Flights of Adventure Rocks!
This book rocks! My girlfriend gave it to me because she knows I'm a bit afraid of flying and I read it recently (on the plane). Although there were moments when I couldn't tell if my heart had stopped out of fear or I was just feeling a bit dehydrated that book made the 9 hour flight go by like a 2 hour Spielberg movie!

This book has a bit of history, a lot of adventure, and a ton of heart. If you like reading books about travel, think (Bill Bryson) or if you liked any of J. Maarten Troost's travel books you are going to love Flights of Adventure!

Interesting Ride
If the purpose of a good book is to transport readers to new worlds, Flights of Adventure succeeds many times over, leading a journey from Middle America to the Middle East, Africa, South America, and, ultimately, the South Pole.

Anyone with a bit of the flying bug, or even just a traveling jones, should find something to love about this book, which features ten memoirs, all related to flying but told from very different perspectives.

The stories include the reminiscences of a wing-walking acrobat; a pair of essays by a father and his daughter about his love of flying; and a surreal, humorous account penned by the passenger - some might say "unwitting accomplice" - of a novice pilot who faked his way into soloing an ill-conceived flight over the Sierras in search of a weeklong camping trip/rave party in the desert.

Several chapters offer first-hand accounts of historical events. Marion Stegeman Hodgson writes about her days flying with the WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots), a little-known but important corps of female pilots who flew non-combat missions during World War II under the direction of the US Army Air Forces. Other military and commercial pilots contribute tales of flying in various world hot spots - Somalia, Beirut in 1983, Colombia during the search for notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar - while retired Navy pilot Paul Derocher details the thrills and perils of three years in the world's coldest spot: Antarctica.

The pilots in Antarctica could only fly to the South Pole a few months out of the year, when the temperature "warmed up" to 65 degrees below zero - the temperature below which their aircraft couldn't operate. For those of us who don't consider 65 degrees above zero to be especially warm, the idea of flying, or doing anything for that matter, in a place so cold is difficult to imagine.

One amusing image from the chapter involves a group of curious penguins crowding around an aircraft while the crew scurries aboard and quickly closes the door so the penguins couldn't follow. Apparently, if given half a chance, the flightless birds would love to see what they're missing.

Aviation, History, Adventure, Travel -- Great Reading!
I very much enjoyed this book. I was amazed at the wide variety of story topics and settings, which rendered this a great experience.

You don't have to be a pilot to enjoy this read. I especially liked the fact that women aviators wrote chapters, including the historical account of the WASPs of World War II by Marion Hodgson.

Although the ten stories feature very different topics, locations and voice, each was well written and very interesting.In several of the chapters, pilots were faced with extraordinary risks and I found it fascinating how they worked through these problems to save their lives and their planes.

Even someone who never travels, but wants to, will find the descriptions of far away places appealing. South America, USA, Canada, Antarctica, Africa, Middle East are all included in these stories.One story, written not by a pilot, but by a passenger is incredible. "The Milgram Experiment" will make a great movie. I was reminded of Gene Wilder's comedies as I read this. These guys were lucky to survive.

Buy this book. Read it and pass it on.You will like it.

Flights of Adventure IS Adventure -- read it
There are ten stand-alone stories in this book and any one of them is worth the price of the book.I am interested in airplanes so it is a special book to me, but even someone who hates flying will enjoy the travel and adventure.

Some of these aviators face life and death situations and I find it fascinating how they make decisions and resolve their problems, forcing themselves to be calm and focused.

Canadian wingwalker Carol Pilon shares her ambitions and achievements in a very positive way that should inspire any woman that nothing is impossible.

Marion Stegeman Hodgson, author of "Winning My Wings," was one of the first and few women to fly military aircraft for the US. She relates some fun stories about being a WASP during World War II.Marion and other WASPs will be receiving Congressional Gold Medals in the Spring of 2010 for their unselfish service to the USA.

Other stories were informative and exciting at the same time -- from Antarctica to the hot deserts of Somalia, this book is not only ADVENTURE, it is TRAVEL and should appeal to even the "arm-chair" traveler.

