Product Description
Based on years of original research, Never to Leave Us Alone is the first book-length treatment of the prayer life of the famed religious and civil rights leader. Drawing on personal prayers that King recited as a seminarian and graduate student, preacher, pastor, and then civil rights leader, award-winning historian Lewis Baldwin explains how King turned to both private prayer and meditation for his own spiritual fulfillment, and to public prayer as part of his sermonic discourse, as an aspect of his pastoral care, and as a way of moving, inspiring, and reaffirming people in the context of a crusade for equal rights, social justice, and peace.

In the end, Baldwin argues, King's prayer life and reflections offer important keys not only to King the man but also to our own cultivation of core human values. The book includes photographs. ... Read more

Product Description
Martin Luther's catechisms - the Small Catechism in 1528-29, and the Large Catechism in spring 1529 - responded in part to "the deplorable, wretched deprivation that I recently encountered while I was a visitor" to rural Saxon congregations. The former was for laity, the latter an elaboration largely for the education of clergy, with Luther excoriating "their pure laziness and concern for their bellies."

Reformation scholar Timothy Wengert has studied Luther's catechisms for the light they shed on the maturing Reformation faith but also for the fascinating lens they afford into the social world of Wittenberg in those years: children, clergy, education and publishing, marriage customs, devotion and prayer, and celebration of the Lord's Supper in this period, along with Luther's own hearty faith, are all illumined by these Western classics.

In this volume, which also includes the texts of the catechisms, Wengert follows the traditional catechism order to demonstrate the dynamic faith exhibited in the catechisms in their original context and ours. An ideal resource for college and seminary classes, as well as individual and group reading, this volume will be a valued vehicle for understanding Reformation faith for many years to come. ... Product Description
On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial looking out over thousands of troubled Americans who had gathered in the name of civil rights and uttered his now famous words, "I have a dream . . ." It was a speech that changed the course of history.

This anniversary edition honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s courageous dream and his immeasurable contribution by presenting his most memorable words in a concise and convenient edition. As Coretta Scott King says in her foreword, "This collection includes many of what I consider to be my husband's most important writings and orations." In addition to the famed keynote address of the 1963 march on Washington, the renowned civil rights leader's most influential words included here are the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," the essay "Pilgrimage to Nonviolence," and his last sermon, "I See the Promised Land," preached the day before he was assassinated.

Editor James M. Washington arranged the selections chronologically, providing headnotes for each selection that give a running history of the civil rights movement and related events. In his introduction, Washington assesses King's times and significance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A PROPHETIC "SOCIAL BIBLE"FOR THE WORLD
This book "I Have a Dream" is indeed a book every human on earth needs to read. My aim to read the book stemmed from the quest of understanding the 'American Dream' and the the victory of Obama as first black american president-elect. After reading the book I became convinced that even though what Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. prophesied about America has been "Partially fulfilled", there is lot to be done for the world to be seen as one made by God,of God and for all people created of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Speeches
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of America's greatest heroes and this is a collection of his wonderful writings and speeches. Often people stop at "I Have a Dream" but this shows the complete evolution of Dr. King. A wonderful read that has been part of my library for the past 10 years -- and I've read it three times and often use it for reference and store it next to the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMERICANS SHOULD REALIZE THIS 'DREAM' TO THE FULLEST!
Dr. Martin Luther King's collection of writings and speeches, "I Have A Dream", brings aspiration to light. The events that surrounded the life and death of this true hero reveals the shameful fact that no matter how great the United States of America is today, it is one country that was nurtured with inhumane machinery: slavery, racism, injustice, Mickey-Mouse freedom, and Mickey-Mouse democracy. I hate to think about it, but it is an honest fact, whichwe should all come to terms with. Nobody can rewrite history.
The 256 pages that is "I Have A Dream" was enough to highlight the wickedness and the violence that were deliberately sustained in America, for a full century, after a bloody Civil War ended her tenacity on slavery.
One question that will always beg for answer is: How on earth did U.S. Presidents who presided over the ruthless color-bar era qualified for those Nobel Peace Prizes that they received? Knowing what life was like in the U.S.A. just a couple of decades ago melts my heart. "I Have A Dream" is a big eye-opener!

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential King
"I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World," by Martin Luther King, Jr., is a fine collection of texts by this important figure. The book has been edited by James M. Washington. Coming in at less than 300 pages, this is a concise but meaty book.

Washington includes King's most important texts: the "Letter from Birmingham Jail"; the "I Have a Dream" speech; his Nobel Prize acceptance speech; "My Trip to the Land of Gandhi"; "A Time to Break Silence," his 1967 speech criticizing the United States war in Vietnam, and more. These writings and speeches cover King's great themes: nonviolent resistance, the African-American civil rights movement, etc.

