5-0 out of 5 stars A History of L&H In Pictures!
In his third book about Laurel & Hardy.Dr.John McCabe and his co authors:Al Kilgore and Richard W.Bann take another look at the team's film work and they do so..in an unconventional way.Thru the use of photos from their films and with an interesting text.Dr.McCabe and his fellow film historians/writers show us all The evolution of Stan & Ollie's work and why their films are still popular with moviegoers and tv/home video viewers. The Book also gives some more biographical background into the boys'lives than what has been written in other manuscripts and there is some insight into the difficult period in the boys'careers. When they appeared in their forgetable films for Fox and MGM during the 40's and their final series of successful performances in English music halls and cabrets in Europe during the post war years. There is even a chapter titled"For Stan & Ollie"a dedication to the team by some famous performers and personalities:Leslie Haillwell,Orson Bean,Patsy Kelly(Who worked with the boys in "Pick A Star"),Marvin Hatley(The resident music director at The Hal Roach Studios),Hans Conried,Eddie Cantor,Lou Costello and even Lenny Bruce and Groucho Marx lend their thoughts about the team. This plus The unique film raitings device(Derbies instead of stars..to let the readers know.Which L&H film is good and which ones are not up to par)makes this a book worth having! Bravo Jack,Al And Dick! Kevin S.Butler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I must admit, Oliver Hardy was always my favorite of the two, and I was so pleased to find this biography of him. If you can manage to track it down, it's well worth it. Very well researched, with lots of new information and photos. Very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid bio on the most elusive of Laurel & Hardy
Oliver "Babe" Hardy is something of a paradox: many comedians feel he is actually the funnier of the classic team of Laurel & Hardy. Yet, there is so little biographical material available on him. True, if you buy a book on the comedy team you'll find out the bare facts. But there's always a wealth on Stan Laurel...not Babe (as his friends called him). Why?

A key reason, as John McCabe's solid bio points out, is that Babe wanted it that way. He deferred all creative decisions and most press inquries to Stan. In a sense, McCabe faced a Herculean task: he wanted to write a bio about a comedian etched firmly in world film culture, yetactual sources of information (Hardy died August 6, 1957) were few. Could it be done?

Yes. Babe etches out Hardy's life. And we learn a few fascinating tidbits along the way: how throughout his life he always cringed at jokes about his weight (his weight always bothered him) but went along for the laughs (Jackie Gleason reportedly had the same attitude); how he developed his fuss-budget film-personna quirks from a relative; how he viewed himself more as an actor (or reactor) than a comedian; how his love for music pervadedhis life (he does sing in some of his films). And a LOT more. The book also gives fascinating details about his sad final year where he lost a lot of weight and his health went into a downward tailspin.

This is a solid book that also recounts some of the team's best shorts, features, and details their famous tour of England. And McCabe JUST pulls off his feat. His source material on Hardy is largely culled from interviews with Stan Laurel and Hardy's last wife, Lucille. If there is a complaint it's that this is still not as well fleshed out as a typical show biz bio where more sources and information were available -- but there is enough detail to make this a solid book that'll delight Laurel & Hardy fans, show biz bio fans, and students of comedy of all ages. Babe would be pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Babe: The life of Oliver Hardy
This book is written with a lot of warmth attached to it that allows you, the reader, to appreciate just how Oliver Hardy worked and lived. It goes into detail of minor storiesof poeple who met him. I knew very littl of Oliver before i read this book. I now know a lot more and I feel that I almost knew him personally. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first biography of Joseph McCabe (1867-1955), a former Catholic priest who became one of the best-known champions and a prolific populariser of free-thought and rationalism in the first half of the 20th century. McCabe's encyclopaedic curiosity, rigorous scholarship, and above all his unswerving intellectual honesty led him through a tumultuous career of public lecturing and debating, and an incredible output of over 200 books. He tackled the most controversial issues of the modern era: evolution, biblical errancy, belief in God, immorality, spiritualism, capitalism vs. socialism, women's rights, and many other topics. Much of his writing was published in the form of the "Little Blue Books" by E Haldeman-Julius, who declared McCabe to be 'the world's greatest scholar'. Today in our post-modern period, where Enlightenment values are being questioned and irrationalism in many guises has become fashionable, McCabe's gift for rational inquiry, respect for scientific evidence, and lucid, no-nonsense prose are both relevant and welcome. ... Product Description
Over thirty years ago, a group of six Englishmen - well, one was Welsh and another an interloping American - rewrote the rules of comedy.Monty Python's Flying Circus, an unheralded, previously unseen half-hour show of sketches, hilarities, inanities and animations, first appeared on the BBC late one night in 1969. Its impact has been felt the world over ever since. From its humble beginnings, it blossomed into the most influential movement in modern comedy. THE PYTHONS' AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE PYTHONS is a unique look at arguably the most important comic team of the modern age, with 64 pages of photographs, many culled from the team's own personal collections, and many more seen for the first time. This is the definitive word on all things Pythonesque. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars And now for something completely not funny, yet indispensible.
...but that's not a bad thing (explanation below).

