Heller needed a few pointers.
Don't get me wrong.I don't mean that Heller was a trite and unoriginal composer.On the contrary, his left hand parts contain very little of the Alberti bass which abounds in most intermediate piano music.

Rather, Heller overdoes his ideas.#25 and #29 cast the melody in the left hand and arpeggios in the right hand, as in some of the Franz Liszt pieces.That is nice for a while, but Heller runs it in the ground.

Not only the main sections, but the transitional passages are sometimes excessive.In #26, there is a lengthy sequence which reminds me of the sequence in the "1812 Overture."

Also, Heller combines ideas which create a misfit rather than a refreshing contrast.#28 promises to be a quaint and exotic bacharolle. But then Heller ruins it by recasting the melody in the major mode, which does not fit.

Some of Heller's transitions don't even fit very well harmonically.In #17, he uses a German sixth to bring us back to the main theme.He does not prepare us for the German sixth, so it loses its usual poignancy.In #19, the main theme starts on a dominant chord.When it is time to restate the main theme, this creates a problem which Heller is unable to resolve.

Heller seldom considers combining two subjects through motive play, as Burgmuller does. We see this device only once, at the double bar in #19.

In the last piece, we see both faults one and two.Here, he starts with an idea which is rather pleasant at first, but not after he keeps it up for almost two pages.Then he switches to a triplet rhythm which does not fit.

It is obvious that Heller had talent, because #5, #20, and #23 are very nice.It is unfortunate that Heller did not receive better instruction.

A heavily illustrated collection of stories adapted for the younger reader, probably around the double figure range.

Various knightly tales are included, with as usual a larger focus being on the various major Arthurian stories, but there are others included here too.

It would seem to be to be more aimed at boys, too, in particular.

You could perhaps rate it higher if the kid that gets it hasn't seen any of this before.

The illustrations are excellent!
This book has many different stories about different knights.I rented it from the library and I fell in love with it immediately.The pencil sketches are the best that I have ever seen in my entire life!

Quite simply one of the most interesting books I have read.
