Product Description

Fields of Fire kicks off in war-torn Ukraine in 1942, telling the tale of a Dynamo Kiev side forced into a series of propaganda matches against their Nazi occupiers. They are ordered to lose but repeatedly hammer the Germans and are finally forced to pay with their lives. This terrible but factual tale is the first of many landmark games examined in John Ludden's collection of milestone matches in football history. The tales are laced with wonderful characters, such as the cherry-red shirts of Hungary romping through the 1950s; a tubby little genius called Puskas; Di Stefano and his wizards from Madrid; Busby and his tragic, but brilliant babes; and the villainous Argentinean Rattin at Wembley. Ludden examines Pele and his glorious team exploding in Technicolor; German glory in 1974; Argentinean skulduggery in 1978; the France-Germany World Cup semi-final; the infamous arrival of Diego Armando Maradona; Gazza's famous tears in Turin; and the tragic shooting of Columbian Escobar.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read for all soccer fans
This book had me hooked from start to finish. The author has an excellent writing style which sweeps the reader along at great pace through a marvellous selection of footballing tales. From the despair of a Ukrainian team in world war two being executed for refusing to allow the Nazia to beat them. Right through to the dawn of a new Millenium and Manchester United winning the European cup in breathtaking style against Bayern Munich, John Ludden's first book left me enthralled. I thoroughly recommend Fields of fire to anyone remotely interested in the history of soccer. My one complaint, if it could be called so would be the choice of certain games. But that is merely minor. This is an excellent book and i hope to hear more from Mr Ludden. ... Read more

Product Description
Lifelong learning has become a mantra, but what does learning mean and do in the lives of adults? How has it changed over time and across generations? What are the connections with the changing worlds of work, the family and communities? What difference does it make to life chances? How do we learn from life, and how do we learn for life? How can people's prospects of learning be improved? The Learning Lives project was one of the largest and most ambitious in the Teaching and Learning Research Programme as over three years the authors tracked the lives of 120 adults from across Britain, undertaking 528 in-depth interviews to ask people about their life histories and the place of learning in their lives. Alongside this data from the British Household Panel Study, a nationally representative survey of about 5,000 households was applied which results in a uniquely rich and detailed body of evidence, certainly within the UK, and arguably internationally. The central conclusion is that learning 'means and does' much more in people's lives than is acknowledged in current policies in Britain and Europe. These policies focus on the economic functions of lifelong learning.By contrast, the findings show not only that learning is multi-faceted and complex; they also show how learning helps people to strengthen and develop their sense of self, and assume a greater degree of control over their lives. They also show that people value the experience of learning in relation to their everyday lives and in order to adjust to changing circumstances. And they demonstrate that people's 'learning horizons' - that is, their ability to imagine themselves learning for a different future - are bounded both by individual characteristics and by situational and structural factors. Strategies for improving learning therefore need to vary to meet different needs and circumstances. ... Read more

Product Description
In Barr Flies, John Barr shares hisconfidencepatterns, the flies that he carries with him at all times to cover nearly every scenario an angler might encounter on the water. When used at an appropriate time with a good presentation, they are guaranteed to catch fish. Barr tells how he developed each fly, gives tips on when and how to fish them, and explains how he fishes multiple-fly rigs with the Copper John as the center of a 3-fly system that optimizes fish-catching potential. John Barr is the most successful designer of commercially distributed flies in the world. His Barr Emerger is an unrivaled pattern for western mayfly situations, and the Copper John has evolved into the most popular fly of the millennium. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Barr Flies
Even if you already know how to tie these patterns, this is an incredible book. One of the things I look for in a fly tying book, is does the author give his/her advice on fishing the pattern.John Barr does that very well in this book.I grew up fishing, but only began fly fishing about 3 years ago.I didn't have a mentor, so all my learning came from asking a local fly shop owner a lot of questions and books. If I had to recommend 3 books to a new person, this book would be in the list. The tips given in this book will get you catching fish quickly.Have fun fishing and when you can't fish tie flies for the next trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars good demonstrations
This book provided very good visual demonstrations of the various flies that are included and I would recommend it for anyone intersted in tying flies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barr Flies
A great book from an author who doesn't just talk the talk.John Barr is one of the most innovative and creative tyers around today. He also happens to be a superb fisherman. When you team his tying talent up with the artful photography of Charlie Craven you wind up with a "can't miss."That's what this book is.The Copper John, Barr's Emerger and Slumpbuster are three of my favorites. Now I can tie them with not only easy, step-by-step directions, but with crystal clear images as well. This book will stay within arms length on my tying desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barr none!
I came across a little emerger pattern a few years ago.I didn't know what it was but, it's been the best thing in my fly box.I've caught many 18"+ trout on it and even a smallmouth bass and a few Kokanee salmon.Turns out it's the Barr Emerger.

Everyone has probably used a Copper John at one time or another.

If you tie flies, this is the book for getting familiar with tying these patterns, their many variations, and how to fish them.

It's got lots of John's other patterns, great detailed tying instructions, recipes, and color photos.

