Thoughts Beyond Measure
This pocket-style book written in 1959 contains two short inspirational, philosophical and theological thoughts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.King begins his introspection by revealing his answer to the question, What is Man?He follows this with his thoughts on the three dimensions of a complete life: length, breadth and height.Naturally, both points are deeply rooted in theology but you feel as if each is just a brief introduction to a much larger context.

i have the greatest respect for Dr. King. i expected this book to take a philosophical view towards measuring a man--- a philosophical view that emphasizes more on a certain methodism that values reason over passion. now, i understand Dr. King is a preacher and strongly believes in christianity. this book is a sermon. therefore, as someone who accepts christianity but not really endorses it to visit the church every sunday, i wouldn't have bought this book if i knew what perspective it would take. so this book is an excellent measure of a man, but it would be more preferable if it takes a different central figure other than God to measure a man. at least to me. its a very thin book by the way, more like a long essay. ... Great introduction
This is a great book for an introduction to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for my 11 and 10 year old.

A history of the sacrifice that led to the United States being poised to elect a black man president
Last night, my wife Kathy and I watched the second debate in the United States 2008 presidential election and there were some black people in the audience. When one of the older black people walked up to Barack Obama after it was over and had their picture taken with him, I turned to Kathy and said, "Just think what she must be thinking, she is old enough to remember segregation and now it looks like a black man will be president."
Young people are heavily favoring Obama, yet they really do not know much about how in the recent past it was difficult to impossible for black people to vote or even execute their rights. This book, written for the person in late elementary school, is a brief yet reasonably thorough explanation of the plight of blacks and the civil rights movement. This movement was much later coming that it should have been; yet when it did it was unstoppable. As is made clear in this book, not even the pain of death was enough to keep the dedicated people from marching and speaking out against the ills of racism.
Now that the country is poised to elect Barack Obama president, we can look at it with pride. However, we must never forget the pain and suffering that was endured in getting to this point, which makes this book so valuable as a historical retrospective on how we got here.

This is a perfect read for those middle grade elementary school students. It has a just-right balance of text, information about ML King and illustrations.

A great book about a great man!
Martin Luther King Made the Black and white people be together and I wish I was there to help Martin Luther King. I wish I could of met him. When I was reading this , it felt like if I was there and seeing white people hurting black people's feelings. If I was one of the black people hearing the insults I would try to change it like Martin Luther King. I would recommend this book to all people so they could learn about his changes.

I like this book because I wonder about if I were there, would I have tried to help the black people? I know I would have.

Nice collection of Luther's writings
It's a great collection of Martin Luther's writing. The only problem with the product is that the CD-ROM isn't Mac compatible. I bought it for a class so I didn't really have a choice, but being a Mac user I was disappointed that once again the Mac users are ignored by the academic world.

Too Much Translator's Opinion
Mueller, the translator, added words and phrases in parenthesis which most often distort the meaning of the underlying sentence as if he knew better what Luther intended.Readable if you first go through and black out all his additions.

Luther's Roman Commentary
It is a good book for the price as the author wqrites this is an abridged work and does not include all Luther had to say about the book of Romans. It is however an affordable book that is conscise and capture the main points on Luther's commentary on Romans.

Absolutely necessary commentary for Romans
Really good and heartfelt exposition on Romans.Can be going due to the old translation, but worth the effort.

Digest of Reformation's most important Sources
This `Commentary on Romans' by the great Reformation leader, Martin Luther needs three major caveats noted to potential readers.

The first and more important caveat is that this is a `Reader's Digest' version of Luther's original work on Romans, which would easily fill two sizable hardcover volumes, just as his currently available full commentary on the much smaller Epistle to the Galatians. As translator J. Theodore Mueller notes in his Foreword, ' ... this popular and abridged edition seeks only to acquaint the average Christian reader with the fundamentals of Luther's evangelical teachings.'

This gloss brings up a second important caveat. Luther saw Paul's epistles through a very carefully focused pair of glasses, which tended to distort just a bit both the way in which Paul saw his contemporary `Second Temple' Jews and the most important of Paul's lessons. Paul was and still is the leading apostle in the theology of Reformation churches due to his strong emphasis on the faith as the sole currency to achieving God's grace. As I am just discovering in my own study of Romans with modern sources, Paul had much more to offer.