I got this book for Christmas and was concerned that because of it's size I would probably end up just thumbing through and reading select parts. Not the case.I started reading it and couldn't stop.

It covers the group and individuals from their pre-Python lives through discussions of working together again after The Live at Aspen event - though I won't tell you what conclusion they came to.In between is chock full of every detail about their influences, TV show, the movies, the stage shows and more. And because each member contributes (hence...autobiography) you get a great insider's perspective on the dynamics of the group. You learn first hand who doesn't like who, what they enjoyed and how, at times, they really struggled, and a bunch more behind the scenes insights into their personalities.

I found the book to be fascinating. It is formatted such that each event is discussed by multiple members of the troop. So you get a 360 degree view of their writing sessions, their fights, their good times, their movie productions, their business and artistic relationships.

The only downside (and here is why I titled this as such) is that it was rarely funny. That is by no means a fault, but could come as a surprise (as it did me) to the reader who expects it to be silly and funny like their performances. As a result this book is probably only going to be of interest to a true Python fan.And a true Python fan will find it indispensible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
The Pythons were like the British Marx Brothers, Anti-authority,
subversive, surreal, and very very funny.Particularly interesting are the Python's accounts of their childhood and pre-fame days.

It seems "A Careful Reader" wasn't so careful after all.The picture of Dudley Moore (and it is most assuredly him) is on page 68 NOT 88.Here's a clue for ACR...he's about 30 years younger than he was when he appeared in the movie "10."Thank you and good night!

3-0 out of 5 stars A few points about this Monty Python book
On page 88 it says that one of the four men in the photo is Dudley Moore. The fellow in the picture doesn't look at all like Dudley Moore. Furthermore, it says, on another page, that Ian MacNaughton is beseeching Terry Jones. But the man MacNaughton is begging seems to actually be Michael Palin. On a different note, in his autobiography part of the book Eric Idle seems too proud of his anti-authority stances. The 60's are very long gone now. Idle should grow up and not be so flaunting of his anti-societial ways. Being part of society is back in fashion. ... Read more

Product Description

Cagney came from a poor Irish-American New York family but once he found his metier as an actor, it was not long before he was recognized as a brilliantly energetic and powerful phenomenon. After the tremendous impact of Public Enemy - in which he notoriously pushed half a grapefruit into Mae Clarke's face - he was typecast as a gangster because of the terrifying violence that seemed to be pent up within him. Years of pitched battle with Warner Brothers finally liberated him from those roles, and he went on to star in such triumphs as the musicals Yankee Doodle Dandy (winning the 1942 Oscar for best actor) and Love Me or Leave Me. Even so, one of his greatest later roles involved a return to crime - as the psychopathic killer in the terrifying White Heat. He retired from films in 1961 after making Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three, only to return twenty years later for Ragtime. But however much Cagney personified violence and explosive energy on the screen, in life he was a quiet, introspective, and deeply private man, a poet, painter, and environmentalist, whose marriage to his early vaudeville partner was famously loyal and happy. His story is one of the few Hollywood biographies that reflect a fulfilled life as well as a spectacular career.
Amazon.com Review
If you're looking for an impersonal, gossipy,take-no-prisoners account of James Cagney's life, this is not the bookfor you. Author John McCabe is in love with his subject. Afterghost-writing Cagney's autobiography in the 1970s, the two remainedclose until Cagney's death in 1986. But his bias toward the actor, whom McCabe describes as "a great artist and an even greaterman," has opened many doors. In particular, it has allowed McCabeto collect an immense repository of quotations and testimonials fromCagney's friends and from the actor himself. Dipping frequently intohis archive, McCabe has fashioned a book that makes for a thrilling, revelatory read. Many readers find the section devoted to the actor'simpoverished childhood the most riveting, but I was just as captivatedby the account of his professional career. McCabe recounts Cagney'smany successes at Warner Brothers studios, his Oscar for YankeeDoodle Dandy in 1943, his tussle with the belovedS.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall during the shooting of that film, hiscommand of the Yiddish language (picked up on the streets of New Yorkand a great help to him when negotiating with Jack Warner), his escape(just barely) from the seductions of gorgeous actress Merle Oberon, his decision to retire while still at the peak of his power, and manyother wonderful stories and anecdotes. I love the section, late in thebook, where the author and Cagney meet, and biography suddenly becomesautobiography. --Raphael Shargel ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cagney
Excellent BIO learned things about Cagney that I didn't know and found the book very interesting and insightful into the man. A very enjoyable read would recommend to anyone wanting to understand the Great Actor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cagney is still my favorite actor
I loved the biography of James Cagney.I especially loved the chapter dedicated to "Yankee Doodle Dandy", which has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child.