I strongly recommend it to women as well as men.

Very interesting
In "A More Elite Soldier," Chuck Holton described in vivid detail his military training and missions. Interspersed in these accounts, he related the various spiritual lessons he learned on how his training reflected things in the Bible on how we are called to follow Christ. I found the descriptions of his training very interesting and enjoyed his insights on how God trains us for His missions.

I don't recall any bad language. A few parts of the book were written in present tense ('I see' vs 'I saw'), but most was in past tense. I'd recommend this book to Christians who are in the military, who are interested in learning more about the training that Army Rangers go through, or who want to become a "more elite soldier" for God (or at least see a Ranger's perspective on it).

Simply Amazing
I just signed up with 11X Ranger on my contract, but by no means have I gone through any of this yet.Reading this book has been an encouragement and truly an inspiration.
I hope people read this, Ranger, Army, or neither, and are inspired to lead better lives, letting God take the reins and pushing forward, despite all the obstacles on the road.In fact, he basically says that war wounds mean you're in the battle.The hard way is usually the better one.

Anyways, I loved it.I hope others like it as much as I did.Chuck Holton is something else, no doubt.

Gem of a Book
This is a five-star read for what it does:show how life as an elite U.S. Army Ranger is very similar to the life of a dedicated Christian.Holton describes in vivid detail the challenges of the incredible training and physical demands placed upon the Ranger trainee and how that training saves lives on the battlefield.And interspersed throughout the narrative are reminders and illustrations of how living the Christian life also requires one to be an elite soldier.This is a small book, very personal, very well-written for someone who is not a professional writer, and very profound.Certainly, every military man should read this, but so should anyone who is serious about living the Christian life.A very inspiring book.

Life is Combat
Whether you realize it or not, ever since Satan rebelled against God, every human being has arrived on planet earth - a world at war! Good book
I'm currently non-denominational and chose to read this book for two reasons: I served in the same Regiment as Mr. Holton (different time period) and I'm currently at a crossroads in my life concerning the idea of organized religion.Simply stated, I'm a lost sheep amongst the herd.
So I figured maybe I could pick up a few jewels from this book. And I feel I did.
But to the interested reader, be aware that this book is heavy on Army speak, to the point that I think it would take the average reader some time to try and understand what he talks about. I thought his stories were humorous, but then again much of what he says I've done before. So just understand that and further understand it's STILL worth reading.
It's an excellent resource for any soldier who's struggling to find the application of God in his life. I came to a realization yesterday that I'm missing something and oddly enough this book appeared in my life the same evening (odd, huh?). Fortuitous as it was, I read it in a day and firmly believe he deals w/ real-life issues concerning combat, leadership, and most important, spirituality, which in turn makes for a very good, down-to-earth read.
Three stars for the subject it covers; casual, combat-disinterested readers may not enjoy (even though combat isn't the issue he's hinting at--it's really revelations LEARNED from it which is the pot of gold).

Really good read!
I bought and read this book after reading "The Revenge of the Kudzu Debutantes" from my local library. Cathy Holton has mastered the art of writing about strong, intelligent Southern women and the remarkable friendships they form. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Another Winner!!
Ok...just to let you know right off, if you're interested in reading this book, you MUST read 'Revenge of the Kudzu Debutantes' first. There are many references and comments that could seem dead-end if you haven't read the first book.

That said...what a FABULOUS sequel! I loved it just as much as the first. Virginia Redmon is out to seek revenge on her ex daughter-in-law Nita for ruining her sons life (deservidly) and causing him to lose his law practice, which happened to be Virginia's main source of income. Virginia is the type of character you just LOVE to hate. While you're always rooting for Nita to stick-it-to-her, you can't help but look forward to whatever evil plan Virginia will come up with next.

Now, while there were some things that may have seemed a bit far-fetched (like the whole adoption thing, it was quite a stretch for me to believe how Nita figured everything out) the ending was very satisfying. I just love Nita, Lavonne, and Eadie, and I can't wait for Ms. Holton's next novel. Hopefully it'll center around these three fun, martini-loving women again!

