Product Description
Letters of Franz Liszt, Volume 1- "From Paris to Rome: Years of Travel as a Virtuoso,"

Franz Liszt (October 22, 1811 – July 31, 1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher. Liszt became renowned throughout Europe for his great skill as a performer during the 19th century. He is said to have been the most technically advanced and perhaps greatest pianist of all time. He was also an important and influential composer, a notable piano teacher, a conductor who contributed significantly to the modern development of the art, and a benefactor to other composers and performers, notably Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg and Alexander Borodin. As a composer, Liszt was one of the most prominent representatives of the "Neudeutsche Schule" ("New German School"). He left behind a huge and diverse body of work, in which he influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated some 20th-century ideas and trends. Some of his most notable contributions were the invention of the symphonic poem, developing the concept of thematic transformation as part of his experiments in musical form and making radical departures in harmony. - Wikipedia ... Product Description
This Companion provides an up-to-date view of the music of Franz Liszt, its contemporary context and performance practice, written by some of the leading specialists in the field of nineteenth-century music studies. Although a core of Liszt’s piano music has always maintained a firm hold on the repertoire, his output was so vast, influential and multi-faceted that scholarship too has taken some time to assimilate his achievement. This book offers students and music lovers some of the latest views in an accessible form. Katharine Ellis, Alexander Rehding and James Deaville present the biographical and intellectual aspects of Liszt’s legacy, Kenneth Hamilton, James Baker and Anna Celenza give a detailed account of Liszt’s piano music - including approaches to performance - Monika Hennemann discusses Liszt’s Lieder, and Reeves Shulstad and Dolores Pesce survey his orchestral and choral music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
This book is the finest ever made of any composer. It is simply a "must-have" for anyone interested in Liszt, the piano, and classical music. All the photographs, illustrations and intriguing text provided by Ernst Burger make this book a fantastic journey through the life of the great Franz Liszt and offers good insight into his world and of many of his contemporaries.
Knowing this book has been out of print for several years, I am glad to have obtained a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very much worth the wait indeed!
At a mere four months wait for my copy, I feel lucky.( I demand a reprint! )It is everything James Harrington has it written out to be. Simply and utterly impressive. No finer treatment of any person of note, could be granted than at the hands of author Ernst Burger. He writes,"Liszt was rare among musicians in that he was receptive to every aspect ofart..." It is readily apparent the same could be said of Burger as well. Hisgrasp of the art and the physical world of Liszt's time, as well as aprofound appreciation of the music, make this presentation truly in depthand a sheer pleasure to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for . . .
It took Amazon.com's Out of Print service over a year to find me a copy of this fabulous out of print book.It was in perfect condition and over 30% less than the original list price. The format of this book finds the yearin Liszt's life at the top of every page.At the beginning of each newyear the left most column has notable events in Liszt's life while thefacing page, right most column has a list of works composed. In the middleare pictures, reprints of old scores, letters, articles, programs, drawnings, etc. all cross-referenced and footnoted.Meticulous scholarshipand a myriad of fascinating items make this book indispensible to anyoneinterested in Liszt or his times. ... Product Description
Franz Liszt has become for music historians the archetypical genius--able to upstage such titans as Chopin and Thalberg on the piano, then moving with ease into composition and effortlessly traveling outside the boundaries of his age with wildly original music. Such a figure will always be difficult to evaluate and thus this comprehensive bibliography and guide will be all the more valuable for student and scholar. ... Read more
