Product Description

Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) was a distinguished composer, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, and Cappellmeister at the court of August I in Dresden. His tratise, Der General-Bass in der Composition, is one of the most comprehensive sources for the late Baroque practice of figured-bass, or thorough-bass, accompaniment. It is a fund of information about many complex problems confronting musicians in the performance and interpretation of Baroque music, including meters, embellishments, dissonance, particular complications for recitative, and use of the figured bass.

With a judicious combination of translation, interpretation, and commentary George J. Buelow makes Heinichen's famous treatise accessible for contemporary scholars and performers. Buelow provides translations of key sections of the treatise, explains its historical significance, clarifies Heinichen's obscurities, and relates the treatise to other musical theories and practices of the Baroque, including those of Gasparini, Mattheson, and the Bachs. Buelow, one of the world's premier experts on Baroque music, is a professor of musicology at Indiana University.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good summary of important Baroque music theorist
Johann David Heinichen was (along with Johann Mattheson, Johann Gottfried Walther, Kirnberger, and J. J. Fux) one the important music theorists of the late Baroque era.His treatise primarily deals with figured-basstheory, but also reflects a summary of music theory mixed with new ideas ofthe Dresden school.Professor Buelow's book wisely selects importantportions in translation and summarizes some of the parts of lesser interestand importance.Anyone doing research inBaroque music theory should ownthis because it is a treasure trove of material for theorists. It is ascholarly volume that will not appeal to a general audience. ... Chapters: Johann David Heinichen, Heinrich von Brühl, Erdmann Neumeister, Joachim Wilhelm von Brawe,. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Johann David Heinichen (17 April 1683 - 16 July 1729) was a German Baroque composer and music theorist who brought the musical genius of Venice to the court of Augustus the Strong in Dresden. Although Heinichen's music is original, rhythmically exuberant and imaginative, it was inexplicably little known for a long time. Johann David Heinichen was born in the small village of Crössuln, near Weissenfels. His father, Michael Heinichen, had studied music at the celebrated Thomasschule Leipzig associated with the Thomaskirche, served as cantor in Pegau and was pastor of the village church in Crössuln. Johann David also attended Thomasschule Leipzig. There he studied music with Johann Schelle and later received organ and harpsichord lessons with Johann Kuhnau. The future composer Christoph Graupner was also a student of Kuhnau at the time. Heinichen enrolled in 1702 to study law at the University of Leipzig and in 1705-6 qualified as a lawyer (in the early 18th century the law was a favored route for composers; Kuhnau, Graupner and Georg Philipp Telemann were also lawyers). Heinichen practiced law in Weissenfels until 1709. However, Heinichen maintained his interest in music and was concurrently composing operas. In 1710, he published the first edition of his major treatise on the thoroughbass. He went to Italy and spent seven formative years there, mostly in Venice. In 1717, Heinichen became a colleague of Johann Sebastian Bach at the court of Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, then went on to be Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony. His pupils included Johann Georg Pisendel. In 1721, Heinichen married in Weissenfels and the bir...http://booksllc.net/?l=en ... Read more

Excerpt: Athanasius Kircher (16021680) (sometimes erroneously spelled Kirchner) was a 17th century German Jesuit scholar who published around 40 works, most notably in the fields of oriental studies, geology, and medicine. Kircher has been compared to fellow Jesuit Roger Boscovich and to Leonardo da Vinci for his enormous range of interests, and has been honoured with the title "master of a hundred arts". Kircher was the most famous "decipherer" of hieroglyphs of his day, although most of his assumptions and "translations" in this field have since been disproved as nonsensical. However, he did make an early study of Egyptian hieroglyphs, correctly establishing the link between the ancient Egyptian language and the Coptic language, for which he has been considered the founder of Egyptology. He was also fascinated with Sinology, and wrote an encyclopedia of China, in which he noted the early pre...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=93815 ... Read more