1-0 out of 5 stars INVASION OF MR CAGNEYS PRIVACY
I think that Mr. McCabe betrayed Mr. Cagneys trust by submitting personal and private matters that Mr. Cagney worked so hard to conceal.I respect James Cagney b/c he was a wonderful actor and I'm always entertained by his movies.I stopped reading this book b/c it was so personal. This book is perfect for all the psycho tabloid readers who are too wrapped up in other peoples lives than their own.If there is any respectable people left in this world...there are few...I would recommend the book that Cagney wrote himself, Cagney by Cagney.I am ashamed that I bought this.

5-0 out of 5 stars a faraway fella...
this autobiography by the ghostwriter of Cagney by Cagny is a fine, loving and detailed portrait of an artist with humility, integrity and boundless talent. One of the finest autobiographies I've read. Cagney the man is so much more interesting then Cagney the actor and Cagney the actor was one hell of a talented soul. The writer makes us understand Jim Cagney so well and develop so much empathy for the man that it's like he's sitting across from you and telling his own life story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Yankee Doodle Dandy of a Bio!

Seen the Movies? Read this book!

A great bio of one of Filmdom's Gods.

Product Description
'The Comedy World of StanLaurel' is a vivid and intimate biography of one of the all-time masters of comedy. John McCabe follows Stan Laurel's career from his early days in British variety, his arrival in the United States, the first films, to his teaming up with Oliver Hardy in 1936 and their meteoric rise to fame. Arthur Stanley Jefferson (Stan Laurel) was born on June 16, 1890 in Ulverston in North Lancashire (presently Cumbria), England. Stan's first professional theatrical engagement was as a boy-comedian at the Britannia Theater in Glasgow. He would become a film legend, and one-half of the world-famous comedy team of Laurel & Hardy. Stan Laurel's film career spanned 35 years and 182 pictures. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Mr. Laurel Says...."
This book belongs on the same visible, accesible shelf as L & H - From The Forties Forward; Babe - Life of Olver Hardy (also by McCabe); The Magic Behind The Movies; and of course, The Life of Stan Laurel.
Even the casual fan will take delight and be fascinated by late career entries by Mr. Laurel, detailed here: full scripts for radio, for the stage, and believe it or not....for television! Yes, that first unproduced script for "Laurel and Hardy's Fabulous Fables", a 1956 TV Special series installment, is here. Along with scribbled notes - still inspired by a great comedy mind.
[There are amazing other writing examples by Stan on the site: Laurel and Hardy Central].

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all comedy fans!
The main thing that makes this book invaluable is the Stan Laurel-authored scripts to live Laurel & Hardy stage shows, and Laurel & Hardy radio performances. It also included an assortment of great gag ideas Laurel had for films that were never used.

This book also helps set the record straight that Stan Laurel was the real creative force behind his best movies, even though others always got writing and directing screen credit.

Historical interest aside, the Laurel & Hardy scripts are great reading for sheer entertainment value.

Even if you've seen every Laurel & Hardy film made, realize that the Laurel & Hardy characters had a handful of other adventures which were not filmed. This book is a priceless way to access these great scripts.

If you haven't seen many Laurel & Hardy films, rent some. I can recommend almost every Laurel & Hardy film made, with only a small handful of exceptions.

After you've seen enough Laurel & Hardy films to become a fan, read this book. You're sure to love it.

This is author/compiler John McCabe's _third_ book on the subject of Laurel and Hardy. His first book was a concise but excellent biography of Laurel and Hardy in the early 1960's, called "Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy." McCabe had met Laurel & Hardy in person when he first started that project, and he wrote that meeting L&H in person, and finding them to be such nice people in real life, was "like finding out Santa Claus actually existed."

McCabe also co-authored a 1975 pictorial filmography called "Laurel and Hardy."

If you haven't seen many Laurel & Hardy films, rent some. I can recommend almost every Laurel & Hardy film from before 1941. (Their post-1940 films were mediocre at best, mainly because Laurel had very little creative input to his films of that period.)
