Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Symphony: Mathis der Maler (Matthias the Painter) is perhaps the most famous orchestral work of German composer Paul Hindemith. The symphony is based on themes from Hindemith's opera Mathis der Maler, about the painter (in German, "Maler"), Matthias Grünewald (or Neithardt). Hindemith's symphony was written in 1934 before he completed the full opera of Mathis. He was asked by conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler for a new work to perform on an upcoming Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra concert tour and decided to write a symphony using principal themes from the opera as a 'trial run'. The symphony was well received at its first performances, but Furtwängler faced severe criticism from the Nazi government for performing music that seemed to oppose party ideology. Hindemith completed the full opera by 1935 and, because of the political climate, did not see its premiere until 1938 in Zürich, Switzerland. The symphony was premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic under Furtwängler on March 12, 1934. The first American recording of the symphony was released in 1940, conducted by Eugene Ormandy. The symphony has three movements: The movements are related to the opera as follows: Each movement relates to Grünewald's paintings that comprise the Isenheim Altarpiece, which were influenced by the feelings of German peasants toward their oppressive overlords in the 16th century. Hindemith's music draws sharp parallels between the Protestant Reformation and the political strife of his own times. ... Read more

Kapitel: Rudolf Hindemith, Paul-Hindemith-Preis, Hindemith-Institut, Hindemith-Musikzentrum, Paul-Hindemith-Gesellschaft in Berlin, Hindemith-Stiftung, Paul-Hindemith-Preis Der Stadt Hanau. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Paul Hindemith (16 November 1895 - 28 December 1963) was a German composer, violist, violinist, teacher, music theorist and conductor. Born in Hanau, near Frankfurt, Hindemith was taught the violin as a child. He entered Frankfurt's Hoch'sche Konservatorium, where he studied violin with Adolf Rebner, as well as conducting and composition under Arnold Mendelssohn and Bernhard Sekles. At first he supported himself by playing in dance bands and musical-comedy outfits. He became deputy leader of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra in 1914, and was promoted to leader in 1917. He played second violin in the Rebner String Quartet from 1914. In 1921 he founded the Amar Quartet, playing viola, and extensively toured Europe. In 1922, some of his pieces were heard in the International Society for Contemporary Music festival at Salzburg, which first brought him to the attention of an international audience. The following year, he began to work as an organizer of the Donaueschingen Festival, where he programmed works by several avant garde composers, including Anton Webern and Arnold Schoenberg. From 1927 he taught composition at the Berliner Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. In the 1930s he made a visit to Cairo and several visits to Ankara where (at the invitation of Atatürk) he led the task of reorganizing Turkish music education and the early efforts for the establishment of Turkish State Opera and Ballet. Towards the end of the 1930s, he made several tours in America as a viola and viola d'amore soloist. Hindemith's relationship to the Nazis is a complicated one: some condemned his music as "degenerate" (largely on the basis of his early, sexually charged operas such as Sancta Susanna), and in December 1934, during...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Excerpt: Symphony in B for Band was written by Paul Hindemith, an influential German composer known for writing music in a variety of genres, including orchestral, opera, chamber, ballet, vocal and many more. The piece was completed in 1951 and premiered on April 5 of that year by the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" in Washington, D.C. (Morgan 1991,). Not many composers endeavored to write significant pieces for band; there was no demand or market for them while chamber music, symphony orchestras, operas and ballets were so popular in the late 19th century. Arnold Schoenberg and Paul Hindemith were among the first composers to show the public that music written for band, not just orchestra, could be precise, thematic and beautiful. The Symphony in B is often called a 'cornerstone' piece for wind ensemble and is one of the most prominent and widely known pieces composed or arranged for band. What makes Paul Hindemith stand out as a composer for band is his use of the various instruments that comprise a band. Each instrument's Timbre, or sound quality, is different from any other; by changing the instrument playing a melody, the tone color of that melody is different. Hindemith writes the same melody throughout an entire movement with no interval or rhythmic changes, yet it seems like a different melody with each separate set of instruments that play it. The tone color of a melody can also be significantly changed by the number of instruments playing; ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13735882 ... Read more

Excerpt: Joseph-Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875 December 28, 1937) was a French composer of Impressionist music known especially for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects. Much of his piano music, chamber music, vocal music and orchestral music has entered the standard concert repertoire. Ravel's piano compositions, such as Jeux d'eau, Miroirs, Le Tombeau de Couperin and Gaspard de la Nuit, demand considerable virtuosity from the performer, and his orchestral music, including Daphnis et Chloé and his arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, uses a variety of sound and instrumentation very effectively. Ravel is perhaps known best for his orchestral work, Boléro (1928), which he considered trivial and once described as "a piece for orchestra without music." According to SACEM, Ravel's estate earns more royalties than that of any other French musician. According to international copyright law, Ravel's works are public domain since January 1, 2008 in most countries. In France, due to anomalous copyright law extensions to account for the two world wars, they will not enter the public domain until 2015. Birthplace of Maurice Ravel in CiboureRavel was born in the Basque town of Ciboure, France, near Biarritz, close to the border with Spain, during 1875. His mother, Marie Delouart, was of Basque descent and grew up in Madrid, Spain, while his father, Joseph Ravel, was a Swiss inventor and industrialist from French Haute-Savoie. Both were Catholics and they provided a ha...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=48068 ... Read more

Excerpt: George Percy Grainger (8 July 1882 20 February 1961) was an Australian-born composer, and pianist, who worked under the stage name of Percy Aldridge Grainger. Percy Grainger was born in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His father John Harry Grainger was a successful and talented architect who grew up in France and was educated in a monastery school in Yvetot. He emigrated from London, England in 1876. John Grainger's business partner and best friend was David Mitchell, the father of Nellie Melba. Her father was determined to prevent Nellie from taking up singing as a career and John Grainger is credited with encouraging her singing. He maintained a close friendship with Nellie and later designed her house "Coombe Cottage" in 1912. Percy Grainger's mother, Rose (née Rosa Annie Aldridge; 3 July 1861, Adelaide, South Australia 30 April 1922, New York City), was the daughter of George Aldridge and Sarah Jane Aldridge (née Brown), hoteliers from Adelaide, also of English immigrant stock. The temptation of St. Anthony from the Isenheim AltarpieceHindemith wrote the libretto himself, though at the beginning (around 1932) he had considered working with Gottfried Benn. The finishing touches were completed in 1935, by which time performances in Germany had become problematic; nevertheless, for several years Hindemith attempted to secure a performance in Nazi Germany, where he was still living until 1938.
