Product Description
In March of 1841, Fanny Hensel began to transcribe her experiences of an over yearlong trip to Italy into song and piano pieces.Out of all the composed pieces, she selected 18 that she neatly transcribed to papers of different color, and to which her husband added Vignettes using pencil. The loose leafs were then bound together and a title page indicating "Travel Album 1839 - 1840" was added. The 16th piece, and one of only five songs, "Der Furst vom Berge" (The Lord of the Mountain),was up until this point an unknown piece, and it is believed that this is the only surviving copy.To the simple, nursery rhyme-styled verses, Fanny Hensel added music - the opening notes of which portray an uncanny mood, especially if they are played in the indicated tempo. From here a dramatic ballade-like character unfolds, although the opening leitmotif is repeated, which creates an ambivalent impression which is not intrinsic to the poem of Wilhelm Hensel, but adds a deeper dimension to it. German text. ... Read more

Auszug: Moses Mendelssohn (6 September 1729 (Hebrew calendar 12 Ellul 5489)- 4 January 1786) was a German Jewish philosopher to whose ideas the renaissance of European Jews, Haskalah (the Jewish Enlightenment) is indebted. He has been referred to as the father of Reform Judaism. Born to a poor Jewish family in Dessau and originally destined for a rabbinical career, Mendelssohn educated himself in German thought and literature and from his writings on philosophy and religion came to be regarded as a leading cultural figure of his time by both Germans and Jews. He also established himself as an important figure in the Berlin textile industry, which was the foundation of his family's wealth. Moses Mendelssohn's descendants include the composers Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn and the founders of the Mendelssohn banking house. Moses Mendelssohn was born in Dessau. His father's name was Mendel and he later took the surname Mendelssohn ("Mendel's son"). Mendel Dessau was a poor scribe - a writer of torah scrolls - and his son Moses in his boyhood developed curvature of the spine. His early education was cared for by his father and by the local rabbi, David Fränkel, who besides...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Product Description
Fanny Hensel (nee Mendelssohn Bartholdy) was known in musical circles of 1830's and 40's Berlin primarily for her "Sonntagsmusik" (Sunday Performances). 249 solos pieces to be accompanied by piano remain today, and given the number of surviving works, is an indication that this was her primary medium of composition. Most works remained in private family reserves until they were dedicated to the Mendelssohn-Archive of the State Library of Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage. This marked the "discovery" of Fanny Hensel as a composer. From 1841 up until her death on May 14, 1847, she repeatedly set composition to verses of Eichendorff, both as song and as choral pieces. The verse to the song "Traum" (Dream) was taken from the two poems "Erinnerung" (Recollection) from Eichendorff's collection "Wanderlieder" (Walking Songs) and was most likely composed in 1844. This facsimile is the only know surviving version of the composition. ... Read more

Product Description
At age 16, Fanny Mendelssohn-Bartholdy already had a longing to visit Italy. It would, however, take another 17 years until she could realize her dream. In August of 1839 she, her husband Wilhelm Hensel, and her nine year old son Sebastian left Berlin, Germany. By September they crossed the Stelvio Pass, and after passing through Milan, Venice, and Florence finally reach the Eternal City. As with most travelers of Italy of the time, Rome, the city of artists and painters, the center of Catholicism, and the source of much fascination, was their "true" destination.Fanny Hensel regularly reported her experiences in her letters home. Most of her letters went to her immediate family in Berlin, mainly to her mother Lea Mendelssohn Bartholdy and her sister Rebecca, but some also went to her brothers Paul and Felix in Leipzig, Germany. Fanny remained involved in family discussions through her letters, but also reported generously of her adventures exploring Rome, of her encounters with internationally renowned painters and musicians, and recounted in detail the events of the Roman carnival and religious ceremonies. It became clear through her writings how much her experiences in Rome influenced her and that she left the city a changed person. Her experiences left such an impression on her that her return to the confines of Berlin would be very difficult on her. This work presents - for the first time - the sources in their original form and so helps to close any existing gaps in the life of the artist. German text. ... Read more

Product Description
Fanny Hensel's concerts, which she performed irregularly on Sunday afternoons in her home, were highly regarded in Berlin due to their good programming and the high quality of performance. It was considered an honor to be invited to these very tight-circled events, but they did become more public as the years went by. During the winter months the concerts took place in Fanny Hensel's music room, and in summer months in the enclosed patio. Up until now, very little verifiable information was available about these concerts. However, by piecing together her own notations on these concerts, as well as family letters and third party reports, it is now for the first time possible to gather enough detail to put together an overview of performance dates, programs, and performers, even if particulars still elude us. A thorough introduction to the type and character of these "Sunday Performances," as well as an index of participants precedes the chronicles of performances. Individual reports are reprinted in the appendix. German text. ... Read more

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:ABRAHAM MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY.Abraham Mendelssohn,' the second son of Moses, was destined to add a new and even more brilliant lustre to the name by his son Felix. He himself expressed this by the modest humorous words, ' Formerly I was the son of my father, and now I am the father of my son.' These words show the character of the man. It is true that he stands between the firm adherence to Judaism of Moses and the sincere Christian faith of Felix and Fanny, between the philosophic views of his father and the aesthetic views of his children ; but he was himself a harmonious, independent, vigorous character, and had nothing of the epigon in him.We know little of his youth down to the beginning of the century. In the year 1803 he occupied the office of a cashier in the counting-house of Messrs. Fould, at Paris. Here he probably often talked about his future prospects with his sister Henrietta, in her cosy arbour in the Rue Richer, and in their conversation she very likely often mentioned her intimate friend Leah or Lilla Salomon s as a suitable wife for her brother. Leah's family enjoyed an agreeable social position in Berlin. G. Merkel, who was intimately acquainted with the Salomon family, and kept up a lively correspondence with Leah, after her death in 1842 restored some of the letters to her family, and at the same time gave the following description of her youth :—Leah Salomon. That was her maiden name. Her elder brother had adopted the name of Bartholdy, after the former proprietor of the garden belonging to the family.3 Leah wasnot handsome, but her eloquent black eyes, her sylph-like figure, her gentle, modest behaviour, and the power of her lively conversation, full of accurate judgment and striking but never malicious wit, made her most attractive. She was acq... ... Read more