The third major concern is the fact that this work is based on Luther's lectures in 1515, two years before the momentous '95 Theses' which initiated the events leading to the Protestant Reformation. That means Luther continued to think about and write about Paul's Epistles for another 30 years, including his eminently important comments prefacing his translation of the Bible into German.

Therefore, this volume should be taken neither as a scholarly study of Luther's works nor as a totally reliable guide to the thoughts of Paul the Apostle. This volume is a condensed introduction to what Luther thought about Romans in 1515. Therefore, it should always be used in conjunction with a modern commentary by, for example N. T. Wright in `The New Interpreter's Bible' or the excellent treatment of the modern Protestant point of view, `Commentary on Romans' by Ernst Kasemann.

The other side of the coin is that Martin Luther's opinions on the text show much less `political correctness' than may be restraining many modern writers. Luther rails against sins of the flesh with a passion one rarely sees today, so that he harmonizes well with Paul's passion on the subject. Thus, this may be a fair antidote to scholarly sterility that may soften too much an appreciation of the Apostle's emotions. Luther and Paul are certainly kindred spirits in many, if not all regards. (Paul is probably not, unlike Augustine and Luther, haunted constantly by doubts and needs for reassurance).

If you don't have access to or patience for Luther's complete work on Romans, this is a worthy substitute and accompaniment to modern texts.

The book effectively integrates a history of King with leadership
principles . . . along the way, there's much detail on the Civil
Rights movement of the late 1950s and the 1960s.

In particular, I liked how Phillips used the Montgomery bus boycott
to draw out these five leadership principles:

1. Set goals and create a plan of action.
2. Create a new formal alliance.
3. Involve the people.
4. Seek dialogue and negotiation.
5. Innovate.

In addition, ON LEADERSHIP got me to revisit this classic King quote:
" A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder
of consensus."

If you're interested in the subject of leadership, you'll find this
book by Phillips has much to offer . . . it will also serve as
an excellent introduction to King's life--particularly for any readers not old
enough to have known about his greatness.

Biographical look at Martin Luther King, Jr.
This review is on the audio book of:Martin Luther King, Jr., on Leadership: Inspiration and Wisdom for Challenging Times. Author Donald T. Phillips offers listeners both a biographical look at Martin Luther King, Jr. and a look a King's leadership style.

Listeners will be touched by King's life. The man was peaceful, strong and courageous. However, he struck fear and hatred in the hearts of his enemies. I'm not sure I truly understood the significance of King's speeches or the man.

I believe that God has a plan for each of our lives. It is obvious when studying King the truth in that belief. God had a plan for King's life and King knew it.
King was a man that inspired others regardless of their race.

Few have captured King in the way Phillip has. He seems to peel off the layers and reveal the true man. Well done Mr. Phillips.

Another great book for another great man!
I have enjoyed all of the "On Leadership" books from Phillips, but this one actually made me tear up at times. A wonderful book, and I hope every person who wants to DO something reads it! Thank you Mr. Phillips for writing it!

Big Words, Best Book on MLKjr
Martin's Big Words is a book that every family ought to own.It's the best introduction to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that we have come across, something appropriate for even four or five-year-olds.

The illustrations are simply breathtaking, the perfect accompaniment to the simple, direct words.Tracing King's life from childhood, with truth and honesty, children are able to understand the basics of this hero of the civil rights movement.From the first read, my children understood the difficulty of his task, and also started asking hard questions.

If you are afraid of hard questions, I guess this book isn't for you.But I'd encourage you to embrace them.It can be hard to talk about hate, prejudice, why the police weren't always the good guys.However, I have also been able to have beautiful, hopeful discussions with my children about these issues as well.

Postive Book
In Martin's Big Words, the author discusses MLK's life as a young boy and how his parent's positive influence encourage him to be the man he became. The author tells the reader about Martin's life and the other people he studied that influenced his positive mission. The book touches on the beginning of how the Civil Rights Movement began. The illustrations help show how people fought for their rights; giving the reader a better perspective of the past. The author ends the book leaving a positive message about MLK and the changes that came after his departure.
Throughout the book I found the word choice, colors, and pictures were good for the direction the author was thinking as he wrote. I would defiantly read this book to my class. The book is informative to a certain point, because it expresses Martin's actions and words that were important during the Civil Rights Movement. For children who are at the elementary level they can grasp the ideas better than handing them a history book that would be found at the middle or high school level.I think this book has great morals. The author talks about Martin as a young child and how he succeeded into being something great even if the job doesn't pay a lot. The author tells the reader how Martin uses positive words over the negative. At the very end, the author adds important dates throughout the Civil Rights Movement and related sources. Teachers and parents can use these to expand on teaching children in this subject area of history and English.

