4-0 out of 5 stars i need to get back into this book.
i really likethe set up of it, i am just too lazy after a day at work i dont want to LEARN anymore. not the books fault.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book to start with.
This was the first book I picked up when I started to learn German. I've found to to be quite an excellent tool for learning German. There are so many programs and books out there for language learning that it's hard to sift through it all & find something worthwhile. This book is definitely worth buying & reading. There are helpful exercises at the end of each section & I believe it to be well structured. But if you want to play it safe you're always likely to find it at your locallibrary. While I very much recommend this book, I must also say that no one book or program is a reliable source on it's own. Invest in several other tools. I quite enjoy many of Ed Swick's German-learning books & I would also highly recommend the books he's had published in the "Practice makes Perfect" series.

Practice Makes Perfect: German Vocabulary (Practice Makes Perfect Series)

Practice Makes Perfect: German Pronouns and Prepositions (Practice Makes Perfect Series)

After working through this book I very highly suggest checking out Living Language's Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate, & Ultimate German Advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love it!!!!!
I own several German books because I get bored easily. The Everything book is my most recent purchase and I have to say, in every single book I own there is always some "piece of the puzzle" that did not exist in other books. In this book, it was the fact that the author was the FIRST one to say that memorizing the appropriate definite article (the= die, das, der) for every single noun was a rather ridiculous notion. I paid top dollar for this book where I found it but it was worth every penny for the tips on which word endings will ALWAYS belong to a certain definite article. Just knowing that any German word ending in -ung will ALWAYS be feminine (die), etc.was worth its weight in gold!

No, it is not a complete resource, but it is a heck of a companion!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion for German software
Many of the German software out there does not even go over basic grammar usage thinking to model learning language at a young age.For German there are certain rules that make understanding the language essential to learn.I bought this book to learn basic parts of speech. This book broke it down perfectly.I think it was well organized and a must have for learning German. No other book comes close to this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Everything learning German Book
Looking for a book to help me learn to speak and understand German. As I read thru the first few pages I was totally confused.Nothing to actually help me to learn to speak German.I made it thru the lst 30 or so pages and quit. Not what I was looking for ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars German for Dummies
Enjoying this. Easy to use and fun to learn from. I have learned a lot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good instruction, SOooooo boring.
My husband and I are attempting to acquire German as another foreign language. We thought this would be helpful to add to our library. We've been using some online tutoring as well as friends and family, and have a few books by Berlitz on German. As an addition, It is good instruction, but couldn't have been more boring.

I have to admit, I am sorry I bought it, but will keep trying to use it, as it's good to have correct pronunciation. I haven't made it through the first CD yet. This actually de-motivates me. I will update this review when I get a bit further into the study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
As a native English speaker, German seems very easy to learn compared to the Spanish I took in college and the Greek I studied in seminary. The author of "Everything Learning German" does an excellent job of covering the basics of German grammar by relating German language concepts to the principles of English grammar that we (native English speakers) already know. I read through this entire book very quickly and never experienced any frustration of not understanding the topic. I am now going through the book a second time for review and to complete all of the exercises (full answer key is provided). The audio CD that is included with the book is very well done, but you will need more practice hearing, comprehending, and speaking; for that, either Pimsleur's or Michel Thomas's CDs would be a good choice. I also like to repeat many different exercises and examples, and so I am working with "German Grammar Drills" and "German Verb Drills." If you want to learn German, "Everything Learning German" is an excellent place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy learning aid
I am a native English speaker, and I find myself living in Germany for the forseeable future. I wanted to learn completely by immersion, but my progress stalled. I bought this book to assist me and I love it. I sat down and read it through, and before I even did the exercises I understood so much more about German. I had several "Oh yeah! I get it now!" moments. I find the explanations helpful and the grammar sections to be pretty straightforward. And of course, the random facts are interesting and break up the reading nicely. Having said all that, German is my fourth foreign language. I can't really remember the problems I had studying my first foreign language, but this book seems to be on a level helpful to anyone. I'm currently on my third time through it, and as yet have found no faults according to my own learning needs. For the price, I say it's a good gamble; incredibly helpful at best and a useful reference (to augment other texts) at worst. To those just learning a second language, don't give up. The hardest part about learning a language is learning how you personally learn another language best. Once you get the knack (and the appropriate learning aids), they're cake.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Godsend
As a holder of a masters degree in German who has used the language professionaly throughouta liftime, I am well aware of the pitfalls that accompany its learning. They are frequently the reason for aban doning the pursuit of its mastery as unending challenges stifle enthusiasim..This book simplifies the bugaboos of sentence, declension, and case to a remarkable degree and in the process provides comprehensibility to the extent of puttingtheseeminglunattainable within ones immediate grasp. As is ever the case,A time commitment is needed, but rapid progress shold be possible for any student who is willing to spend a relitivly small amount of time when compared to other systems. For the college student fullfilling requirements, the basic knowledge in this book will save much time and effort and encourage further painless pursuit...Just addvocabulary and GO!!!!!
A fine and useful book to anyone with an interest in the German language. ... Read more

Product Description
A founding text of comparative philology, Franz Bopp's Vergleichende Grammatik was originally published in parts, beginning in 1833, and by the 1870s had appeared in three editions in German, as well as in English and French translations. Bopp (1791-1867), Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Grammar at Berlin, set out to prove the relationships between Indo-European languages through detailed description of the grammatical features of Sanskrit compared to those of Zend (Avestan), Greek, Latin, Lithuanian, Gothic and German. This translation (1845-50) of Bopp's first edition gave English-speaking scholars access to his important findings. Translated by Edward Backhouse Eastwick (1814-1883), the multi-lingual diplomat and scholar, and edited by Horace Hayman Wilson (1786-1860), Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford, this work testifies both to Bopp's magisterial research and to Eastwick's extraordinary skill in translation. This volume covers phonology, nominal inflection, adjectives and numerals. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1848 Richard Wagner began what would become the largest stage work of his career, the Ring of the Nibelung. In preparation for the task he composed an overview of the Nibelung myth designed to lead to a drama; he then composed the verse libretto Siegfried's Death. Although he abandoned the idea of a single opera on Siegfried in favor of the huge project that developed out of it in the succeeding years -- the Ring cycle -- he did consider the two early documents important enough to include them in his collected works. The present volume seeks to inform the English-speaking reader in three ways: by providing modern, reliable translations of the two Wagner texts, which are otherwise not available (the German original is provided on facing pages); by furnishing an overview of German scholarship available to Wagner and others working on the Nibelung legend in the first half of the nineteenth century; and by making available a bibliography of further reading. The volume will be useful to students of musicology, to students and historians of myth and legend, and to all Wagnerians interested in the genesis of the Ring cycle. Accessible to the general reader, it maintains scholarly rigor and provides information about materials not available in English. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but schnell?
I've got mixed feelings about this one.On the one hand, there were some tips that did help me on my first trip to Germany for business. On the other hand, don't fall for the promise in the title.I guess there's no harm in a little puffery.Just don't expect to really have a grasp of the basics of the language by reading this book. So, if you are just looking for a book to open the door to the language a crack and possibly help with reading signs, this might be a good choice. If you want more, then keep looking...schnell!
