallelism. Now in a book that functions equally well as a working professional reference and a pedagogically consistent computer engineering text, John V. Oldfield and Richard C. Dorf:

  • Provide a detailed overview of FPGAs in digital systems design
  • Explain the underlying principles, strengths, and limitations of most FPGA architectures
  • Supply many real-life case studies, from elementary to advanced applications—including examples of "custom computing machines"
  • Review cutting-edge developments, including new architectures and a new field-programmable interconnect chip
  • Discuss key economic and business aspects of FPGA manufacture and applications and their role in intellectual property protection
  • Demonstrate ways in which FPGAs offer plausible solutions to some of the major computing problems of our day