I am a 2nd grader who just finished reading this book. I thought this book was inspirational because it taught me about the past. I was proud to see that Dr. King was able to stand up to segregation. We recently did a play in our class about standing up for our rights and this book showed how Dr. Martin Luther King did just that. It's about how he made the city be nice to black people. He was a pastor. My favorite was when he died and had a funeral. My favorite part was when he died and had a funeral. A Favorite in our School
Dr. King is a favorite hero among elementary school children.This book is the perfect way to introduce them to the life and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The language is simple and the illustrations are interesting. I've found that although students know the "Happy Birthday" song, they aren't aware that Stevie Wonder wrote the song as a tribute to Dr. King.We always end our read aloud by singing a chorus of the song.

An effective picture book on an important American leader
"Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King" fills a need for effective picture books for young readers about this important American leader. The scratchboard illustrations, although unusual for this format, create a vibrancy that enhances the text.

This narrative revolves around the statement: "The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., is famous because he helped our country change some of its laws." Then in simple language it goes on to explain some of the laws he helped change.

It goes on to say, "Poor people, rich people, white people, black people, and people from all around the world listened when Martin Luther King spoke." Of course, there is mention of his 1963 speech in Washington, D.C., where his "dream was that people everywhere would learn to live together without being mean to one another."

This is an excellent book to read aloud to younger students, although as a school librarian, I have seen it used effectively up to the 5th grade (like another reviewer here). Another good title that covers some of the same territory for young readers is "A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr.," by David A. Adler.

This is a great book. It will endow the reader with a better understanding of the Protestant Reformation, how corrupt the Roman Catholic Church really was. And it explains who many Christians since John Wycliffe believed the Antichrist was (is?).

The ubiquitous volume
Every seminarian should own this - I say should not to make you rush out and buy this volume, but because your professors likely already have.While these are not perhaps the cream of Luther's Works, this little Fortress volume contains two treatises good for railing against Rome, and the Freedom of a Christian, which is a better catechism text than the catechism, despite the fact that everyone thinks they hate it.(But who likes the catechism, either?)It's the fact that these three come from 1520-1521 that makes them important - they are among the first of the writings of Luther's "new perspective".Read the Smalcald Articles in light of the first two treatises, it helps.

Three Treatises. Martin Luther.
Yes, Luther had his faults; in all honesty they are well documented and cannot be denied. But if we proceed in this honest assessment, we must admit that if only a small fraction of his case against the Roman papacy were true, it would be a very damning case indeed, enough to forever impeach Rome's claim as the one "true" church and the pope's claim to be Christ's 'stand-in', the 'Vicar of Christ'. After those aspects of Luther's case that can be assailed as being inaccurate are whittled off, what remains is the lion's share of his expositions, a well-argued prosecution of the papal office and its corruption of the western church. The most important of Luther's essays stand with the greatest of Christian commentaries and expositions.

Yes, there are many other voices of Christian (Eastern, Protestant, and Roman) consequence, down to our present day, but in terms of historical impact, few stand with Luther. This volume from Fortress Press, includes English translations of three seminal essays produced in 1520: To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation, The Babylonian Captivity of the Church, and, The Freedom of a Christian. They represent the heart of Luther's case against the Roman papacy, and the heart of the Reformation. His case cites many specific points, is filled with both reverence for God and scripture, and contempt for the self-aggrandizement, politicking, callous money-grubbing, and arrogance of the papal office holders and papist "flatterers":

"If the pope in Rome can grant dispensations and scandalously sell them for money, then every priest may give the same dispensations without price and for the salvation of souls. Would to God that every priest were able to do and remit without payment all those things we have to pay for at Rome, such as indulgences, letters of indulgence, butter letters, mass letters, and all the rest of the confessionalia and skullduggery at Rome and free us from that golden noose the [papal] canon law, by which the poor people are deceived and cheated of their money! If the pope has the right to sell his noose of gold and his spiritual snares (I ought to say 'law') for money, then a priest certainly has more right to tear these nooses and snares apart, and for God's sake tread them underfoot. But if the priest does not have this right, neither has the pope the right to sell them at his disgraceful fair. . . But they have bound us with their canon law and robbed us of our rights so that we have to buy them back again with money. . ."

