Excerpt: Haukur Tómasson (born 1960) is an Icelandic composer. He has a Masters degree from the University of California, San Diego. He has also attended the Reykjavík College of Music, Musikhochschule Köln and Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam. His works include six orchestral pieces, three concertos and the chamber opera Gudruns 4th Song, for which he was awarded the 2004 Nordic Council Music Prize. His orchestral piece Strati won the Icelandic National Broadcasting System Music Prize in 1993. Other prizes include the 1996 Bröste Optimism Prize and the 1998 Icelandic Music Award for Gudrun's 4th Song. His composition Saga (Fabella) for ensemble won the State Radio's 70th anniversary competition in 2000. His music is energetic, scintillating and vibrant, combining musical imagination and technical brilliance, with unusual instrumental combinations producing remarkable colourful and complex sounds. His earliest works (Octette and Eco del passato) used Fibonacci numbers to determine the intervals and durations. Later works such as Spiral, Strati and Offspring use a different approach based on his so-called "spiral technique". He also started to use Icelandic folk material in his compositions in the late 1990s. His music is recorded on BIS Records, 12 Tónar and ITM. The following list is from Íslensk tónverkamiðstöð: ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5236823 ... Read more

Excerpt: Steven Adler (born January 22, 1965, Cleveland, Ohio) is an American rock drummer. He is most famous for his tenure as a member of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he performed and recorded from 1985 to 1990. He is currently the drummer for his own project titled Adler's Appetite. Adler was born into the Jewish faith and has some Icelandic heritage. Adler moved to Los Angeles, California, with his mother, Deanna, and older brother Kenny, as a young child. His mother re-married to Melvin Adler and had another child, Jamie. Steven's younger brother Jamie is a booking agent for such hip-hop acts as Bone Thugs N' Harmony and Tyrese. Steven's nephew, Max, is also involved in the entertainment business producing stage-shows in Las Vegas and several reality television shows. Adler met future Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash at the age of 12. The two attended the same junior high school in California and when Adler had a skateboarding accident, Slash stopped to help him. The two became fast friends, and as Slash took up guitar, Adler gave up the guitar himself and took up drums, in order to form a band (albeit missing some components), Road Crew. Following the breakup of Road Crew, both Adler and Slash tried out for local glam metal group London. Slash and Adler met their future Guns N' Roses bandmates when they placed an advertisement in the Los Angeles Times searching for a bassist for their band. Duff McKagan responded to the ad, and later worked with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in Hollywood Rose, who Slash had originally auditioned for, before merging with L.A. Guns (Rob Gardner, Tracii Guns and Ole Beich) to create Guns N' Roses. Eventually the L.A. Guns members departed the group and were replaced by Slash, McKagan and Adler in what is n... Auszug: Jón Leifs (May 1, 1899 - July 30, 1968), was an Icelandic composer. Leifs was born in Sólheimar. He left Iceland in 1916 to study in Germany at the Leipzig Conservatory. He graduated in 1921 having studied piano, and then devoted his time to conducting and composing. He became successful as a conductor, and also as a writer. He married Jewish pianist Annie Riethof. They had two daughters, Snót and Líf, and lived in Wernigerode and subsequently in Baden-Baden. His family was harassed by the Nazis. In 1944 he moved to Sweden, and in 1945 he moved back to Iceland. After returning to Iceland he eventually divorced his wife. One of his daughters, Líf, drowned in a swimming accident off the coast of Sweden, and he wrote his string quartet Vita et Mors in her memory. Most of his works are about Icelandic natural phenomena. In the piece Hekla he depicts the eruption of the volcano Hekla which he witnessed. Dettifoss (Op. 57) was inspired by the Dettifoss waterfall, the most powerful in Europe. In the Saga Symphony he musically portrays five characters of famous Icelandic sagas. His last work, Consolation, Intermezzo for string orchestra was written as he was dying. He died of lung cancer in Reykjavík in 1968. Leifs and his wife are the subjects of the film Tears of Stone / Tár úr steini (1995), directed by the Icelandic director Hilmar Oddsson. Leif's works include: scored for: flute, piccolo, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons; a pair of horns, trumpets and trombones, tuba; 6 lurs, timpani, percussion, strings ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ...
