Anything to help a newbie to stretch my fingers and increase flexibility
I am following the Alfred's adult all in one series to learn to play the piano.There is just so much discipline to learn, and to play well, one really needs to improve the finger's flexibility and speed. This book is the complete collection of the famous Hanon collections.There are minimum notes to help, but it is just a collection of scales.At the end of the day, this is no different from the numerous times that one has to practice a piece to get it just right.Expect your hand muscles to ache!I like this version as it has a spiral bound, which makes it sit well on the piano.Great value!!

Boot camp for the fingers
Reviewers who rate this item as poor because it is not a substitute for playing etudes etc are missing the point. This is not intended to be particularly musical, or to be a practice of every aspect of the art of piano playing. It is the equivalent to stretching or warming up before playing a sport- athletes will go through a number of activities that are not exact replicas of in-game situations.
Rigorous practice of these exercises is invaluable for the beginning or intermediate pianist. Unlike other reviewers I cannot speak to the habits of concert pianists, but I do know that what is appropriate for the professional may not be appropriate for the talented amateur (and vice-versa).

Excellent exercises for piano
I purchased this for my kids ages 8 (playing 3 years) and 10 (playing 5 yrs) to supplement their piano practice.Their teacher thought it was a great addition.

The exercises become more challenging progressing through the book. This version is well printed and opens nicely. There are other editions not printed as well. This book contains all 60 exercises and is a better value then the separate volumes.

This book is not just for a beginner as an advanced player can benefit from the exercises.

Highly Overrated
I am a self-taught pianist (to the horror of piano "snobs" everywhere), who is now pursuing a Bachelor's degree in music (Composition, Vocal Performance & Jazz Studies). In the limited lessons I have taken, this book has been mentioned only once that I recall. I picked it up in order to examine it's usefulness for myself.

Quite honestly, the student could skip directly to the portion on scales, in order to gain proficiency in major & minor scales in all keys, then study any number of the multitude of etudes out there in order to gain more advantage than this book gives.

The worst thing about this book, in my opinion, is that it teaches the student to "check out". The student repeats the exercises to the point of tears, and then turns the page only to find essentially the same exercise in reverse. I don't think that Hanon was the most inventive person ever to walk the earth.

I would recommend the Schaum Fingerpower Level Two Effective Technic for All Piano Methods series instead, since it combines some of the similar exercises, but quickly advances to more etude-type exercises.

Great for technique
I've worked on the first ten of the 60 excercises and I think it's great for working up your speed and technique. I bet later on when I go back to practicing classical pieces I will find amazing results. This book is worth it's price and then some! ... Read more