Those seeking a more comprehensive collection of Kings' work should seek out "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr." also edited by James M. Washington. At more than 700 pages, this is a truly monumental collection, and includes much material not found in "I Have a Dream": the 1965 "Playboy" interview, transcripts of television interviews, and more. But for those who want a shorter text that cuts to the heart of King's life and work, "I Have a Dream" is perfect.

"I Have a Dream" reveals King to be a true Christian prophet, and a man with a global vision. As literature, these texts also show King to be the heir of such American thinkers as Henry David Thoreau and W.E.B. DuBois. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Dr. King's works
This collection of Dr. King's writings includes all the major speeches -- such as I Have A Dream and I See the Promised Land, as well as important writings such as Letter from A Birmingham Jail.It also has great essays on the lessons Dr. King learned from Ghandi and a wonderful introduction from Mrs. King. This is a great collection to get started learning about Dr. King -- from his own pen.I highly reccomend it. ... Read more

And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God has willed
His truth to triumph through us.

From "A Mighty Fortress is Our God"

Across the centuries, these words from the pen of Martin Luthertestify mightily of the courage and faith of their author.God'sgrace transformed him from a fearful monk in anguish about his soul'ssalvation into a giant of the Faith who shook Europe by declaringboldly once again the words of the apostle Paul: "The just shall liveby faith."

Luther's story was never better told than by Swiss historian JeanHenri Merle d'Aubigné.The liveliness of Merle's style, his extensiveand remarkable use of original quotations, and the rich biographicalcolor of his work make it enjoyable to read.More than that, Merle'sevangelical fervor, his commitment to biblical truth, and hisfundamental sympathy with the spirit of the Reformation strike aresponsive chord in the heart of the Christian. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is a gem.
It is a very good biography, not too technical , yet comprehensive & easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive captivation of the workings of providence
I was initially reserved in my approach to the book 'cos I thought it would be boring and would contain too much theology.
I was proven wrong. I could see the interplay of man and God in shaping our history and now fully understand that indeed "He works all things after the counsel of his own will". I was taken with the literary style that I could not put it down desiring to find out what would happen next to Luther. It is awesome to know that Omniscience wields Omnipotence to achieve the counsel of the Omnipresent God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, readable, interesting like all D'Aubigne's works
I have read this book under separate title, and D'Aubigne presents in it a wonderful picture of Luther the man, from the perspective of an author who knows Luther's Lord.Much more readable than Bainton's work, and with atouch of the older style of writing that has now been lost.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Refomer
This is a biography of the historic Martin Luther from 1493 to the early 1500s. The name Lutheran comes from its founder Martin Luther. After nailing the 95 Theses to the wall of a church, the former Catholic monk opened the doorway to religous freedom. He also challenged the Catholic notion of celebacy. This is the story of his life in a convent to the diet of Worms, his writing of literature up to his death on February 18 1546. Included is a timeline of the events of Martin Luther's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
I had seen a movie about Martin Luther when I was a young teenager. I really enjoyed the book. It's amazing how fast he excelled in his teaching. The book was a great blessing to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Introduction
I'm a little confused by the people who are complaining about this book being childish... It's for children, for heaven's sake. I shudder to visit the Dr. Seuss pages. It does a fine job of quickly going through the events of Luther's life in much the same way a Sunday School class relates the facts of a Bible story without necessarily teaching all its implications. Perfect place to start.
My confirmation students read this book, which is amazing, since most 7th and 8th graders I know don't tend to be big readers. They must find it a sufficient challenge to stay entertained but simple enough that they aren't getting frustrated with it. You can teach them the theology yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Juvenile version
This book is written on a 7th-grade level. It is accurate and would be acceptable for a middle-school-age reader but it is definitely not scholarly or authorotative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Simplistic
I particularly appreciated the analytic review by "Orthodox Lutheran Reader." Historically and psychologically, this particular biographical rendition of Luther is superficial and terribly incomplete. While I realize that a simple, straightforward work on Luther might assist the very young, I do not see how reasonable adults can rate this book with five stars unless their fund of historical and psychosocial information is deficient. ... Martin Luther's conception of the Nativity foundexpression in sermon, song, and art. This beautiful new gift editionof a classic collection combines all three.

In thirty compelling Christmas excerpts from his sermons, Luthervividly portrays the human realism of the Nativity: Mary's distress atgiving birth with no midwife or water; Joseph's misgivings; the WiseMen's perplexity; and Herod's cunning.

Throughout, Luther suggests the question: If we had lived in Bethlehemwhen Jesus was born, would we have believed that this newborn baby wasGod in human form? And he reminds us that keeping Christmas is ayear-around mission of caring for those in need.

