5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book regarding Guarneri violins
I bought this book because there is a little in the Wikipedia regarding Guarneri violins. This book has two chapters dedicated to the best violin maker of this family - Guarneri Del Gesu, who is regarded as comparable to Antonio Stradivari. There are not only black and white photos of the violins of different periods, but also some good color photos of the famous Guarneri violins. The appendices contains dimensional information about the Guarneri violins made in different period. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Guarneri violins and the history of the violin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource!
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2560FC2HCUWYR A must for all violin scholars, students and makers.Gives information, text, and shows labels of the different makers so you can identify authentic labels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
recommended by a great luthier friend as a beginner "must read" book. He was totally right!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Violin-Makers of the Guarneri Family
This is a wonderful comprehensive book about the Guarneri violin-makers.Since I own two Guarneri-labeled violins and wanted to know whether either was made by that family, this book answered my questions. The fate of most genuine Guarneri violins is already known(they were destroyed by fire or other means or are owned by private individuals or are in museums). In the case of my two violins, there is a 'fictictious' label (as the authors describe and show in a photo), in both of my violins. That was disappointing to learn but it enabled me to buy a very nice-sounding violin at minimal cost (my second so-called 'Guarnerius') from the late 1770's even though it was apparently not made by the Guarneri family. If you own a violin with a Guarnerius label, it would be quite useful for you to own a copy of this book to determine its authenticity. The enormous and detailed research done by the Hill family makes this book well worth its reasonable price (at least at Amazon.com) where I bought my copy this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential information, but...
I would prefer to have my questions answered concerning this book.I have read this book thoroughly many times;what I wonder is what makes this book "collectible" and worth [price] rather than [price], as no description is given other than "paperback".Thank you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Beginnings of Australian and New Zealand Music
This book is for anyone wanting to research the origins of Western musical culture in the Antipodes, with a close look at "the grandfather of Australian music" the composer and teacher Alfred Hill. Almostforgotten by his countrymen today, author John Mansfield Thompsonacknowledges for the first time in this authoratitive book the importanceof a fascinating life in music lived "down under" far from themore universally known and appreciated cultural mainstreams of Europe andAmerica at the turn of the twentieth century.Hill used enormous personalinfluence and creative resource to initially help found the earlyorchestras and choral societies inAustralia and New Zealand and was arevered teacher and conductor in his own time. Receiving his musicaltraining in Europe at a time when names like Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Griegwere around, he is in some ways the creative figure who brought the flavourof all this music and the culture surrounding it to his antipodean home. An important chapter in the musical history of "down under" foranybody interested in knowing what was going on there musically in theearly part of last century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for violin lovers
I bought the authors' book regarding Guarneri family because this information is not available in Wikipedia. From this book I learned that the authors are expert violin makers. The Guarneri book demonstrated the authors' serious research efforts. This makes me buy this book. As in the Guarneri book, this book has many nice color photos and black/white photos. The discussion about material, construction, and varnish are all very interesting and well explained. The dimension information regarding Strad, Amati and Gurneri violins are informative. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves violin.

5-0 out of 5 stars It remains the definitive text a century later
The style may seem quaint, but if you have spent any time at all reading scholarly works from this time period, you will find that Hill's prose is far from unreadable.By and large, I continue to find Hill's style to be readily approachable after 3 decades worth of repeated readings.

In any case, the prose is not what makes this work invaluable.Like another reviewer stated, you cannot do any study of Stradivari instruments without first consulting Hill, and Hill remains the foundation of all scholarly work concerning Stradivari, even a century later. While not exactly for laymen, nonetheless this book is relatively accessible to those who have only a passing knowledge in stringed instruments. For those more expert, Hill remains the essential starting point. If you have a young violinist in your family, I would recommend this book as a gift.I still have my decades-old book, received one Christmas long long ago, and I am glad that I got it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the essential texts
This is perhaps the most important book ever published relating to the topics of violin making and the unchallenged greatest maker of all times. The Hills are the most respected scholars, ever, of the violin, and this was a landmark publication in 1902 and remains so. Under the quaint language is the information that subsequent scholars have used as the basis of their understanding of Stradivari's work (and stolen for the basis of many of their own articles and books), and almost everything written in the book is still considered accurate--an unprecedented event in violin publishing, where there's much more myth than fact in many books, especially those of the past, many of which are essentially fiction posing as non-fiction. There is simply no reason not to own this book if you are interested in violins.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but very long winded
This is a good book for people who want to learn more about the greatItalian luthier, but it definitely has its flaws. The book was writtenaround the turn of the 20th century and its style is very stilted andconvuluted. I often had the feeling the authors could have conveyed theinformation they give us in two pages in one paragraph. Also, their worshipof anything related to Stradivari gets to be a bit much after awhile.Still, this is the book to turn to for information on this great violinmaker. ... Read more

Product Description
In the nineteenth century, most people assumed that the “modern spirit” and Catholicism, the great “religion of authority,” were irreconcilably opposed. However, some tried to combine the two in a reformed and modernized Catholicism. These efforts, and the reaction of the institutional Church against them, precipitated the Modernist Crisis.

Alfred Loisy (1857–1940) was at the center of this dramatic conflict between advocates and opponents of “modernity.” Loisy believed that his adoption of scientific methods to study the Bible and the history of Christianity necessarily committed him to a campaign to modernize Catholicism as a whole. In this book, Harvey Hill describes the emergence, articulation, and ultimate fate of Loisy’s reform program as he interacted with allies and opponents of his modernizing agenda.

By tracing Loisy’s early intellectual and religious development in more detail than have previous scholars, Hill shows how Loisy self-consciously placed his historical scholarship at the service of a positive reform agenda from the very beginning of his ecclesiastical career and that he viewed this reform agenda as an intrinsic part of his critical work. Drawing on some of Loisy’s unpublished writings and little-known articles, Hill goes on to demonstrate that Loisy’s efforts to reform Catholicism presupposed a new view of the nature and limits of Church authority in relation to the secular state as well as to modern scholarship. Hill uses Loisy’s political views to illustrate the more general challenge to ecclesiastical authority that was, again, an intrinsic part of the modern scientific study of religion as Loisy understood it.

Hill’s interpretation of Loisy and the theology and politics of the scientific study of religion will interest students of Catholic Modernism, the history of modern religion, and the emergence of religious studies as an academic discipline. ... Read more