I would recommend it to anyone who likes catching trout on a fly rod.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Field Guide
I tried this product as a replacement for the old Compton's Field Geology manual I purchased decades ago as a geology major. This compact volume appears to have all the necessary material to serve as a valuable field guide a student or professional can carry in their backpack or field bag. My desire to try this stems from a need to find a good guide to use in my Field Methods in Geology class at RPI. I'm certain this will be the required text for the class. It's worth the modest $30 +/- cost. Used ones should come down in price, though; they are not worth the slight price advantage versus a new volume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual
I've been working on geochemistry and hydro-geochemistry for the last three years and this book represent an "easy-to-follow" compendium of the most usual problems and situations that you can find on field. The author's explanations to some problems are quite ingenious and help to solve, in a practical way, most of the difficulties that you can find in real natural systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Approach to a Complicated Subject
The authors have managed to take a subject that can be dry and intimidating and make it readable and enjoyable.I have been in the consulting business as a hydrogeologist for 20 years, and found that I needed to review "the basics" due to a career change to Water Resources.I found the book to be well organized, well written, and especially useful were all of the examples provided.I think it would be a very good book for students (those just starting out) and for those, like me, who need to review subjects, such as "aquifer hydraulics."And, the chapter "How to Get Along with Driller's" should be mandatory reading for all students of geology/hydrogeology/engineering.

Product Description
Celebrate Your Mistakes is a "real world" management handbook that gives readers a fresh and inspiring perspective on their business, emplyees, the marketplace, the competition and the world in general. Dedicated to encouraging an "out-of-the-box" mentality, this information-packed book explains why it is important to look closely at failures and-most important-describes what can be learned from them. A collection of thoughts, observations and personal experiences, celebrate Your Mistakes also focuses on the "Pollyanna syndrome," a growing phenomenon in which large companies-blinded by years of success and the harsh realities of an evolving marketplace-feel invincible and refuse to change. Clearly written and insightful, the text explains the value of risk-taking, showing companies how not to be impaired by their own successes and recommending straightforward "how to" strategies for careful self-examination and evaluation. Celebrate Your Mistakes is packed with anecdotes, exercises, practical tips and exmaples-including how to choose a board of directors, case studies of failures, and a simple test to determine if you are indeed a "Pollyanna." Eight easy-to-read chapters are designed to stimulate readers into action and include: Lulled to Sleep by success? Product Description
The author served in two hard-fought campaigns in Asia. From 1943 to 1945 he was an officer in the British-led Indian Army. Shipster served with the 7/2nd Punjab Regiment in the Burma theater of World War II. The Punjabis fought in the fierce close-quarters actions at Arakan and Kohima, and the final advance to Mandalay and Rangoon.

Soldiering had undergone many changes in the five short years before the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. India was now independent and the last British officers and advisers were gone. Shipster had become a company commander in the Middlesex Regiment, a British army unit with a reputation as skilled machine-gunners. The Middlesex were sent from Hong Kong to Korea on short notice to aid U.S. and South Korean forces. The steaming jungles of Shipster’s past experience were now replaced by two years of fighting, often in bitter cold, over a series of bleak hilltops. ... Read more

Product Description
From whatever point of view the character of Eugene Field is seen, genius--rare and quaint presents itself is childlike simplicity. That he was a poet of keen perception, of rare discrimination, all will admit. He was a humorist as delicate and fanciful as Artemus Ward, Mark Twain, Bill Nye, James Whitcomb Riley, Opie Read, or Bret Harte in their happiest moods. Within him ran a poetic vein, capable of being worked in any direction, and from which he could, at will, extract that which his imagination saw and felt most. That he occasionally left the child-world, in which he longed to linger, to wander among the older children of men, where intuitively the hungry listener follows him into his Temple of Mirth, all should rejoice, for those who knew him not, can while away the moments imbibing the genius of his imagination in the poetry and prose here presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power of the Kingdom
The Author, John B Keane, was a Kerryman through and through, and all his books wallow in the heritage of that county of Ireland.(Kerry is known in Ireland as "The Kingdom")Well known for his novels such as the Bodhran Makers and Durango, it is for his plays that Keane will be best remembered.

Celebrated on the stage of the National theatre of Ireland in the 1980's these three plays went on to tour widely round the world, and the Field was made into a powerful film starring Richard Harris, Tom Berenger, John Hurt and Brenda Fricker.

Each is a mixture of innocence and cynicism, earthy humour and godlike aspiration.

Sive, the tale of a beautiful girl sold under the table to an old man.A tale of corrupted innocence and how greed can shatter families.

The Field, a deep rooted story of the importance of land to rural people, how it transcends even family loyalties, but how it finally breaks the hardest of hard men.

Big Maggie, Keane at his best, giving voice to the repressed sexuality of the Irish woman.

Three wonderful plays with themes that transcend the parochial nature of their setting. They have a simplicity and universality that is almost the equivalent of Greek plays such as Antigone or Lysistrata.

It's obvious by his writing that Flores has spent many a day in "the field".One can further glean from his writings that he does so because, like so many of us, the outdoors and hunting is as much food-for-the-soul as it is for dinner table.
I rate this book 5-Stars because if you've been-there, done-that - you can't help but relate to every chapter in this book.
It makes me want to grab the Lab, my son and trusty boat and head to the blind.

I am a 16 year-old young man who has the pleasure and privilage of knowing the author of this remarkable book of hunting experiences. The book has given me a new perspective on hunting and life itself in ways I never expected. It opened up my mind to the hunting experiences that I never had. The way the author wrote in detail about the experiences he had as a young man and an adult touched me a lot.