It is inescapable that many Roman Catholics will continue to find Luther offensive, for the obvious reason that he accuses the popes of his time of extortion and theft, heresy, quickness to repression and violence, lies, arrogance, conspiracy and racketeering, political entanglements and manipulation, influence peddling, disdain for Christ's example and teachings, love of material wealth, disdain for love itself, and so forth. He often uses the name "Avarice" in reference to the papal office. He says that if the pope is not the Anti-Christ, then the Anti-Christ need not be feared, as no one could more damage the world's understanding of Christ's teaching than had the Roman popes. Not the kind of accusations that Catholics bound to doctrines of papal supremacy can comfortably countenance! But it is also inescapable that Luther writes as one expecting that his readers will recognize truth in what he writes, and that indeed a large number did. These essays are among the most necessarily scathing and significant of the story of Christendom. They deserve the attention of all Christians.

Since no one has mention them, here are the three essential Lutheran texts:
1.An Open Letter to the Christian Nobility
2.The Babylonian Captivity of the Church . . . Luther's reorganization of the sacramental system
3.The Freedom of a Christian
Luther takes on the Roman Catholic Church and none too kindly.Important to both the history of Christianity and the history of Germany -- and of course to all practicing Lutherans.It might even be eye-opening to many Lutherans today who only know of Luther from his catechism.

Even as a Catholic, I appreciate this work
Being that these three works were the foundation of Luther's reformation(if you dont count the 95 Theses), they are important for any Christian to read. Personally, as a Catholic, these dont offend me. They address very real issues of the time. Do I think they are totally right and justified to cause millions to break with the Church? Not really. But then again, it was a much different scenario at the time. Any Catholic or Protestant who wants a firm grasp on their roots needs to read these. ... Read more

The Dream Lives On for All of Humanity
This is an extraordinary book, sharing the human struggles for freedom from oppression, details of "how" to proceed in order for positive change to prevail, and cites incredible examples to teach our children until humanity is viewed equally, rather than judged unethically.

This book teaches children that there are ways to change the world without violence and it also shows how resilient you have to be to see change occur in your lifetime. What is really striking about this book is the stories of how students endured such hatred in order to achieve their goals.

Amy Pastan also tells the story of how Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote his famous "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." In this letter he wrote: " Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

There are inspiring stories of great bravery as children take to the streets to protest and demand their freedom. As men march with bold signs that read: "I Am a Man," demonstrators start to demand to be respected as a human being.

On the last few pages, the author explains why Martin Luther King's birthday has become an occasion where students learn about civil rights and why many dedicate the day to spiritual reflection or sponsor activities that promote change.

A Fantastic Read
The authors of this text did an excellent job in comparing and contrasting Dr. King and Malcolm X. The text used many letters from both leaders, and showed how their ideals evolved throughout their lives.

Malcolm and Martin
This book presents the differences between arguably the two most famous civil rights activists of the fifties and sixties, as well as showing the convergence between their ideas and ideals toward the end of thier respective lives. It is readable, succinct and thorough. I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who will be teaching this period in history to middle or high school students.

My daughter loves this book
My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

DEFECTIVE on COMPUTERS - Do NOT Purchase!
SHAME on those responsible for producing and selling this fraudulent product!

Never has it been more important for Dr. King's words to be widely heard. This package should have facilitated that process. Instead, it impedes the process through its defectiveness.

To make a long story short, these audio CDs do not operate properly on a computer (or, therefore, on an iPod), which is presumably how most people would in 2010 and beyond try to listen to it. This was first reported (again, long story short) AT LEAST eight years ago. This box set's producers, therefore, had plenty of opportunities to correct the technical problems before releasing this version.

But the producers chose NOT to correct the technical problems.