Nine elegant illustrations by Luther's contemporaries—includingfour by noted engraver Albrecht Durer—capture timeless scenes fromthe Christmas story. And two of Luther's beautiful Christmas carolsare included on the final pages of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin Luther's Christmas Book Should Be Read All Year Round

I found this book most humbling.Luther writes so profoundly well for the Christian from every walk of life.He explains "The Christmas Story.", i.e., the Birth of Christ as a way for us to enter into the Immaculate Inception, Birth, Flight as a way for us to understand why God Himself choose the low of the low and the lowly conditions in which the Babe was born, etc. into great thoughts about why God choose to do it this way and how we should respond. One of your reviewer'swrites." What I have gotten out of Xmas ... mostly expensive, forgetable ..mass produced goods. How sad, he/she must have been asleep while reading this book. This person should read pgs. 58-60 over again and apply it to their life and Christmas and they would be so blessed in the ways we as Christians should live our lives daily.

I highly recommend this book to people of all Christian faith. It is a truly beautiful piece for the mind, for it is how we should all consider the Holy Scriptures and start to live them. Buy this book for your children, grandchildren and friends.Buy it for those who do not know Chirst, it is a powerful witness of God and what He did for us whom He loves so very much!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Selection of Luther's Sermons and Contemporary Art
`Martin Luther's Christmas Book', edited by Luther biographer, Roland H. Bainton, is a delightful assemblage of Luther's Christmas sermons, songs, and visual arts' collaborators' woodcuts, primarily from the great Medieval artist, Albrecht Durer.
When I purchased the book, I expected the sermons, was delighted by the artistry, and was really surprised by the music. It turns out that Luther wrote many more hymns than his famous `A Mighty Fortress', which is not too surprising, since his dedication to music in services was one of his greatest contributions to the Protestant church, if only through his influence on the world's greatest composer, Bach.
The selection of sermons is but a small sampling of Luther's enormous output, when you consider that he preached for about 30 years, often with three or four sermons a week. When you multiply the six weeks of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, this comes to over 200 sermons just for the Christmas season. Editor Bainton has selected for us the most interesting of all this material and joined it into seven (7) representative sermons for the Annunciation, the Visitation, Nativity, the Shepherds, Herod, the Wise Men, and Presentation.
These sermons should work well with modern thinking, primarily due to Luther's faithfulness to his most important doctrine, being true to the scriptures and only the scriptures. Bainton's introduction describes how Medieval traditions piled an enormous amount of speculation on top of the Christmas story. The scriptures, for example, don't even say there were only three wise men. This is inferred from the three gifts. And, the traditional three names don't appear in the Gospels either, so Luther never uses them. He even goes out of his way to point out that the scripture says nothing about the wise men being `kings' as the popular hymn would have it. Rather, they were simple `professors', probably of astrology, whose star was a conjunction of planets.
Luther even goes further than many modern preachers in pointing out from the pulpit that there are disagreements between the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.
This is a great resource for any Christmas worship, especially in those churches which honor Luther's name. To the reviewer who said this is Luther's worst book, I must point out that the book contains barely 1/20 of what Luther wrote on Christmas, and any problems are probably more due to the editor than the Reformer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have yourself a Martin Luther Christmas
This great theologian has written a wonderful, informative and soul-stirring book on the Christmas Season.

2-0 out of 5 stars Luther's Worst
This is easily Martin Luther's worst book, as he creates a warm and fuzzy atmosphere. To me, that is selling out. Realizing his mistake, he rebounded with his Easter book, a collection of sermons. That's where we get Xmas from is Martin Luther. If the only time they get somethiong new is on Xmas, including clothes, that's why the economy is so bad. Realistically, Xmas is a time to get someone in your family to buy you that thing you want but can't quite afford or is to find, or to encourage kids to be kids by playing with toys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditations on the Christmas Story
This short book contains Martin Luther's insights into the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The descriptions of the people of the story are concise yet complete. While the Christmas scriptures arefamiliar, Luther's commentary makes Mary, Joseph, Herod, the Wise Men andthe shepherds come to life.

Each section begins with an illustration, four by Albrecht Durer.

This gem of a book can serve as a meditationguide for the Advent season. It is a worthwhile addition to theChristian's bookshelf. ... Read more

The true story of Martin Luther and the Reformation. What would you do if you were hungry and needed your supper? Would you stand outside someone’s door and sing for it? At the boarding school in Eisenach, Martin and his friends had to sing for their supper. As well as working out ways to get some tasty food before bedtime Martin spent a lot of time thinking about how to get to heaven. Martin thought that he had to pray for hours on end, eat very little, work very hard and study a great many good books in order to have his sins forgiven. However, as he began to read God’s Word for himself he discovered that the answer was not in doing these things, but by putting his trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. ... Read more

