Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Rich in titles on English life and social history, this collection spans the world as it was known to eighteenth-century historians and explorers. Titles include a wealth of travel accounts and diaries, histories of nations from throughout the world, and maps and charts of a world that was still being discovered. Students of the War of American Independence will find fascinating accounts from the British side of conflict.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BIOGRAPHY OF HANDEL
Paul Henry Lang (1901-1991) was a Hungarian-American musicologist and music critic. His biography of Handel (1685-1759) was published in 1966, and was probably the "definitive" biography of the time.Lang provides all of the usual biographical details, but even admits that "No one really knows" why Handel left Italy (where he was quite successful) to go to London, where he achieved his most lasting fame.

Lang covers the writing of Handel's most famous work, "The Messiah," in some detail. He also notes that "It is highly significant that Handel never again returned to the Christian-contemplative oratorio."He describes Handel as "An earnest and committed Christian ... largely without denominational and cultic restrictions," who "never publicly affiliated himself with the Anglican Church, although he was a frequent churchgoer."Unlike Bach, Handel "has never appeared as an otherworldly contemplative," and he "avoided Christ as a subject ... for he found Him unrepresentable; in the only Christian devotional work of his maturity, Messiah, he avoided any dramatization."Lang concludes that "Handel's religion was a form of Deism."

Lang also notes that "The problem of Handel's relationship with women has puzzled his biographers for the last two hundred years."Handel was no celibate, as "a number of singers and other women clearly interested Handel more than socially or professionally, although his amorous encounters with them were as carefully screened from view as were his political and religious inclinations."

When in 1752 a "Paralytick Disorder in his head" deprived Handel of his sight," Lang notes that "he still managed to continue playing and directing."

While Lang's biography has probably been superseded by Donald Burrows' Handel (Master Musicians Series,), it is still well-worth reading, and provides a very comprehensive portrait of the composer.