Great read-perfect for summer or anytime--

The South Does It Again!
I was afraid this was going to be silly, but it wound up being hilarious with enough of a serious plot for you to care about what happens. Being from the South myself, I can tell you that there was not very much exaggeration about the people or places. There was just a great deal of humor thrown in. I loved it.

Silly, but fun!
I really enjoyed this book. I have to say though, the plot has been done, over and over actually, scorned wives wanting revenge on their awful husbands....but I enjoyed this book so much anyway. It was laugh out loud funny in quite a few places, and once I started it, I could not put it down. I would like to say though, I read it on kinlde and there were a couple of editing goofs, but it didn't matter. I still enjoyed the book so much. I see there is a sequel , off to order it from Amazon. I can't wait to see what happened to all the characters I fell in love with.

IMPOSSIBLE To Put Down!!...
I am so hooked on the Kudzu Debutantes! I can't wait till my library gets the sequel to this book in, 'The Secret Lives of Kudzu Debutantes'. Darn the super slow Georgia library system! Every night I'd go to bed at 9:30 and say to myself '1 hour, just 1 hour of reading, then I'll go to bed'. Ha! 3 hours later I was FORCING myself to put the book down!

If you love southern fiction, cheating husbands and wives who set into motion the perfect revenge plot, then you'll love this book. The only thing that slightly irritated me throughout was Nita's wish-washy attitude towards her marriage. Maybe she'd leave her bully husband Charles, maybe she wouldn't...argh! But other then that, it was perfect. The story moved along at a great pace, and the characters were extremely well developed. I couldn't have been more pleased with the ending, and how everything panned out. I sure hope there are many more Kudzu Debutante books to follow, cause I just love these three women! ... Read more

Task Force Valor Book Three
Meltdown is the third book in the Task Force Valor series. I have been eagerly waiting for it since I read the last book. :) Chuck Holton's fiction and nonfiction reveal his real life experience in the military. Action, suspense, and a little romance make this a hard to put down story for me. I loved it. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

3rd in Task Force Valor series packs a powerful punch
Meltdown by Chuck Holton is the third book in the Task Force Valor series. CIA Agent Mary Walker is heading up her first Spec Ops mission with team members Bobby Sweeney, John Cooper, and Rip Rubio in the Ukraine in the hopes of finding the source of a deadly weapon. While they are undercover, all across America, strikes are made using just that weapon bring the economy and communication to a halt and panicking the entire nation. This was my first read of the Task Force Valor series, but I'm sure it won't be my last! With the action of a James Bond movie and the exciting military story of NCIS, I couldn't put this book down! Holton takes care to keep Christian themes to a minimum, making sure that readers don't feel preached to. There are several plot threads, and he juggles them all with ease, making each character come to life, even those only on the canvas for a few paragraphs. The ending is a terrific twist with a frightening message. A special bonus at the end of the book is Holton's Easter Eggs which will give the reader a whole new appreciation for the series.

MELTDOWN is hard to put down.
I was lucky enough to get MELTDOWN early and have finished reading it.

I just finished reading this latest book of Chuck's. It's the 3rd in the Task Force Valor series and I must say the best of them. It's good as a stand alone book, but if you have not read the first two, you will want to after reading this one.

In this book there is a lot of action that can have a severe impact to USA and rest of North America in some cases. Though it's done with not much violence in comparison to the impact. This alone will give you a real eye opening thought of what you'd do if only ONE of the several things happened and how it could impact your life.

Then the team goes overseas to take care of the root of the violence, and there's quite a bit of action in places you'll probably never go, but have definitely heard about.

When the book ending comes to the violence - and happenings, not what you'd have ever thought was the cause and the causee is not who you'd have thought. It really makes you think.

As to the people of the book, they are people you expect to run into and have a conversation with. Basically - they are real. There's even a situation or two that corresponds to something in my life, even though it's totally different in the book.