Martin Luther started a reformation movement that revolutionized Europe in the sixteenth century. His far-reaching reforms of theological understanding and church practices radically modified both church and society in Europe and beyond. Written by experts but designed for the nonexpert, the Armchair Theologian series from Westminster John Knox Press provides accurate, concise, and witty overviews of some of the most profound Christian theologians in history. 4-0 out of 5 stars An easy review
This is a good easy to understand review of Martin's teachings. The author explain things in an easy to understand way. He does a good job driving to the core of things to explain the principles in a good way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Luther's theology
This is an excellent introduction to Luther's thought. It gives a brief introduction to his life in the begining, and then goes through his ideas systematically. The key ideas are presented such as law and gospel, justification, his view of scripture, and the Lord's Supper. Paulson also discusses Luther's view of free will, as defended in his excellent book, The Bondage of the Will. It is written in such a way that it is understandable to a layman, yet still profitable for the theologian. The drawings are humorous, yet some might seem offensive. I wish Paulson would have included a chapter devoted to Luther's view of baptism, because it is certainly central to his thought and to his view of justification. However, only so much can be accomplished in a short book. For an introduction to Luther, this is the best place to go. If you would like to read a more detailed book about Luther's thought, I would recommend The Theology of Martin Luther by Paul Althaus. And of course I would recommend reading Luther himself. Nothing compares to the real thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand exposition of the Gospel
If you need to hear God's unconditional yes, thenthis is the book for you.Paulson does an amazing job expositing Luther's main point in theology, Christ for sinners! This is one of my favorite books and outlines the radical truth of the Gospel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic overview of Luther's theology
Steven Paulson attempts to discuss the main themes of Luther's theology and career in this book that also seems to attempt to find the middle way for readers that may range from initiates to theology to the more knowledgeable. He assumes readers will know the basics of the historical period and of the general prinicples of Christian theology. He mainly writes about the areas where Luther differed from the Roman Catholics and from other reformers such as Zwingli, Muntzer and the Anabaptists.

The main theme throughout the book is Luther's focus on justification by faith alone and the dynamic relationship between Law and Gospel. This discussion points to Luther's theology of the cross, but the author does not pursue the theology of the cross very in depthly. He does cover Luther's teaching that Christ takes all of a person's sins and gives all of his own righteousness to people. He provides reasons why this teaching suffers such animosity from many religous during Luther's time and today.Paulson also discusses the effectiveness of the proclamation of Christ's forgiveness of sins to people.

Overall, I think Paulson shows the importance of Luther and Luther's main ideas.Paulson faces a challenge in this book of covering Luther's theology comprehensively without going to deep into any of the particulars. The result is a general overview that probably will leave some readers confused by its terms and technicalities while other readers are unsatisfied by its lack of depth.

I think this works as a good introduction to Luther and can either whet the appetite for more study or provide a satisfactory overview for the curious "armchair theologian."

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
This review is rather a first impression than a final sentence. I am a Luther fan and I like good books. Being a pastor I thought I might find some of Luther's strong prayers in a form that I could use in services. However, the book is not layed out that way. Some of the prayers are still nice, but very personal. However, it is not the right thing to just read as a personal devotional either. The prayers are sorted by topics, though. Another thing I did not like is that the print almost appears to be scanned images rather than set print. It appears unclear, like photocopies in the old days. It is not pleasant for the eye to read. Maybe I am a little too critical, but it just wasn't what I had hoped for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luther's Prayers
Over the course of the past 6 or 7 months I have been slowly working my way through the book "Luther's Prayers". The book is only 100 pages long, so I made it my practice to read through each of the prayers devotionally. I have to admit that this was something of a strange practice for me as one who has grown up in evangelical circles, I've never really thought about reading through prayers or making other people's prayer my own. I was always taught that prayer needs to be something between you and God, so therefore it must be spontaneous. After all, we don't want to be like the Pharisees who simply repeated the words to prayers without any meaning. While I still believe that prayer should be heartfelt, it seems that there is something to be said for taking the time to thoughtfully record prayers and to leave a record of them for others. I have been richly blessed by making many of Luther's prayers my own. Not in a meaningliess manner of repeating words but in feasting upon the depth of his theology in my prayer life.

"Luther's Prayers" is a record of many of the recorded prayers of Martin Luther. I wouldn't say that it's the best book of prayers that I've read, that would be the "Valley of Vision" but it is definitely a good collection that stirs the soul and provides a unique insight into the heart of the Pastor Martin Luther as well as the heart of the reformer. The book is chalked full of practical advice about how to pray. Luther instructs how to pray through the Lord's Prayer as well as through the 10 commandments, something I had never thought of. In addition to the practical advice, the book gives insight into the prayer life of Martin Luther the reformer. At the diet of worms, where Luther was put on trial for his teachings, he was asked if would recant of his opposition to the Roman Catholic Church, in response he quietly asked for a night to think it over. The following is the prayer that he recorded before going back to the trial and declaring that he would not recant.

Almighty and eternal God, what a strange cause this is! How it loosens peoples' tongues! How small and insignificant is their trust in you! How weak and tender is the flesh, and how powerful and busy is the devil, with the help of his apostles and the worldly wise! How quickly the world withdraws help, does an about-face, pursues the easy way, and speeds on the broad road to hell where the godless belong. It sees only what is brilliant and powerful, great, mighty, and respected! If I should turn my eyes to it, I would be done for.

