Product Description
In this exciting new study of a largely overlooked but nevertheless extremely important figure in American music, author Allen Cohen explores the relationship between theory and practice in the works of Howard Hanson, a prominent twentieth-century composer, conductor, and educator. In Hanson's book Harmonic Materials of Modern Music, he proffered a theory of classification of all possible pitch-class collections in the chromatic scale, showing ways of deriving larger collections from smaller ones, and demonstrating significant relationships among them. This theory anticipated in many ways the standard formulations of music set theory, while also influencing Hanson's own compositions. Following an introduction and biographical overview, Howard Hanson: Theory and Practice summarizes its subject's theoretical writings, examines their usefulness for both musicologists and composers, and analyzes in particular two of Hanson's musical pieces. In this way, Howard Hanson represents an exciting and highly educational look at a man and his work, both unacknowledged for too long. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Hanson's work
This is the first full-scale analytical book (other than a bio-bibliography) to be published on the work of American composer Howard Hanson.

Cohen's book is an excellent and required read for any scholar or serious listener interested in the music and compositional processes of Hanson -- an undervalued and underacknowledged figure in the history of American music. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is the second volume of the history of the Eastman School of Music, beginning in 1932 after George Eastman's death, and ending in 1972 with the resignation of the school's third director, Walter Hendl. This book is very much about Howard Hanson, director of the school from 1924 until his retirement in 1964. After forty years under Hanson's guidance, the Eastman School of Music was a near-perfect reflection of the values and ideals of its long-term director. Under Hanson's leadership, the school became widely known as an institution that welcomed the performer and the scholar, the composer and the educator. It was a school committed to the development of musical leadership, and above all an institution that was thoroughly American in its outlook, method, and goals. In 1945 Howard Hanson spoke of the school as serving a great and noble art. These words provide a vivid picture of Hanson and also accurately describe his vision for the institution which, to this day, bears the unmistakable influence of his forty-year tenure as director. Hanson's successor as director, Walter Hendl, had a far less happy tenure at Eastman. A musician of great talent, his time at the Eastman School of Music ended in considerable controversy amid personal struggle. His eight years as director nonetheless witnessed many new initiatives, positive changes, and important faculty appointments. The record of his leadership, therefore, deserving of attention and gratitude, is recounted in this volume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry and pose at its finest.
What a pleasure to read such writings. It makes you want to "pick" Hanson's brain.
And the art work just added to the pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under the Diamond Pulse
"An artist revolves within a cycle of masterpieces."This aphorism is certainly appropriate with regard to "Under the Diamond Pulse" and Hanson's two previous books of poetry. The author obviously has a love affair with the English language, and this romance has produced a work that cannot fail to reward the reader fortunate enough to browse these charming and attractively-illustrated pages.Dr. Hanson marshals all her talents and knowledge to produce poetry that is variously lyric, playful, and eerie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes me to another place
There is so much meaning in each poem that I find myself going to a new place and thinking about what the poet is describing for me.Sometimes it is very real and other times it is all in my imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars compelling poetry
This is amazing!! Howard Hanson's new work is far and away the best poetry I've read in many a year. Intelligent, compelling, thought provoking and wonderously literate; she delivers her verse with a virtuosity rarely found! You owe it to yourself to read Dr. Hanson's newest book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poet of Poets
There is verse and there is poetry.Howard G. Hanson's work is among the finest poetry written today.Passionate and personal, each poem reaches into the universal nature of human beings while reflecting Howard own life experience. But unlike so much verse being written today, Howard's poetry is masterfully crafted, reflecting an understanding of the language and of poetic forms that evolved from it, creating an art rather than a mere expression. ... Howard Huang’s anime-inspired glamour girls

When photographer Howard Huang began shopping his fashion book around New York in 2002 he had no idea he was about to become the master of urban photography. Back then the Taiwanese immigrant thought "urban girls" were just women who lived in the city, explaining, "English is my second language; I was still learning." Nonetheless, when the editor of Black Men magazine asked if he knew how to shoot sexy women he said, "Sure!" and set about staging the magazine’s voluptuous singers, models and actresses in fantasies inspired by his love of comic books and anime.

