Product Description

Alone in a room with nothing but an old mirror and a chess set, a young boy anticipates a boring afternoon. But like Alice just before she fell down the rabbit hole – and wound up in Wonderland – this boy is about to embark on a marvellous adventure. Gazing at the mirror, he discovers that the chess pieces (the reflections, not the real ones) are alive! When the White King invites him into the world on the other side, the excitement begins. There, all the rules of the real world are reversed. There, you can have a perfectly reasonable conversation with a perfectly unreasonable chess piece. There, you can meet anyone who’s ever looked into the mirror (even a hundred years ago). This bewildering experience leads to some odd questions: What goes on inside a mirror when no one is looking at it? What if the reflected world is more real than the one where we live? And speaking of our world, how will our hero get back to this side of the mirror?

Join him on his fantastic journey where nothing is more absurd than reason or more important than freedom of imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars scholarly, buta must for all Jane Austen book collectors
This book is a marvelous tool for collectors of Jane Austen's books. Gilson has obviously performed a thorough investigation and produced a polished piece which comes fairly close to being complete. As a collector, I have only rarely come across editions of jane austen's work which Gilson has not detailed in his book. The occassional pictures included within the text were a welcome treat. I had hoped to see more but detailed descriptions painted quite vivid and accurate pictures within my mind.
This book was not intended for light reading. It is scholarly and reference oriented. It is the kind of a book a collector would need at his side constantly, not one to be read from cover to cover and then placed on the shelf.
The only criticism I have of Gilson's work is that he neglects to include any trace of the emotion that one would expect from someone who liked, respected, even loved an author enough to spend so much time on her work.
For myself, I thrill at finding old editions of Jane Austen's books. Thumbing through the leaves of these books is like entering a time machine. It's both an intriguing and surreal experience which has kept me interested for many years. ... Read more

Excerpt: Paul Carrack (born 22 April 1951) is an English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Carrack has been a member of several bands including Ace, Squeeze, Mike + The Mechanics, and Roxy Music, been a session and touring musician for several others, and has enjoyed success as a solo artist as well. His distinctive voice appears on some of his affiliated bands' best-known hits. He was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Carrack's recording career began with the jazz rock band Warm Dust, who released three albums of original material between 1970 and 1972. Carrack was the keyboard player for the band, occasionally playing other instruments, with Les Walker as the lead vocalist. After Warm Dust broke up, Carrack and Warm Dust bassist Tex Comer helped to found the pub rock band Ace. Carrack both wrote and was vocalist on "How Long?", Ace's debut single a hit in both the UK and US in 1975. However, no further Ace recordings enjoyed that same level of popularity. In 1977 Ace disbanded, and Carrack began working as a backing musician for Frankie Miller. Subsequently, he was a member of Roxy Music, playing keyboards on their 1979 reunion album Manifesto. Carrack would also play on the next two Roxy Music albums, but as a session musician, not a band member. Shortly after leaving Roxy Music full time, Carrack issued his first solo album, 1980's Nightbird. It was not a commercial success. In 1981, Glenn Tilbrook recruited Carrack to join Squeeze as a replacement for long-time keyboardist Jools Holland. This new Squeeze line-up achieve...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=505973 ...