At the end, a dash of romance, just a dash - but very classy and all the ladies would like it but not too mushy for the tough guys reading the book.

Through the whole book there is a strong feeling of people of faith, and of one searching for why the faith - that is answered in the end.This is also a clean book that doesn't rely put downs and bad language to give it some spirit.

I think many people here would really enjoy the series, but this book does very well as a stand alone read. (You'll still want to read the others that came before).

An awesome Read

An excellent tool for the Christian man
So many books are just fluff that goes in and out of thought.However, this book was filled with insight and examples of right living that I felt could be put in my pocket and carried around for a while.A fun and informative read.

A Different Title for the Bible.
This book is rather misleading. You will this to be great reading if your a "Bible Thumper". However, if your looking for something written about the military, this is NOT the book.

This is an easy read, good summertime book.The content is light with periods of moderate heaviness, as each main character reflects on their life choices.Some of the plot is predictable, but there are some good twists.Even if you think you know what is going to happen, it is written in a way that makes you want to keep reading it.This is a good book club book, can read in a few days.

Fabulous for forty-something femmes
A quartet of forty-somethings head to the coast in Beach Trip, for a Southern-soul reunion -- shopping, drinking, and the review/reward of life's lessons learned. I read through this, feeling as though I leafed through my high-school yearbooks and "knew" these four.
Cathy Holton crafts a brilliant, bubbly, bracing novel of "sisters" reunited.
Skipping back and forth between 1985 and 2005, the lives and loves of four college friends weave a colorful tale, snapping and fluttering like a beach towel in the wind.
Mel arrives after two failed marriages and a lull in her heretofore-wild-life as a writer, having survived breast cancer, telling no one. Sara keeps tabs on her family -- out of earshot from Mel, her oldest childhood friend, with whom she shares college memories. Great novel with twists and turns
I absolutely loved this book, the first I had read from Cathy Holden.After finishing it, I immediately purchased Secret Lives of the Kudzu Debutantes and Revenge of the Kudzu Debutantes, and was equally pleased with those two reads.Beach Trip is honest with a lot of twists and turns, it's definitely a page turner.I've read the book several times now and it's definitely one of my favorites.

Good Read
Enjoyable read. Impressed with the obvious research that went into the writing of this series.

Kindle Edition Not A Clean Copy
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that there are way too many instances where the translation from print to Kindle got messed up. For example, instead of "little" it would read "littde". Also, the apostrophe got dropped throughout the book. Nevertheless, I look forward to reading more books by these authors.

Allah's Fire
My dad flew airplanes and dropped bombs in WWII. I don't think he ever dropped any bombs but he got injured which is why he got a purple heart. That's why I thought he would like this book because it was about war. At first he said it was very complicated because of speaking of Allah and to many characters. However, he finished the book, which I didn't think he would. He told me it got better the more he read it. I'm not sure I will read it as it's not my kind of book. It arrived in perfect condition. I would buy from this seller again.

My favorite Gayle Roper book
This is my favorite of all of Gayle Roper's works, which is saying something because all her books are excellent.Shortly after finishing this book, news reports exposed real plots frighteningly similar to what had been written.It is an exciting book and one that would appeal to both Christian readers and non-Christians alike.I recommended it to my husband, which says it all, since in 25 years of marriage we've only agreed on a handful of books.I would highly recommend Allah's Fire.