Oh God, Oh God, Oh my God, Oh my God, stand by me against all the wisdom and reason of the world. Do it. You alone must do it. It is not really my concern; it is yours. Alone I have nothing to do with these great lords of the world. I want good and quiet days, undisturbed. But it is your cause; it is righteous and eternal. Stand by me. Oh true and eternal God. I do not rely on human counsel, for it would be in vain. All that is carnal and tastes carnal falters.

O God, O God, do you not heart me, my God? Are you dead? No, you cannot die; you are only hiding. Have you called me to this place? I ask you so that I may be sure. God, grant it! Never in my life had I thought to oppose such great rulers and never had I set out to do it.

O God, stand by me in the name of your dear Son Jesus Christ who shall be my Protector and Defender, even my mighty Fortress, through the power and help of your Holy Spirit.
Lord, where are you? Come, come, I am ready like a patient lamb to lay down my life for this cause. It is your cause and it is righteous. I will not separate myself from your forever. Be it resolved in your name that the world cannot force me to act against my conscience, even if I had still more devils, and if my body which is first of all your creation should have to perish. So your Word and Spirit come to my rescue even if only for the body. And my soul is yours. It belongs to you, and may it remain with you forever. Amen. So help me. Amen.

In this prayer and in the rest of the book, we see the heart of a man struggling to "contend for the faith" and to "shepherd the flock of God." May God send forth an army of Luthers to bring about a new reformation in our day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayers for Your Life
These thoughtful and sometimes painfully honest prayers will be a great add to anyone's daily prayer life.
"Dear God , if only we were as diligent to pray, at least with a longing in the heart, as you are in coaxing, bidding, commanding, assuring, and constraining us to pray. Unfortunately, we are too lazy and ungrateful!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin Luther is Awesome
This book is a collection of simple but powerful prayers for all occasion. Prayer is a simple means for God to aid the pleas of those in need. Prayer has been practiced now for some 2,000 years. This is probably the best book of prayers you will find on the market coming from such a famous, important figure like Martin Luther. Luther was a Catholic Monk, who discovering atrocities in the Catholic church, rifted from it and founded protestant in the 1500s, and also the Lutheran demonination of Christianity, still the most popular branch of the Christian religion.

Product Description
Over the course of two years, Jonathan Tilove and freelance photographer Michael Falco traveled along some of the 650 Martin Luther King Jr. streets, avenues, and boulevards across the country--in Harlem; Belle Glade, Florida; Atlanta; Selma, Alabama; Jackson and Canton, Mississippi; Chicago; Oakland, California; Portland, Oregon; and nearly a score of cities and towns throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

As this journey reveals, life along King is at once tightly conjoined and kaleidoscopically diverse. And that is precisely what Tilove has lyrically portrayed in the writing of this book, and what Falco has so superbly illumined with his rich photographs of the people along Martin Luther King.

We meet Annie Williams, who livesand works on Belle Glade’s Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, managing the Sudsy City Laundromat, and who likes the idea that every black community she visits now has a main street with a common name; and Marion Tumbleweed Beach, a seventy-three-year-old teacher, writer, poet, reporter, editor, and activist who lives on Martin Luther King Street in Selma, Alabama, but finds the phenomenon a source of dismay: “I say they still get us with trinkets. We go cheap. I resent it.”

Tilove writes of the King streets: “Map them and you map a nation within a nation, a place where white America seldom goes and black America can be itself. It is a parallel universe with a different center of gravity and distinctive sensibilities, kinship at two or three degrees of separation, not six. There is no other street like it.” ... Read more

Luther-s Works: The American Edition, published by Concordia and Fortress Press between 1955 and 1986, comprises fifty-five volumes. These are a selection representing only about a third of Luther-s works in the Latin and German of the standard Weimar Edition, not including the German Bible. When Luther was prevailed upon to write a preface to the projected complete edition of his Latin writings in 1545, about a year before his death, he took the opportunity to review the high points of his career-to show that he really never had the time and talent to produce literature worth preserving, that in publishing these works he was now merely yielding to his friends' argument that his works would be published in any case, if not with his cooperation, then possibly by men who had no real understanding of them. That was one thing. But in that preface Luther also implored the reader of his Latin writings "for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ Himself to read those things judiciously, yes, with great commiseration". With Luther's lectures on the Epistle to the Romans he had a splendid opportunity to share with his students the great find of his life, "that place in Paul which was for me truly the gate of Paradise." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars First Time Reading 95 Theses
In this booklet, the second of Stephen Nichols' trio of booklets highlighting major Reformed figures (the other two booklets feature Jonathan Edwards and J. Gresham Machen respectively), Nichols' stated aim is to bring Luther's Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences - better known as the Ninety-Five Theses - to contemporary Christians who have heard of the theses, but never read them. This edition of the theses includes two helpful features: an introduction which sets the theses in historical context, and a minimal commentary on every facing page, while the main text appears on the right hand page. Not every thesis warrants a commentary, so Nichols has sensitively selected which theses bear specialized notes. Even then, the notes provide context or expansion only when necessary, and often in Luther's own words derived from his later work explaining the Ninety-Five Theses (suitably entitled The Explanations of the Ninety-Five Theses).

