Read more

Excerpt: George Percy Grainger (8 July 1882 20 February 1961) was an Australian-born composer, and pianist, who worked under the stage name of Percy Aldridge Grainger. Percy Grainger was born in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His father John Harry Grainger was a successful and talented architect who grew up in France and was educated in a monastery school in Yvetot. He emigrated from London, England in 1876. John Grainger's business partner and best friend was David Mitchell, the father of Nellie Melba. Her father was determined to prevent Nellie from taking up singing as a career and John Grainger is credited with encouraging her singing. He maintained a close friendship with Nellie and later designed her house "Coombe Cottage" in 1912. Percy Grainger's mother, Rose (née Rosa Annie Aldridge; 3 July 1861, Adelaide, South Australia 30 April 1922, New York City), was the daughter of George Aldridge and Sarah Jane Aldridge (née Brown), hoteliers from Adelaide, also of English immigrant stock. Graingers mother contracted syphilis, from her husband, early in the marriage and after the birth of Percy refused to touch him until he was five years old for fear of passing it on to him. When Grainger was aged 11, his father left to visit London and Rose took Percy to live with her parents in Adelaide. He returned to Adelaide but did not rejoin his family. In 1903, while he was touring New Zealand, Rose wrote to Grainger that his father had visited her in Adelaide and was travelling to Rotorua for treatment, warning him not to touch his father if they should meet. On a train to Rotorua, Grainger did run into his father and later wrote about the meeting to a friend. Grainge...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=254507 ... Read more

From the supplier: Australian pianist Percy Grainger typifies the blend of discipline and active physicality represented in society during the early 1900s. The British Victorian culture, represented by self-control and endurance, was giving way to the body-oriented attentiveness of modern mores. Grainger incorporated both aspects, using discipline for music and physical attractiveness for performance.

Excerpt: Ralph Vaughan Williams OM (pronounced ) (12 October 1872 26 August 1958) was an English composer of symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, and film scores. He was also a collector of English folk music and song which influenced his editorial approach to the English Hymnal, beginning in 1904, containing many folk song arrangements set as hymn tunes, in addition to several original compositions. Ralph Vaughan Williams was born on 12 October 1872 in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, where his father, the Revd Arthur Vaughan Williams (the surname Vaughan Williams is an unhyphenated double-barrelled name), was vicar. Following his father's death in 1875 he was taken by his mother, Margaret Susan née Wedgwood (18431937), the great-granddaughter of the potter Josiah Wedgwood, to live with her family at Leith Hill Place, a Wedgwood family home in the North Downs. He was also related to the Darwins, Charles Darwin being a great-uncle. Though born into the privileged intellectual upper middle class, Vaughan Williams never took it for granted and worked all his life for the democratic and egalitarian ideals in which he believed. The Darwin-Wedgwood-Galton family tree, showing Vaughan Williams's relationships to Charles Darwin and Josiah WedgwoodAs a student he had studied piano, "which I never could play, and the violin, which was my musical salvation." After Charterhouse School he attended the Royal College of Mus...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=79448 ... Read more

Excerpt: Edward Gough Whitlam, AC, QC (born 11 July 1916), known as Gough Whitlam (pronounced ), served as the 21st Prime Minister of Australia from 1972 to 1975. He was dismissed as Prime Minister by the Governor-General Sir John Kerr at the climax of the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis; he is the only Prime Minister to have his commission terminated in that manner. Whitlam entered Parliament in 1952, representing the Australian Labor Party (ALP). In 1960 he was elected deputy leader of the ALP and in 1967, after party leader Arthur Calwell retired, he assumed the leadership and became Leader of the Opposition. After narrowly losing the 1969 election, Whitlam led Labor to victory at the 1972 election after 23 years of Liberal-Country Party government. In his time in office, Whitlam and his government implemented a large number of new programs and policy chang...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12454 ... Read more

Product Description
Grainger's extraordinary work, subtitled "music to an imaginary ballet", was prompted by a request from the English conductor Thomas Beecham to compose a ballet score for the Diaghilev company. The commission never materialized, but Grainger nevertheless proceeded to create a his most adventuresome work to date - employing a large orchestra with an expanded percussion section and three pianos, requiring three conductors for coordination. The world premiere for the now imaginary ballet took place in December 1919, with the composer on a piano plus the Chicago Symphony conducted by Frederick Stock. The new, digitally-enhanced study score offered here has been reproduced from the "compressed full score" issued in 1926 under the composer's name by B. Schott's Sohne, Mainz. ... Read more