Action-packed story that could've been ripped from the headlines...
With Allah's Fire, Roper and Holton have delivered a novel chock-full of non-stop action and suspense. The story begins by rapidly alternating between sisters Julie and Liz in Beirut, Cooper on the Ivory Coast, and the terrorists planning an attack that will rock all of their lives and test their faith. The paths of each of these individuals are set on a collision course when Julie is kidnapped after barely surviving the terror attack that firebombs a World Bank meeting and kills her husband. Her sister Liz refuses to give up the hope that Julie somehow survived. Cooper has scars of his own, having recently recovered from injuries sustained by a car bomb that sent him to the States. Cooper's team is sent to investigate the bombing in Lebanon and the threat of a new, untraceable explosive. The clock is ticking for Julie -- will Cooper and Liz be able to rescue her in time, and thwart the terrorists' plans?
I have to say -- doesn't this book have a fantastic cover? I love it, and it does a very classy, smart job of conveying the action-packed, adrenaline laced feel of the novel. I also have to add that the editing of this collaborative effort was done extremely well -- Roper was quoted as saying that she wrote the female point of view sections, and Holton the male pov -- and both are seamlessly blended. Holton's military background lends this story an genuine, realistic feel, and adds authenticity to the interaction and relationships between the members of Task Force Valor.
This book is a stellar beginning to what promises to be a fantastic series. The authors do an incredible job of exploring the theme of "faith under fire," and how individuals cope with real questions and struggles about their faith and belief in a good and just God in the midst of horrific, stressful circumstances. If you enjoyed Dee Henderson's Uncommon Heroes series, pick this novel up. I only wish I didn't have to wait until Spring 2007 for the sequel. ... Read more

Not a fiction reader ... even the intricacies of historical fiction? Then stroll down the book store aisle to historical biographies and pick up Woody Holton's "Abigail Adams".One of the reviews I read called this "epic and intimate" and that's a perfect description.Having read so much of John Adams, I was thrilled with a readable, enjoyable walk down the path of an extraordinary woman's life ... both personal and professional. For Abigail Adams was so much more than a wife and mother to two presidents.Self-educated in a time when even well-to-do families thought educating girls was a waste of time; self-taught in business and real estate investments at a time when women were the keepers of home and hearths; intellectually independent from her famous husband and confident enough to express her independent thoughts and decisions to him."Remember the Ladies" has taken on exaggerated proportions over the centuries, but Abigail's exhortation to her husband, then in Philadelphia writing the Declaration of Independence, went on to ask him to "... not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands" and focused her pleas to her husband on actual physical abuse of wives by their husbands for which, in those days, a husband was never held to account. If only history could be taught this way in school, we'd have a lot more kids interested in it.Woody brings Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, to life.She was key force behind John Adams's success and truly a woman ahead of her time.What couldn't Abigail do?

Woody Holton meticulously re-creates what it was like to live during the Revolutionary War and the early years of our country (mid 1700's to early 1800's).

What I found especially inspiring about this book:

**Abigail's belief in her husband.She endured several long (2-3 year) separations from him while he served his country.Their letters during these times give great insight to their daily life.

**Abigail's self-confidence. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind; she also freely gave advice to John on running the country.

**Abigail's accomplishments.She ran several businesses, including an import business, she bought and sold properties, and she made some astute investments.This all during a time when husbands had total control over their wives' assets.

**Abigail's devotion to her family.She was a tireless advocate for education of both men and women. Even after her children were grown and had families of their own, she wanted them living back at Peacefield with her.

**Abigail's faults.Woody presents Abigail as a real person, not some mythical wonderful saintly person.She was jealous, she was controlling, and she was devious.This is what makes her so appealing and real.

I thought the later chapters, starting with 1800's, dragged a bit.They seemed more of a recitation of facts and not as interesting as the earlier years.On the whole, I really enjoyed this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to see what life was like during the Revolutionary War and during the early years of our country.It's especially interesting to read about what life was like for women during this time.

a spellbinding life story
Abigail Adams was all over the place in the Revolutionary era, her life entwining not only with that of her husband John, her son John Quincy Adams, and her daughter-in-law Louisa Catherine Adams, but also with those of Benjamin Franklin, George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings, Mercy Otis Warren, George III and Queen Charlotte, and other famous men and women, some she admired and some she deprecated.In this brisk and engaging new biography, Woody Holton highlights Adams's keen observation of the public events and public figures of her day, but even more importantly, he shines a steady light on the recesses of her private life, her relationships with her sisters and brother, husband, children, and grandchildren, her economic ventures, her daily activities, and her private dreams and values.