A few preconceptions of mine were dispelled by this booklet. Firstly, that Luther's main goal in 1517, as demonstrated by the document's official title, was `merely' to expose Johann Tetzel's abuse of papal indulgences (in effect a get-out-of-purgatory-free card) by generating a debate among churchmen. Secondly, Luther's reformational theology was far from being definitively worked out at this point; he was still very much a sympathetic Catholic intent on reforming the Church, not destroying it. Tellingly, the Ninety-Fifth Thesis itself portrays salvation by suffering rather than by faith. This emphasis would change in the years to come.

But the two preconceptions which were most jarringly dashed were a) Luther's consistent defense of the pope throughout the document, and b) the content of the sequence of theses derived from the questions of shrewd parishioners. Unless Luther was representing his own questions as those of his parishioners for rhetorical effect - which would have been dishonest - I would not have thought that the average working class 16th century German was thinking reformational thoughts. No wonder this spark on the tinder lit up the spiritual and ecclesiological landscape of Europe for generations to come.

Embedded in the midst of the theses is the one I consider Luther's gem, the Sixty-Second. It contains the reason why Luther was compelled to act on that October day in 1517, and why he persevered to bring true biblical teaching to the gospel-hungry masses throughout the rest of his life: "The true treasure of the church is the most holy gospel of the glory and grace of God." Luther staked his life on this gospel, which is why we remember him and commemorate him today - and more importantly, the God he served.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin Luther's 95 Theses
I studied the 95 Theses over 50 years ago. Over the last 8 years, I have been with a teaching team in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, and the Reformation of the 16t Century is a major if not the major focus of the seminary course.
If one wants to "hear" the authentic Luther, inevitably one must read and think and discuss the Theses. There are other treatises of Luther but of seminal value, I give the 95 Theses a prime spot.

Luther-s Works: The American Edition, published by Concordia and Fortress Press between 1955 and 1986, comprises fifty-five volumes. These are a selection representing only about a third of Luther-s works in the Latin and German of the standard Weimar Edition, not including the German Bible. Just as St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians has been called the Magna Carta of Christian freedom, so the Lectures on Galatians delivered by Martin Luther in 1531 and published for the first time in 1535 have been hailed as the great Reformer's Magna Carta of Christian liberty. In Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners John Bunyan (1628-88), who was languishing in jail, told how a long time before this "the God, in whose hands are all days and ways, did cast into my hand, one day, a book of Martin Luther; it was his comment on the Galatians-this, methinks, I must let fall before all men, I do prefer this book of Martin Luther upon the Galatians, excepting the Holy Bible, before all books that ever I have seen, as most fit for a wounded conscience." Luther treasured St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. Luther's Lectures on the Galatians, like Paul's letters, contain many distinctively autobiographical statements. In more than one respect these two men of God were kindred spirits. Both inveighed sharply and vigorously against their adversaries, but they also never lost sight of the Christian love that permeates the words of those who bring God's message of salvation to their fellow men. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Content great, condition less so
The heart of Christian doctrine, justification by grace, is expounded in Galatians and Luther is at his best. The book has much underlining and many comments in the margins which was disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christian Classic Speaks Grace to Moderns
You will find few clearer presentations of Luther's "salvation by grace through faith" than this commentary on the Apostle Paul's epistle to the churches in Galatia. This, in my opinion, is one of the greatest things written by Martin Luther -- scholar, pastor and reformer of the faith.First given as Lectures in 1535, Luther's exploration of Galatians rings as true and powerful today, 470 years later.Faith (trust in God's promise) is for Paul and Luther, the way in which we receive God's righteousness ("passive righteousness" which is a gift, according to Luther, as opposed to "active righteousness" which we strive to achieve, but never accomplish. pg. 4).

The struggle to trust in God's promise alone is as fresh today as it was in Luther's day, or even Paul's day, for that matter. In our rational, scientific, and material age, trusting in the "free lunch" of the gospel seems suspect. To rational people, it seems too easy. But for Luther, this was precisely the point, "By my reason I cannot understand or declare for certain that I am accepted into grace for the sake of Christ, but I hear this announced through the Gospel and take hold of it by faith." (pg. 239)

Luther does not always read well in our modern era.He is a bit verbose and can ramble a bit (although in these lectures I feel he is much more to the point than in other of his writings).Be that as it may, it is well worth the read. You will find gems on these pages that are worth the little digging it takes to find them. This is a Christian classic, which I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars By Faith Alone (Sola Fide)
This is, in my estimation, the greatest non-canonical book ever written.