His composite photos feature exotic locales, lush interiors, or the neon-washed nighttime streets of Manhattan. His shapely heroines, including singer Jacki-O, actress Vida Guerra and reality TV stars Hoopz, Deelishis and Risky Jones, escape on sleek motorcycles; rob banks with guns drawn and Halliburton cases spilling money; brandish swords like Japanese assassins; conjure fire; hunt big game, and generally kick ass while displaying their own generous posteriors in photos reminiscent of video games. "The trick is to rework an image to enhance my vision, without drawing attention to cheesy Photoshop special effects", says Huang, who studied under digital effects master Michel Tcherevkoff. The result is a unique marriage of the new pictorialism with classic glamour photography, and a look at the little known niche market of African-American and Latina bikini models, collectively known as Urban Girls.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Inner City Girls of Wal-Mart
"I buy Playboy for the articles." Yeah, right. We've heard that story for several generations now, since 1953 when Marilyn Monroe graced the pages. Then in 1955, Betty Page appeared as "Santa's Helper".Well, there were those interviews with Stanley Kubrick, John Lennon, Rush Limbaugh, and Jimmy Carter.Several big name authors got some great exposure for their writing(Ray Bradbury) as well as artists and their work (think LeRoy Neiman).Does anyone wonder how well Hefner's magazine would have sold without the nudity?

Such flimsy excuses as a faux interest in literature and celebrity interviews aren't necessary for Howard Huang's Urban Girls, a new book from Taschen. With the exception of a four page introduction (in three languages) titled, "When Booty Calls", there is no text -- just 245 pages of exotic, erotic, multi-racial Hollywood glamour.2010 marks the thirtieth anniversary for Taschen publishing and this collection of glossy inner city pin-up girls is one of their latest coffee table books.

Dian Hanson edits as has been her responsibility with Taschen since 2001. Hanson's experience includes stints with several well known porn magazines, Oui, Outlaw Biker, Juggs, and Leg Show among others.Together, Huang and Hanson have put together an attention-getting volume filled with images that pay homage to famous pin-ups and poses -- and no nudity. We see alluring women of color re-enacting such famous shots as the Marilyn Monroe Playboy shot with a solid red background, Betty Page in leopard skin and James Bond movie posters.

Over sixtygorgeous models fill the readers', wait scratch that, viewers' eyes in scenes as diverse as dark allies, deserts, jungles, and boudoirs. [One image has the model shopping in what could easily be a Wal-Mart). Whether fantasy or dreamscape, Huang begins most shots in his studio and uses photo editing software (Photoshop) to complete the image with the locale of his desire.Although inspired by the Frank Miller/Robert Rodriquez film, Sin City, I was surprised and a bit disappointed that few if any images in this collection were in black and white.

Urban Girls was released on October 15, 2010 and celebrated with a launch party at the Taschen store in New York City on October 19.Just in time for Christmas!

Excerpt: Merry Mount is an opera in three acts by American composer Howard Hanson; its libretto, by Richard Stokes, is loosely based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "The Maypole of Merry Mount", taken from his Twice Told Tales. Hanson's only opera, it was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and was given its world stage premiere by that company on February 10, 1934; the opera had been heard in concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1933. As the performance took place at a Saturday matinée, it was broadcast nationally as part of the company's weekly radio series, with Milton Cross serving as announcer. The premiere featured Lawrence Tibbett in the central role of Wrestling Bradford, the Puritan minister, with Gladys Swarthout as his betrothed, Plentiful Tewke. Swedish soprano Göta Ljungberg and Canadian tenor Edward Johnson took the roles of the Cavalier lovers, Lady Marigold Sandys and Sir Gower Lackland; Tullio Serafin was on the podium. The opera was performed eight more times during the season, but never returned to the Met's repertory, and subsequent performances have been scarce. Merry Mount is unusual in that its libretto was written without a composer in mind. Stokes had conducted comprehensive research into Puritan fanaticism, sexual obsession, and demonology; he found that it often reached pathological levels, and usually ended in death as a form of punishment, or redemption, for its victims. While he found his title in a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stokes crafted an original libretto which some compared to The Scarlet Letter. Upon completion of the text, Stokes went in search of a composer, finally finding one in Howard Hanson. Hanson, for his part, was new to the composition of opera, although he had already written...
