He is credited with being the first person to model the stochastic process now called Brownian motion, which was part of his PhD thesis The Theory of Speculation, (published 1900). His thesis, which discussed the use of Brownian motion to evaluate stock options, is historically the first paper to use advanced mathematics in the study of finance. Thus, Bachelier is considered a pioneer in the study of financial mathematics and stochastic processes. Bachelier was born in Le Havre. His father was a wine merchant and amateur scientist, and the vice-consul of Venezuela at Le Havre. His mother was the daughter of an important banker (who was also a writer of poetry books). Extrait : Arthur Honegger est un compositeur suisse, parisien d'adoption (bien qu'il ait conservé toute sa vie la nationalité suisse), né au Havre le 10 mars 1892 et mort à Paris le 27 novembre 1955. En 1911, deux ans après s'être inscrit au Conservatoire de Zurich, Honegger le quitte pour le Conservatoire de Paris, dans lequel il étudie le violon et rencontre Darius Milhaud et Jacques Ibert. Il est élève de Charles-Marie Widor et Vincent d'Indy. En 1918, il quitte le Conservatoire en ayant déjà composé des mélodies, son premier quatuor et un poème symphonique, Le Chant de Nigamon. Très attaché au renouveau du répertoire, il est influencé par Igor Stravinski, sur lequel il écrit un essai en 1939. Compositeur prolifique et désireux d'illustrer la transformation de la société, notamment par la technique ou le sport, Honegger écrit pour le théâtre, la radio et le cinéma aussi bien que pour la salle de concert : ballets, chansons, concertos, musique de chambre, musiques de films, opéras, oratorios, symphonies. He composed music in genres including art song, solo piano music, chamber music, oratorio, opera, ballet music, and orchestral music. Critic Claude Rostand, in a July 1950 Paris-Presse article, described Poulenc as "half monk, half delinquent" ("le moine et le voyou"), a tag that was to be attached to his name for the rest of his career. Poulenc was born in Paris in 1899. His mother, an amateur pianist, taught him to play and music formed a part of family life. He was a capable pianist and the keyboard dominated his early compositions. He borrowed from his own compositions as well as those of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Camille Saint-Saëns. Later in his life, the loss of close friends, coupled with a pilgrimage to the Black Madonna of Rocamadour, led him to rediscover the Roman Catholic faith and resulted in compositions of a more sombre, austere tone. Poulenc was a member of Les Six, a loose-knit group of young French and Swiss composers (it also included Milhaud, Auric, Durey, Honegger and Tailleferre) who had links with Erik Satie, Jean Hugo and Jean Cocteau. He embraced the Dada movement's techniques, creating melodies that would have challenged what was considered appropriate for Parisian music halls. He was identified with this group before he undertook his first formal musical training, with Charles Koechlin in 1921. En 1921, ce dernier décide de rouvrir son théâtre du Jorat de Mézières mais il lui faut une oeuvre pour commémorer l'évènement. C'est lors d'un voyage aux Indes qu'il décide que sa pièce se déroulera en orient. De retour en Suisse, il écrit ce qui sera plus tard le livret du roi David : un drame en trois parties et 27 tableaux. Il décide aussi de fixer la date de la réouverture, et de la création de l'oeuvre au début du mois de juin 1921. Mais en février de la même année, il n'a toujours pas trouvé de compositeur pour écrire la musique de scène-chose qui était alors importante dans les fêtes de ce type. Sur les recommandations d'Ernest Ansermet et les conseils d'Igor Stravinski, il fit appel à un compositeur suisse peu connu à l'époque : Arthur Honegger.