Luther expounds Paul's epistle to the Galatians with an insight, power and depth of emotion which is sorely lacking in modern commentaries. He is not concerned with the various potential interpretations of "problematic passages" that fill the pages of other commentaries. From the very first page Luther cuts to the heart of the epistle-the doctrine of justification-in the way that only he can. His bold words and plain-sense interpretations result in a work filled with much of the same force and passion that characterized the epistle itself. The grace of God and the love of Jesus Christ cling to every word like the scent of a precious perfume. I cannot recommend this work highly enough.

This is the very essence of the gospel as understood by the one who "rediscovered" the doctrines of faith and grace as he teaches us from the words of the one to whom God first revealed those doctrines. If you are looking for an up-to-date critical commentary or a greek-focused exegetical work then you will not find it here, but if you would hear a plain declaration of the power and wisdom of God then you will not find a better treatise apart from the Bible.

This volume contains Luther's full commentary on the first four chapters of the epistle (most single-volume works are abridged).Chapters five and six, unfortunately, are found in a seperate volume and the bulk of that volume is taken up with an earlier commentary on the same epistle which, honestly, is barely worth the paper it's printed on.At best it can show you how radically different the twice-born, Spirit-led exegete is from the once-born, reason-led scholar. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mighty KING, forever!
This is a wonderful CD featuring King's speeches. Yes, I do wish there are more however, you can still feel King's fire and strength inside these speeches!!!!!!!. Although I was only 3 at the time of the Mountaintop speech, I felt like I had lost my father all over again. This had moved me to tears and now I really know whatmy dad and others like him was fighting for!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation!!!
This package is well worth the price. If you love to hear great speeches from great people like Dr. King, then this is definitely a must have. There's no point in talking about the speeches because I dont want to spoil them. The JFK speeches are exceptionally good as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better King Speech Collections
This is an excellent collection of King Speeches. It begins with the 1963 Detroit Speech, where "I Have a Dream" was first heard. This is filled with raw, barbed humor that most people don't presently associate with Dr. King. Next is the March on Washington Speech, which has the better knonw version of "I Have a Dream". Much of that is quite stiff before he gets to the Dream segement. Then we have the "Mountaintop" speech of 1968, which is all the more remarkable when you consider this was done without any notes. It conclues rather fittingly with Bobby Kennedy's eulogy of Dr. King, which is made all the more poignant since Bobby Kennedy was also killed just a few weeks later. Overall great listening and great history.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Wish There Were More Speeches
The title is somewhat misleading, as only three of the speeches featureKing, while the last is a speech by Robert Kennedy following King'sassassination. There are only four speeches total in this volume, so onehopes there will be more to come. At least the celebrated "I Have aDream" speech of 1963 is featured in its entirety. The speech stillgives me the chills after all these years and remains the standard by whichall speeches should be judged. It is the greatest speech of the 20thcentury, and for anybody to include it complete deserves at least threestars for including it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Galations Commentary I've Read
I wasn't sure how relevant this book would be when I first picked it up.However I was pleasantly surprised that this book definitely has stood the test of time for being a great commentary on the NT Epistle of Galations. Martin Luther has done a wonderful job explaining the book of Galations and really hammers home the importance of justification by faith alone. This book was so passionately written and encouraging to read, it gave me a fresh appreciation for all that God has accomplished for the believer. If you read one book or Bible study about Galations,I recommend you make it this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful commentary, a true classic
As other reviewers have noted, Luther's commentary on the book of Galatians is not your average commentary. It is truly a classic that is worth the time and effort of any believer who is looking to gain a deeper understanding of this important book of the New Testament.

The central theme of Galatians is justification by faith, and Luther goes to great length explaining what it means, and why it is so central to the Body of Christ. Like other reviewers, I was struck by Luther's passion and precision of argument as he expounds on the text. I think this commentary has really opened my eyes in a new way to what Christ has done for all of us. It challenged me to think about a lot of aspects of my faith in a new light, and appreciate the fact that Christ is my redeemer, and has provided the thing I need most since I cannot accomplish it on my own.

I highly recommend this commentary to any Christian looking for a better understanding of Galatians. It may also be useful to read if you are struggling with your faith, and have doubts about whether or not the cross of Christ has found true meaning in your life. Luther's words will inspire you and educate you in the process. You will not be disappointed. Sola Fide.

5-0 out of 5 stars His Passion is Contagious; My Favorite Galatians Commentary
Not too long ago I wrapped up a year-long study of Galatians. In the process, the Spirit used the book to bring the definition and perils of legalism to bear on my life. Just as in Galatians 3:1, seeing Christ clearly portrayed as crucified for my sins, how could I foolishly even presume to think that there was something that I could add to this salvation?! God used the book to literally change my life: making me fall deeper in love with Christ, shoving me to my knees at the foot of the cross, and revealing and removing many of my personal legalistic hopes of justification other than Christ.