Much of Holton's analysis focuses on two intertwined themes: Abigail Adams as economic agent and Abigail Adams as commentator and critic of women's roles in society.Holton convincingly argues that Adams was responsible for managing and shepherding much of the Adams family's wealth and that her investments turned a better profit than her husband's investments did.The final chapter features an intriguing account of Adams's will, which she used to endow granddaughters, nieces, and other female relations (some already married) with modest economic portfolios of their own.Throughout her life, Adams testified to her concern for women's education-- she believed that the revolution in girls' schooling was one of the most important social changes of her lifetime-- and her wish that women might have more of a voice in society.Yet, as Holton notes, she stopped short of being a feminist in the modern sense and always insisted on wives' ultimate subordination to their husbands' judgment, even when that principle came hard for her.

Another A+ book by Woody Holton.I had already read just about everything about John and Abigail Adams, and this book was a pleasure to read.
His earlier book, "Unruly Americans & the Origins of the Constitution," is the best book I've read on the origins of our constitution.

An intriguing read about an intriguing woman
Much emphasis is rightly given to the founding fathers of America such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.But rarely do we get such a detailed glimpse into the homes and personal lives of these men as we do the Adams' in Woody Holton's biography of Abigail Adams.With riveting detail, Holton introduces us to the complex woman who helped shaped America more than perhaps any other of the "founding mothers" through her influence on her husband.

Strong-willed, intelligent and willing to speak her mind, Adams was decades ahead of her time when it came to women's rights and involvement in the everyday affairs of life and politics.Relying heavily on Adams' correspondence between her husband and others, Holton places much emphasis on Adams as an advocate of women's rights.We glimpse the struggles that the Adams family endured through the many long absences of John Adams; but through these struggles we also get to see Abigail's knowledge and fortitude in being able to "keep the home fires burning" as it were.In a culture that frowned on educating women, she was very intelligent, widely read, and very active in promoting the education of her gender.She made financial investments often without the knowledge of her husband - also a cultural taboo.

predictor for one's success in atmospheric sciences
I was trained in a classical program in atmospheric sciences in the sense that the atmosphere is a fluid hence the field being a sub-discipline of fluid mechanics is much emphasized. Holton's book is The Undergraduate Textbook for programs rooted in this understanding, in the US or internationally.
As an undergrad I was told that whether or not I was meant to stay in this field could be predicted by how well I performed in the class teaching Holton.
Now one of my duties is to teach dynamics to undergraduates in atmospheric sciences at a US land-grant university. I am however disappointed to find
out that most students coming to the dynamics class do not have such understanding. There is a tendency for students to forsake the hard-core
atmospheric sciences in favor of the marginal science in broadcasting meteorology. Holton's book is often not tolerated and considered too
'mathematical' (this happens to be the most common excuse students without any originality would use). I really would like to challenge
the students who have shunned (or plan to shun) Holton's book to think twice about how serious they are in pursuing a career in atmospheric
sciences before they make fair judgments about the value this book.

Extraordinarily good text
I have to say I'm not sure if texts on atmospheric dynamics get better than this.Physics books in general, in fact, rarely provide an understanding of phenomena that is so concise, intuitive, and yet mathematically robust.I highly recommend it for children, as a gift, and for pleasure reading.

I also very seriously recommend it as a graduate textbook.Five stars all the way.

it's a very analytic book; it's strongly related to anaysis. all the models are very well explaned; perhaps there is not a good relationship between models and pratical meteorology. phenomena are quite 'hidden' by equations, and only a good experienced physicist has the tools to extract the pratical approach deriving from model behaviours.
however it remains a 'must' for meteorologists.