Shame! The material here is too important and too worthwhile for so blatant a mistake in the first place. But to repackage and re-sell a known defect in the presentation of truly precious content is disgusting. Beneath contempt, really.

mlk's words of inspiration
Every family, especially with young children, should have this little book in its home. I thought and read a lot about Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. and his ideas. Still, as I read this little book, I could not stop wondering what I would have been able to accomplish had I read the messages of this book when I was younger.Regrets aside, I feel so calmly inspired to do something good for someone else!After all, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, `What are you doing for others?' . " Moreover, to serve others "you only need a heart full of grace, [and] a soul generated by love" (p. 17).

All seven chapters of the book are insightful, and the introduction and chronology of events before and after the death of Dr. King, Jr are equally valuable reading. It is hard, very hard ,to readthe`I've been to the mountain top'and `I have a dream' speeches without a lump of sadness in one's throat.But in reading the "Proclamation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, 1986" as a national public holiday by President Ronald Reagan , one gets a sense that America has finally turned into a more inclusive direction for all its people.The election of Barrack Obama to the US Presidency is a further step in the same direction. A fascinating, inspirational, some time very deep reading. Highly recommended!

Concerned Retrospection

This is a unique collection of Dr. King's most penetrating insights. It tracks his moral progression and intellectual maturity from when he was mostly concerned about the injustices in the South, to larger and deeper concerns about racism and poverty in America more generally, and in the world at large. It is well known that towards the end of his life he had also embraced the peace movement and became a force for ending the Vietnam War. In this collection one will also see how his views on the war had begun to coalesce and gel with his other humanitarian concerns. Dr. King was no lightweight. He drank deep and kept his moral compass on alert at all times.

Reading Mrs Coretta Scott King's excellent introduction and summary of the major events in Dr. King's life, which itself encompasses the whole of the Civil Rights era, brought back uncertain memories and raised new questions about the goals and tactics of the Civil Rights movement of the past era, including the non-violent aspects of it. In my family only my Grandmother, Mrs. Lula Brown, and I participated in the sit-ins at the local Pine Bluff, Arkansas Woolworth's Lunch Counter. The non-violent movement was coordinated through St. James AME Methodist Church, which was about 8-10 blocks from downtown. Each day, the cowardly "good old boys" knowing that they could throw acid from the backs of their pickups with impunity never failed to show up from the countryside to do so.That is until, violating the non-violent protocol I had been so carefully taught, I snatched one of them off the bed of the truck and began to plummet him. He was terrified, as well he should have been. At great embarrassment, I was kicked out of the non-violent movement.

But the point of this story is that neither my Grandmother nor I ever ate at the Woolworth's lunch counter once it was "integrated." And that is the nature of my concerned retrospection: All the symbolism aside, why, when discrimination in jobs, education, etc. were so much more important, were we getting acid throw in our faces to eat at a place from which, none of us would elect to eat in any case? Even 50 years later, the utter narrowness of the goals we had set for ourselves in the sit-in movement still seems to betray a serious commitment (beyond symbolism) to what our collective community needs really were.This mismatch between means and ends has bothered me ever since being kicked out of the movement.

One can argue that sit-ins were the straw that broke the back of segregation. But was it? Arguably, the forces of resistance simply move the front lines back a few yards and turned their resistance in to a much more serious political movement.The "old Southern Dixicrats" are now called "conservative Republicans." In the mean time Dr. King has been assassinated and we are left singing his praises with no programs, no movement, put plenty of lunch counters to eat at.

I was perusing through my bookshelf today, and stumbled across a very old edition of this book, "The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr."
Well I'd always noticed it here and there - but today I actually read it.

It's fantastic. It's something else. He was a genius before his time - yet he managed to stand up, at the right time.

Each excerpt makes you think. Very deep and moving.

Powerful. I highly recommend this book.

His fundamental commitment to unconditional love and unarmed truth
This book is a small compilation of quotes from Dr. King's writings and speeches.It's never a bad idea to honor the civil rights leaders and martyrs by reading literature that would again remind us of their struggle.
Through his words we will be reminded of how far we have come:
"I can foresee the Negro vote becoming consistently the decisive vote in national elections." -chapter on Justice and Freedom
Through his words we will be reminded of how far we haven't come:
"...wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows." - chapter on Peace

In one sitting, you could read this book in its entirety.As benefactors of his sacrifice, we should spare a few moments of our time to reflect on Dr. King and his enduring legacy.

Small but effective collection of MLK's speeches
When looking for some words of tribute to use at a church function, I recalled the copy of the book sitting amongst others in my home library.No better orator could have been selected than the revered civil rights leader.My presentation went off without and hitch and for that, I thank Dr. King.

