Hummel Concerto
This is excellent for trumpet players that want the sheet music, the professional example, and piano accompaniment in order to learn and perform the music with or without the accompaniment. The only criticism is that the piano seems a bit muffled. An interesting sidelite is that the accompaniment portion without the trumpet is at a slower tempo in the Rondo, which is probably beneficial for the novice. ... Read more

Absorbing reading
This wide-ranging and thoroughly researched book looks at Hummel's sometimes adventurous life, personality, his relationships with other people, and his teaching methods, as well as his music. There are numerous accounts of socialisations - ranging from teaching advice and conversations to parties and his family affairs - with other people, including Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, and of course Mozart with whom Hummel studied, so that we learn about his manner of dealing with people - in short, what he was like as a human being. Hummel: good classical repertoire for variety
This book contains a generous amount of Hummel's music, including the three sonatas featured on Stephen Hough's album on Hyperion.
Hummel was highyly regarded in his time and his music played by his contemporaries. Franz Liszt, for example, performed Hummel's piano concertos and even made a piano transcription of Hummel's septet.
After listening to Mr. Hough's CD, I believe the sonatas would be a worthy addition to any pianist's repertoire. They are also a nice departure from the standard classical repertoire (Beethoven and Mozart)and add a freshness to the piano recital. ... Read more
