Here we have a generous volume of original Godowsky compositions, including the Java Suite, the grand E minor Piano Sonata and the great Passacaglia (Marc-Andre Hamelin's Hyperion CD containing the latter two works is highly recommended). Excerpt: The Studies on Chopin's Études, by Leopold Godowsky, is a set of 53 arrangements of Chopin's études. (The number of studies is often given as 54, with Op. 25, No. 2 having one study written as a considerably different ossia of another; a similar ossia also exists for one of the studies on Op. 25, No. 3, so the total number of studies can be taken to be 55. In contrast, Godowsky's original numbering scheme runs only to 48.) They are renowned for their technical difficulty: critic Harold C. Schonberg called them "the most impossibly difficult things ever written for the piano." Several of the studies (for example, the study "Ignis Fatuus" on Chopin's Étude in A minor, Op. 10, No. 2) put the original right-hand part into the left hand; several others are for the left hand alone (for example, the study on the "Revolutionary" Étude, transposed to C-sharp minor). Several of the studies even combine two études; the most well known of these, called "Badinage," combines both the G-flat (the "Black Key" Étude of Op. 10 and the "Butterfly" étude of Op. 25). Otherwise, he was self-taught. His career as a concert pianist, which eventually took him to every inhabited continent except Australia, began at age ten. In 1886, after a tour of North America, he returned to Europe, intending to study with Franz Liszt in Weimar. Upon learning of Liszt's death shortly after his return, he traveled instead to Paris, where he was befriended by the composer and pianist Camille Saint-Saëns, who enabled him to make the acquaintance of many leading French musicians. Saint-Saëns even proposed to adopt Godowsky if he would take his surname, an offer which Godowsky declined, much to the older man's displeasure. Godowsky's technique was such that Arthur Rubinstein wrote, "It would take me 500 years to get a mechanism like Godowsky's." However, like Adolf von Henselt, Godowsky was a virtuoso technician plagued by stage fright. Though he didn't avoid the concert platform altogether as Henselt had later done, it was acknowledged that Godowsky's best work was not in public or in the recording studio, but at home.