Even the church hates this book lol
This book is SOOOO good - that even the Lutherin Church hates this book!! Makes you think "just who is really running the Church?" Martin holds nothing back - he says what needs to be said - His words are like fire on the page - It was his LAST book, think about it... That in itself says A LOT as to the power of the Jews....

Ignorance in the evangelical camp
This book is evidence that would question the salvation of Martin Luther."How dare you question Luther's salvation" says the man or woman who believes Luther was a key player in the Reformation.

Hold on there!! I am not judging Luther's heart, I am judging Luther's fruit as all Christians are commanded to do.

This book reveals a hatred for the Jews that did not stem from the Scriptures. This hatred from Luther stemmed from the Roman Catholic Church and their long term ignorance that the Jews were the killers of the Messiah.

Numerous other men who were said to have left the Roman Church also shared Luther's convictions. This book teaches the opposite of 1 John.

Suppose I take every reference to the Jew and replace it with the word German? Why not make ALL Germans pay for what Hitler did right?Go on! Read the two paragraphs; replace anything Jewish and replace it to read, "set fire to all the German churches".

Are we not commanded to love our enemies? Are we not told that a Christian would be known to the world by his or her love? Are we not told that God will repay evil for evil and that all judgment is in His hands?Who then is Luther to write such a book and call himself a Christian?

Scripture commands love be shown to ALL mankind and is an evidence of conversion if you claim to be a Christian.

This is a book many are unaware of and also dismissed by the bulk of men and women in the Reformed, Presbyterian, Lutheran camps.

I believe every pastor should have a copy of this book so that we can learn how NOT to practice Christianity.

I would also encourage another book called "The Distortion" by the Fischer's which is here at Amazon.

If you want to reach the Jews when the Lord lifts the blinders from their eyes, it is a good idea to know how they feel and why so you can evangelize the right way.

An interesting Mixture of Historic Testemony
Very short book (my PDF copy only 76 pgs.)

Evidently, in compliance to God's commands (Ref. Mat. 16:1-12) Luther, in conjunction with the German intelligentsia, was well aware of the rabbinic subversion of the Roman Catholic Church and society as he, as-well-as his peers, was familiar with the racist Talmudic doctrines and consequential civil moral degradation and debouched behavior.

Until the process assumptions and movement was subverted, returning to the written tradition affected a temporary negation of the "progress" of the racist utopian deception paradigm. The problem that he didn't avoid, reflecting his false history reference points, was his referring to these post 550 A.D. anti-covenant, non-Hebrew, non-semite, mother-lineage based counterfeit Jews as "Jews" (Ref. Rev. 2:9; 3:9) as is now granted and taught in the Zionist-funded seminaries and pulpits throughout the world assuming that God IS a respecter of persons while He states that He is not (Ref. Deu. 1:17, 16:19; 2 Chr. 19:17; Pro. 24:23, 28:21; Act. 10:34; Rom. 2:10, 11; Eph. 6:9; Col. 3:25; 1 Pet. 1:17).

There NEVER was a "necessary" corollary between being a Hebrew (part of the historic tribal construct) and being a "Jew". Correctly understood, the relational name "Jew" was established as the "covenant" name for ANYONE (from any tribe, kindred, tongue and nation) relating to God within his established (and blood ratified on the cross) Abrahamic Covenant.

In failing to make the distinction, at least in an unintentional defacto sense, he helped foster the "racist" identity-theft and its progressive subversive and manipulative uses within the Judaic and non-judaic communities. His observations as factually correct citations of data (but unpopular in the Zionist-controlled West) tend to foster within the carnal consensus-think post Christendom cultures, the anti-judaic (spin-played as the "anti-semitism" nonsequator) spirit that is "necessary" to fuel the well-funded institutionalized evil that he sought to expose and nullify.

Without helpful distinction and negation qualifiers, people (as naive socially-engineered victims) process the info according to their imbibed popular false assumptions, many of which have been taught from the zino-subverted and zino-created pulpits within churcheanity on the one hand as-well-as within the Judaic social (presented to the ignorant masses' as "public" institutions) and religious institutions on the other.