That is what I love about Luther's commentary. Luther was learning this stuff and loving it as he was teaching it. He was not a theologian who had the benefit of walking in the steps of bible-loving, grace-espousing mentors. He was pierced by the word and the Spirit changed his heart by it. This is what you see in Galatians. During my study I read many great commentaries, but my favorite was Luthers. Luther acts in this commentary as both an exegete and a pastor. This is a commentary that you may just want to curl up with on the couch after you finish studying a section and read and read again. His passion is contagious.

(By the way, my other favorite Galatians commentaries were MacArthur's and Hendriksen's. Calvin's and Stott's came in a close #4 and #5). I hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Justification by Faith in all its Brilliance
Martin Luther (1483-1546 AD) became an Augustinian, Roman Catholic monkwhere he studied the Word of God diligently while still in the monastery. His study convinced him to post his 95 theses, statements he wanted todebate within the context of the Church to restore it. The rest is historyas Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic church andbecame the first "Lutheran."Luther was convinced that: God justifies aperson (declares him righteous and acquits him) by faith alone and not byworks, each believer has access to God directly apart from any humanintermediaries, and the Scriptures are the true source of authority forboth faith and life. Many of his doctrines, especially on justification, hecovered brilliantly in his commentary on Galatians. And rightly so, forGalatians was his favorite book, his "Katherine," and it was centralto his understanding of the gospel.

Luther's Commentary on Galatians inthe history of the Christian Church is very remarkable. It presents like noother of the central thought of Christianity: the justification of thesinner for the sake of Christ's merits alone. Luther also delineates thedifference between Law (what God demands from us) and Gospel (what God hasdone and does for us); in this text, we understand his "simul justus etpeccator," that is, a Christian is simultaneously 100 % saint and 100 %sinner.

To understand Christian theology and justification by faith, reading this commentary is proper, right, for our eternal good--for Lutherexplains the doctrines of the Scriptures in forthright boldness andclarity. ... Read more

This is an English translation of Luther's Summaries of the Psalms, 1531 which was originally done in 1993. This latest edition includes the ESV translation of the Psalms, Luther's introductions to each of the 150 psalms and a suggested schedule for reading the Psalter. The introductions demonstrate how Luther understood the Psalter as a Christ-centered book and how he used the psalms as the model for Christian prayer. Luther classifies each psalm as a psalm of prophecy, instruction, comfort, prayer, or thanksgiving and applies the message of the text to the life lived out under the cross. Luther also connects the psalms to the Ten Commandments and the petitions of the Lord's Prayer. For Luther, all aspects of the Christian's life, including the Psalms, relate to Christ and His Gospel of forgiveness, life, and salvation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome resource
As a disclaimer, I am an LCMS Lutheran.

I really appreciated this wonderful resource, moreso than I thought I would. It's a bit thicker than I would have hoped, but still fairly easy to take with you in travels. I love the introductory text to each Psalm written by Luther, as well as there is at minimum 1 prayer attached to each Psalm.

There is also included in the back a schedule for singing all 150 Psalms over a 2 week period (and instructions on how to sing the Psalms are in the front, and each Psalm is marked for singing), as well as a schedule for morning/evening reading.

All in all, I really love this book. Even if you are not Lutheran, this book would be a great resource for you to have. Nearly the entirety of Scripture can be summed up from the Psalms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad I own it.
We use this as a family devotion everyday.Love it.I just wish the Bible version was NKJV, instead of the ESV.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I'm so glad I purchased this book. It is an in depth look at each of the psalms according to Luther.

4-0 out of 5 stars Develop a Better Appreciation of the Psalms
Most of us may briefly encounter the Psalms during worship services, but the Psalm of the day seldom is used as a basis for a homily/sermon.Luther's presentation of the Psalms attempts to put them into a framework based on the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer. He also tries to show how they lead to Christ.

I'm no theologian, and thus can't judge how effective Luther's treatment of the Psalms is, however I am enjoying the opportunity to read the Psalms at a more measured pace, and giving them more thought.I bought this book because I am a Lutheran, but I think other Christians would find this book worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lutheran Psalter
Although I am not a member of a Lutheran denomination or synod, I have relatives, friends, and neighbors who are Lutherans.Thats pretty hard to avoid, living in South-Central Minnesota.

This book has a handsome cover and each psalm has introductory comments and a prayer afterwards, provided by none other than Doctor Martin Luther. This book is excellent for personal use, and would make a nice gift, also.

I would really like to see Concordia Publishing issue a leather bound edition of the excellent Lutheran Book of Prayer combined with this Psalter. For those who use both books in their devotions, such a book would make for more convenience. However, until such an edition ever is published (if it is ever published), one can't go wrong owning both of these books.

Besides this Psalter and the Lutheran Prayer Book, Concordia Publishing House also sells a very handsome edition of the Book of Concord, which every conservative Lutheran home should own (whether a member of the LCMS, WELS, ELS, CLC, LCR, or even the Laestadian and Apostolic Lutheran churches).Add the ESV translation of the Bible and these 4 books would make an excellent home library for the Lutheran Family.

I own these four books and I'm not even a Lutheran! (smile)