The most exellent textbook in dynamics of the atmopshere
This book, in my opinion, is the most valuable book on dynamical aspects of the atmosphere insofar, especially from pedagogical point of views. As a foreign student, I understand well Holton's writings. Simple but very concise sentences, no wordy explanations. The first 3 chapters provide you the basic equations used inmeteorology and their common approximations. The next 5 chapters, to me, are the most interesting chapters. They give you wide range of knowledge from boundary layer, synoptic scale phenomena, to instabilities. Equations are of great usefulness because THEY bring into the light physical contents of the dynamics of the atmosphere. To me, any analytical equation and its explicit solution provide us a more complete understanding than numerical models do (because you never know some unpredictable behaviour of numerical solutions). So, try to understand carefully the simplest cases that Holton selected. This gives you a lot of deeper understandings. Chapters 9 to 11 provide the dynamics of meso- to large-scale circulations. You will see why the Hadley circulation descends around 35N in very clear way. However, simple Poisson eqn with the argument of "positive forcing, negative solution" that is applied throughout the text should be paid especial attention because this conclusion is not always true. As a whole, the contents, explanations and derivations will be very well constructed if you see the main point of each section.
To get to the heart of this book, read and derive all the skips in Holton's derivations. The gaps are not too hard to fill out in math but require some thinking. DO ALL OF THE EXERCISES at the end by yourself and you will double your knowledge. For any math-related physical book, transparent derivations are the first thing you should figure out, physical explanations will follow subsequently. From my experience, people tend to skip any chapter what they thought they knew it already. If you apply this method here, you may be in trouble. Read carefully the first 5 chapters, understand approximations used in the each situation. Simply apply equations without judgments of their assumptions will take you into the nightmare.

I give this book 5 stars +. It is really classic....

you can't find an alternative.
when i was a student, i used to think, like many other reviewers, that the book is extremely dry. but now as a researcher in atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, i realise that the book is useful in explaining the most essential and elementary theories behind the dynamics one can encounter in meteorology or climate dynamics.

use the book as a reference and revision of elementary concepts. if you encounter a process you need to understand in your research, this is the book which will tell you the basics. then you go on and learn more from journal articles and your own research.

This book did not satisfy my need of getting aquick necessary information to get on with essential functions of a primary care physician.It is written for a person who already knows the field very clearly but it would confuse a novice in the field.

what every educated person should know about physics
This really is an excellent book.

I believe it's aimed at first year university/college students who require a broad CONCEPTUAL overview of the field of classical & modern physics and how they came to be that way. At over 800 pages it gets chest deep in the key experiments and their interpretation. Basically, shows you the logic behind how we've come to understand the modern technical world starting with the Greeks up to modern day.

The information contained in this work is what every person graduating from a high school physics course should know from a qualitative POV. However, it does not contain the math/problem solving parts of physics required for high school. Overall, book is similar to "Physics for Poets" by March.

small complaints: because it's so thick the spine is easily cracked/broken. Why not divide the book into 2 volumes? Chapter 9 seems out of sequence with preceding material. At the end of chapter 9 the Michelson-Morley diagram for the interferometer is not explained.

Some chapters are too long - # 8 on wave motion for e.g. Also, some material is over-explained but I can live with that.

Very good introduction
I spend most of my hours reading philosophy. So I never had taken any classes in Physics or any Exact Science. Since more and more Im into the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, I keep on being confronted with a Mechanical worldview and bringing back everything to laws. Kants hero in this way was Isaac Newton. So there you go trying to understand ones philosophy that was one of the few who actually was abble to understand Newton. So I more and more thought about reading myself into Pysics. But the problem was that I could not find a proper introduction. So I went to a store in Amsterdam to find something or atleast gain some information. In the end I walked out with this book.

The book has a historical based way of dealing with everything, so they begin in Ancient Greece and work their way up. Since Im mainly interested in the astronomical part and the mechanical side of Physics I did not read the rest, but since that what I read is covering about half of the book. And since that is extremely we'll written (half is about Mechanics and the other half about Atoms) I think that the second part pf the book is very good too.

Anyway if you are a leek in this field. And you want to learn sometging about Physics including the historical development, so not only just the laws and the mathmantical parts of physics, but learn who the poiners really were and how theu came to their thoughts, this book is for you. However if you do want to learn something about the mathmatical side, and go really deep into the abstracts, then I think you beter pass.