The book at a minimum expresses Luther's frustration of the Judaic community in how they behave**in so far as they've been indoctrinated** both culturally and individually into their Talmudic-based ideology when consistently applied. (Ref. Pro. 23:7a) "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Ironically, the very false foundational mother-lineage genealogical assumption (usually taught from youth so as to remain unscrutinized) is sufficient to bind people to the very anti-semitic anti-Abrahamic racist mind-set that has always, through its deception, enslaved them.

As mentioned by one of the other reviewers, in agreement, I didn't think that the cover picture was helpful in fostering anything but anti-Judaic backlash and further division.

To the degree a person rejects the truth is the degree a person is complicit in perpetuating the lie.

I thought I was RE-Reading Mein Kampf
In the one breath this guy talks about the WONDER of belonging to Christ and Being a Christian.
In the Next breath he is damning the Jews (men, woman, children and little babies) and calling for their homes and books and synagogues to be burned.

When I was young and attending Sunday School and "Bible study", I kept hearing about the "love Thy Neighbour" and "Turn the other cheek" fairy stories.
But this "Holy Roller", this Christian UBERMENSCH, this GIANT of Christianityis obviously above that.

It was okay for the "Good Lord" to forgive "HIS BRETHREN" when he said "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". But our Protestant hero Martin, doesn't forgive no-one.

The whole book is a racial, anti-semitic rant from beginning to end.
This Holy Roller even says that the "Jews shouldn't be allowed to read the old testament" as they are too corrupt, vicious liars, userer's, crooks, filth.

Mein Kampf was obviously based on the gall that came out of Martin Luther's mouth.

A MUST READ!!!!
Martin Luther a man after truth.It is a must read. He sought truth and God showed him truth.God showed himself to Martin Luther and he wanted to share this experience with the world.

Excellent read and scholarship
Nichols uses sound scholarship to make an easily accessible book that is an easy read in providing some of Luther's basics.

4 stars, but we need balance
First of all, please see my rebuttal to the awful one star reveiw in close proximity to mine.

And on to my reveiw...
Though this is certainly not the best work on Luther, I would venture to say that it is the best popular introduction. The book is layed out nicely. It reads quickly. Covers all of Luther's major epochs and works in a compact fashion. Having read the book, the average high schooler will have a reasonable amount of knowledge about Luther and a desire to learn more. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have more than two chapters of biography at the front end. Nichol's is a good scholar and is doing a service to the church by writing history in a way that is easy for the layman to digest and enjoy. If you are mildly interested in understanding Luther, I would get this book, a good biography (Bainton or Kittelson), and Martin Luther's Basic Theological Writings edited by Lull. Nichol's also has great suggested reading sections and a good bibliography for further study.

Disinformation on Martin Luther
This is the worst book I have ever read on the topic of Martin Luther by a person claiming to be Reformed.

The book is littered with historical and theological mistakes from start to finish.

Nichols asserts that Luther himself wrote "Table Talk" in one part of the book.Nichols writes, "Luther, in one of his table talk entries..." page 162.Any novice of church history knows that Luther did not author "Table Talk."This is poor scholarship.

Another mistake is seen when Nichols asserts that the 5-Solas are Protestant presuppositions.This is the type of mistake we expect someone from a completely different religion to make, not one who is supposed to be Calvinistic.Nichols writes, "Perhaps more than any other person, Luther shaped the presuppositions that define Protestantism.Theologians use a series of Latin expressions to capture these concepts.Known as the "Reformation Solas," they include:sola Scriptura, Scripture Alone; sola fide, faith alone;sola gratia, grace alone;solus Christus, Christ alone;and soli Deo gloria, to the glory of God alone.These ideas all take root in Martin Luther's thinking" page 16.

Sola Scriptura is the Axiom of Christianity.It is the belief that the Bible alone is the word of God.It is the only "Sola" that is presupposed.The other 4 are either explicitly stated or logically deduced from the Bible alone.Nichols is therefore wrong.For Nichols to make the absurd claim that all of the "Solas" are presupposed by Protestants is to completely misrepresent Protestant theology.Furthermore, the "Solas" do not take their root in Martin Luther's thinking.Luther merely rediscovered these principles and published them openly.He did not come up with them.John Wycliffe and John Huss, for example, each asserted the Protestant principle of Scripture Alone.Both were persecuted for their profession, and Huss even died the martyr's death for it.
